BEFORE | AFTER Swipe to see the before video at the end. My client gave me some Pinterest inspo pics but ultimately wanted her first home to be cosy, comfortable and beautiful. The existing furniture items used: 〰️a round walnut dining table that belonged to her grandmother 〰️her existing Coricraft white couch 〰️a wooden dining room table and chairs we repurposed as an outdoor table and the chairs painted charcoal and used in the dining room. She wasn’t a fan of the existing flooring, but time and budget didn’t allow for a flooring renovation, so I had this huge custom seagrass rug made from @homestead_decor which has made a world of difference 💫 We moved and swapped out the existing wall lights, beautiful black metal and glass sconces, which also completely transforms the space. Vintage furniture is always a game changer: it not only stretches your budget, it adds charm and character - giving your home a collected versus showroom floor look and feel. Presented under the theme “Foreigners Everywhere”, the 60th edition of the Venice Biennale features work by more than 50 modern and contemporary African artists in chief curator Adriano Pedrosa’s main exhibition – among them eight modernist South African artists also appearing in the catalogue for Strauss & Co’s forthcoming live auction in Johannesburg on Tuesday 28 May 2024. “Adriano Pedrosa’s exhibition is a momentous occasion for modern African artists and an inflection point for change,” said Frank Kilbourn, Chairperson, Strauss & Co. Speaking at the fourth edition of the African Art in Venice Forum, an important platform for dialogue hosted in Venice and sponsored by Strauss & Co, Kilbourn pointed to the historical lack of visibility of modernist artists from Africa in major museums and exhibitions outside Africa. “Why are certain artists better known than others? Why are there so few African artists represented in major museums and exhibitions internationally? ✨Ingrid Altmann✨ Painter •This Old Painting• After 20 years of working in the PR industry Ingrid Altmann decided that it was time for a change and decided to branch into other avenues. She came across some interesting art work online and was drawn to it’s comical effect. She also loved that this type of art involved upcycling old works and started to frequent 2 nd hand stores in Cape Town. It was a bit like treasure hunting says Ingrid Altmann. Scrounging around 2 nd hand stores looking for suitable art works that would work with cartoon characters was quite a lot of fun Her first exhibition was held at Noordhoek Art Point. Umpteen Impossible Things Before Breakfast, the group exhibition currently on show at Gallery 2 on the ‘Art Strip’, 142 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood, features recent works by staff in the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Johannesburg (and some collaborators from other universities), in response to a quote from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland (1865) in which the Queen exclaims: ‘Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.’ In the book, Alice follows her curiosity, and finds herself in several unexpected situations. Her determination and willingness to follow the process without knowing the end point, is a characteristic that artist-scholars share with Alice. ‘The artworks on this exhibition highlight the belief in the impossible that attends the creative process, which is essentially about making the impossible tangible,’ reads the exhibition statement. ‘Working across a range of media and topics, the artworks foreground the absurd, the improbable, playfulness, making as thinking, and art as a means to respond to the world around us. The works therefore embody the spirit of curiosity and uncertainty of Alice in Wonderland, without directly referring to the text.’ The exhibition, which runs until 11 May 2024, features works by four artists who are represented in the SABC Art Collection.
