Spike Lee Retrospective Number 13 - Da 5 Bloods (2020) The last movie released while Chadwick Boseman was alive (Ma Rainey was posthumous) is a Spike Lee joint that feels tinged with melancholy in retrospect. Four aging Vietnam veterans return to the Country where they fought to try and recover the gold they stashed there decades earlier but have only recently been able to locate. On the way they meet and confront their own past and present. The children they may have fathered, the demons they left in the jungle and the PTSD they have all suffered since. Delroy Lindo as Paul is the role of a lifetime here. An angry combination of sadness, regret and misplaced blame. The scenes of him talking to himself in the jungle really hit through. Clarke Peters is the heart of the Bloods as the soulful but badass Otis. The less said about Jonathan Majors these days the better; but he's really good as Lindo's son - rejected but also caring about his Dad's mental health. The direction is really good. The flashbacks with Chadwick as 'Stormin Norman' are well shot battles and I like the decision to have the older actors play their young selves without any CGI. There's something very satisfying about seeing these guys from The Wire in a war movie. As always with a Spike Lee joint, it's a bit too long and tries to tackle too much. The ending montage tries to cram in almost every part of African American concerns in 30 seconds. But it wouldn't be Spike Lee without that. It's in my top 5 so far and I enjoyed it as much as I did back when it came out in lockdown. The story of an unlikely friendship. Der Fuchs (The Fox/戰火下的小狐狸) is an Austria movie which is the true story of Franz Streitberger, the director’s great-grandfather, a motorcycle courier for the Austrian Army. The film is set way back in the past, during the years of World War II for the most part, this introverted young soldier comes across a wounded fox cub that he looks after and takes to occupied France with him - and through this unique friendship, his own past as an outcast farmers son slowly catches up with him. While most of the “story” happens during Franz’s time in the Wehrmacht during WW2, it’s not really a war story - it’s a story about poverty and speechlessness. Many children had to leave their homes because the small mountain farms were not able to sustain the families. There’s not much violence, and nobody is dying on screen, but the emotional impact is powerful and there’s no levity at all. The actor in this film was perfection. He was so hurt by his parents he trusted no one. And the foxes (of course, they had to train more than one for the scenes) were perfect, too. It’s kind of brilliant in it’s simplicity, though there is a lot going on between the lines here. I thought it would just be another action/prison escape film with the typical jingoistic 60s “hell yeah, America!” attitude, but I was quite enamored with the complexities of the characters. It features three men who are all “doing their duty,” but what that means is total different between them all. Nobody’s right or wrong here. All the performances are really strong, especially #AlecGuinness’ - I just wish he was in the movie more. The only thing keeping this movie from perfection is the runtime. This did not need to be almost 3 hours long. A solid 2hrs10min would’ve done this movie justice. And the big climactic bridge explosion was a little underwhelming. Maybe it’s because I knew it was coming, but it just needed a little more... oomph. Like throw the ending soundtrack to Aliens over this movie and I’d be on the edge of my seat!! Regardless, I’m glad I’ve finally checked this one off my list. Despite some personal shortcomings I had with it, it’s still a pretty damn impressive flick that’s worthy of being called a classic. Civil War (2024), written and directed by Alex Garland starring Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno, Nick Offerman, and Jesse Plemons. FANTASTIC, love the apolitical stance. The people who are pissed Garland didn’t take a side completely missed the point. There’s so many important things I saw in the story, the biggest being desensitization and dehumanization. Being in a war zone is the obvious one, but social media is another, one that hits much closer to the majority sitting behind our phones, being bombarded with images of war going on around the world. Another thing I noticed, especially with Cailee Spaeny’s character arc, is how in the end, all I could think of is she spiraled into Gyllenhaal’s Nightcrawler character. This behavior absolutely reminds me of content creators chasing that next viral hit at the expense of regular people. It feels so dehumanizing. And that is exactly how (I think) Spaeny’s character became in the end. It was scary when she took the picture 📷 On one hand, I thought wow, she’s far gone. But on the other, I know she’s gonna take some kickass photos. That obviously comes at a price. I also didn’t realize I was going to cry in this movie. Kirsten Dunst’s performance was amazing, emotions conveyed so subtle but you could just feel how drained she is, and the release she poured out at the end. Jesse Plemons’s scene was short but so intense! I had my eye at his trigger finger teasing the entire time. Sound design was untempered, the blasts and gunshots rocked the theater and I was loving it. This is a scary look into a possible future and Garland does not hold back. Essentially a road trip movie. • What worked: Military scenes felt realistic. I’m not an expert but they looked very good and professional. Beautiful photography, which is to be expected and a must for a film about photography. I went into this film sleepy but I was engaged throughout, to the extent I realized later that I forgot I was tired. Interesting to ponder about how one political figure can divide a country so much. Inspire so much hate that States unite against him, yet inspire so much loyalty as well. Americans will love this considering their current political climate. It's their worst fears coming true. • Imagine if there is ever a civil war in the US today. Lately it seems as if Guy Ritchie is releasing movies like his life depends on it. His latest film here highlights some of the ways his trademark style can breathe energy into a story, but also how his scripts can sometimes overwrite themselves. When this movie acts as a historical drama, it’s merely serviceable. The fundamental plot points are clear but some of the details can get blurred into a convoluted mess. When this movie embraces itself as a mindless action flick, however, it is a ton of fun. Ritchie’s witty dialogue compliments the unapologetic violence perfectly. The entire cast delivers in their respective performances. Henry Cavill is obviously the most notable as the leading character, but Eiza González is deserving of recognition for stealing scenes with an effortless charm. I do think this is a solid movie that’s on par for Guy Ritchie’s brand, but unfortunately I don’t think there’s much that makes this stand out as special from the director’s already deep filmography. It’s one of those movies where if you’re interested, you should see it.
