Original Type 1 Snapshot Photo c.1994 . Kevin Bacon/Tom Hanks/Bill Paxton Apollo 13 . The production of Apollo 13 was one of the most innovative films of all-time. The award winning movie based on the 1994 novel was filmed partially inside of a NASA reduced-gravity aircraft simulating the weightlessness of space for cinema. This aircraft was cleverly nicknamed the "Vomit Comet" because of the constant sickness that many of the cast and crew experienced while shooting. . This personal snapshot, along with several others I will be posting down the line, were taken by I'm assuming a member of cast or crew during filming. Besides some behind-the-scenes video footage, and a handful of full cast production photos, these could possibly be the only Type 1 photos taken during production! How cool is that? . #spaceman is a new @adamsandler movie on Netflix that has the usually comedic actor take on a more dramatic role. I have to imagine there is a parent that sees Adam Sandler in space and just flicks this on for their kid, and that’s going to be one hefty therapy bill. We are taken on a cosmic journey exploring depression, loneliness, self exploration, the end, the beginning, the heart, the mind and everything in between. All with the help of a HUGE FUCKING SPIDER. I personally hate spiders but with the mix of the unsettling image and the SOOTHING tones of #pauldano voice the character both kept me on edge but also intrigued me with a warmth of care and love. A metaphor for the misunderstood. Scary things can be beautiful. This movie did not blow me away but it’s certainly a film that makes you think and is a bit of a nightmarish dream. It’s fascinating in that’s it’s made in an unorthodox existential way but I just didn’t love it. Spaceman was released on Netflix on Friday, Feb. 23. The film follows Jakub, an astronaut who encounters an ancient creature half-a-year into his solo mission on the edge of the solar system. This isn't your average space movie. It's beautifully shot with impressive visuals, but Spaceman doesn't over-rely on that. As a whole, it's really a slow and methodical exploration of love, loneliness and grief, taking a deep look at Jakub's life. The fundamental premise of Spaceman is solid, as it makes sense that Jakub is reflective while exploring the universe alone. The problem is that the creature he encounters is simply a vessel to get him to think about his time on Earth. This could've been done in a more effective way, as the movie's formula is basically a question being asked and Jakub visualizing a memory through a distorted flashback over and over. It seemed somewhat confused in its messaging at times as well, with Carey Mulligan's character feeling like an afterthought. All of the performances were good, even though the flick doesn't ever really utilize Adam Sandler's biggest strengths. Still, he gives an emotive performance for what he was given. Paul Dano's voice work was a standout as well, bringing a sense of familiarity and emotion to an unknown creature. Overall, Spaceman isn't an overly memorable movie, but at the same time, there are several profound moments and it does tackle some relatable themes. I appreciate that this took a different approach than some other space films, focusing more on the astronaut himself than his surroundings. I enjoyed aspects of Spaceman, but as a whole, it didn't all come together. Spaceman is now available on Netflix and I decided to check it out because I love films that take place in space. I actually found myself enjoying it more than I expected when I saw the dim reviews. It’s visually appealing and has a great score, Adam Sandler leads as a depressed astronaut detached from his wife and he plays it well. Paul Dano as an alien spider is weird but he’s a pretty interesting character. It’s kinda aimless as being a space drama at points but I ended up warming to it near the end, with its good ending and great visual flurry of the Chopra cloud, and I think most people do to, it’s a Netflix film that tries at being something instead of a waste of time.
