I know that I am probably going to enjoy or love most of the films in the Criterion Collection (the other challenge I am doing), but this challenge always brings me a lot of surprises. I know Kinji Fukusaku mostly as a director of crime movies (The Battles without Honor and Humanity series among others), so I was pleasantly surprised to see this sci-fi film in his filmography. This was a blast in a "what the hell did I just watch" way. This film blatantly rips off Star Wars and turns it into a Power Rangers story without the big robots. When it comes to Star Wars ripoffs, unlike some modern ones (*cough*Rebel Moon*cough*), this is an entertaining romp. Final Thoughts: Loved the use of miniatures and the explosions looked pretty cool. The story and the costumes are insane, but I had a lot of fun. 🌟🌟🌟 out of 5.

“Krieg der Galaxien” 9 Sci-Fi Filme auf 3 DVDs Die Filme auf dieser Compilation sind wirklich nichts besonderes und die paar Perlen, die darunter sind, habe ich in würdigeren Veröffentlichungen. Was mich an der Box eigentlich fasziniert, ist das wunderschöne Covermotiv. Eindeutig an “Star Wars” angelehnt, befindet sich zentral dargestellt ein leicht barbarisch angehauchtes Paar, die entfernt an eine Fantasy-Version von Luke und Leia erinnern und rund herum tobt eine Raumschiffschlacht von denen ein Schiff verdächtig nach einem modifizierten Millennium Falcon aussieht. Das Motiv würde ich mir glatt als Poster gerahmt an die Wand hängen. Kennt einer den Artist? 👉🏻 Nachtrag: Dank der hervorragenden Community hier, weiß ich jetzt, dass es sich um das italienische Plakatmotiv zu “Star Crash” handelt! Ajax variety space figures. The Other vintage spacemen, after the Archers. Orginal 1952 run in metallic green, metallic bronze and metallic purple only. Ajax did not hallmark their production and likely cast them in other colors to bulk vend and/or leased out the mold. My metallics & black/white are likely vintage 50s, the rest likely never to be known. Outright copies abound as well, my red pistol and green radio guys look odd. Ajax sold in 1970 and the molds were known to be in use by Joy Toy into the Kenner Star Wars toy era. Painted figures in bright happy colors were Hong Kong copies often packaged as cake decorations. Poses are more playful than the Archer's and they had a girl, but figures are top heavy and poorly balanced. „Star Crash - Sterne im Duell“ Werbeflyer aus dem Jahr 1978. Diesen Film habe seinerzeit noch im Kino gesehen. Erwartet habe ich einen mindestens „Star Wars“ ebenbürtigen Film, bekommen habe ich David Hasselhoff im Weltraum. Damals kannte ich David Hasselhoff natürlich noch nicht, mir war aber sofort klar, dass der Film „Star Wars“ nicht das Wasser reichen kann. Immerhin gab es Caroline Munro als Schauwert und viele poppige Weltraumschlachten in schillernden Discofarben und mit bunten Laserblitzen. Ich war schon ziemlich enttäuscht, doch über die Jahre hinweg habe ich mich mehr als nur versöhnt mit dem Film. Jetzt kann ich sogar behaupten, Fan zu sein. Der 70er-Jahre Charme dieses Films ist einfach faszinierend. Klar ist das Rip-off ohne Ende, aber so schön bunt und schräg, dass es eine wahre Freude ist! Und Caroline ist immer noch ein Hingucker. Some of the visuals might hold up but that does not mean that the characters and story ever held up or was even good to begin with, as it was a clear Star Wars rip off. I can’t believe fox put $100 million into this ugly beast of a movie. The action was all shaky and you can’t even see half the action and the acting was extremely beginner level. The gorgeous Caroline Munro is Stella Starr, ace space smuggler, tasked with helping the Emperor find stuff, and defeat the evil Count Zarth Arn. It's some serious Star Wars cheesball poaching, with unfortunate stop motion animation and David Hasselhoff. In other words, lots of laughs. We paired it with a tremendously drinkable DIPA, all fruity hoppiness and pillowy softness on the tongue. Join us. 🍻

A while back we were visiting Tortugo and inquired about sponsoring an episode, and lo and behold they said yes. We grabbed this beautiful beer because of the unlikely couple of Stella Starr and Elle the robot. What a tasty beer, all wave after wave of lush hops, with a mold, pleasing bitterness. The second slide, is that eerily similar to the iconic opening shot? Elle, the comic relief robot, seems familiar, but instead of the upper crust British accent he has an 'aw, shucks' American southern accent. And the villain's name? Zarth. Zarth Arn. What a hoot. She broke out in roles for the venerable horror studio Hammer, and turned down the role of Ursa in Superman for a role in The Spy Who Loved Me, so she had some sweet choices. Then, her big role, as Stella Starr, in Starcrash. She's a rogue and space smuggler with an alien co-pilot. If that sounds like Han Solo and Chewie, it's because this is a Star Wars ripoff. Her space bikini outfit does predate Princess Leia's, and there is a frozen planet, which predates Empire Strikes Back, so I guess the question really is: who ripped off who?

One of the highlights of producing Toy-Ventures magazine is crafting the giveaway premium for every issue. This month we settled on doing a faux movie poster for Star Team based on the Star Crash parody dreamt up by @davewaugh . Movie posters mean credits and it was a lot of fun to plant pop-culture easter eggs and pay some homage to some of our favourite people of all time. John Kent came up with Oliver Reed as Kent and I think Corey thought Vincent Price would voice ZEM-21. The SCTV references are me as is much of the other choices.
