Say hello to our new friend Apollo who recently joined the rescue after his person sadly passed away. Apollo is a large, mature GSD - 6.5 years old and weighing about 80 pounds. He's lived with one family his entire life and is in excellent health. 💙 This boy is used to being both indoors and outside as well; he's house and crate trained, food motivated (readily sits for a treat) and loves playing ball! Apollo is very social - friendly toward strangers and gets along well with others dogs. He's a regular at Bar K in St. Louis and for the past 4 years his best friend has been a Yorkie 😁 In his current foster home, Apollo is living with a 1 year old baby and he has previous experience around small children. It's the best animal-themed holiday of all: HAIRBALL AWARENESS DAY! So..to be aware: hairballs, also known as trichobezoars, are collections of hair that your cat throws up after they get lodged in their esophagus or stomach. While the occasional hairball can be normal, cats should only have them a few times per year. Many cat owners mistake hair in vomit as a hairball issue, when in fact it's really a primary vomiting issue, and could be an indication of a problem like hyperthyroidism, inflammatory bowel disease or parasites. You can help prevent hairballs by making sure your pet's fur is clean and well groomed, trying a hairball diet formulated with more fiber, or even using a hairball prevention treat. Not sure what to do? We're happy to help answer your questions.

Today is another awesome holiday celebrating two of our favorite things- pets and kiddos! While we love seeing these guys getting along, it's important that everyone stays safe. Here's some tips to let these creatures coexist peacefully: 🐾 Make sure pets have a safe space (crate, via cat door, etc) so they can get away from kids when they feel the need to 🐾 Teach kids to not bother pets while they are eating or sleeping 🐾 Ensure toys and other kid items aren't left unattended to potentially be ingested.

Exciting news to start the week...Rory (new name Rinny) is adopted! Rinny's newly-acquired pack of brothers & sisters includes a blind border collie, two Pomeranians and a few other herding mix dogs; we hear that he's fitting in nicely with all of them. His new mom also tells us that she secretly "loves him the best" - but here's hoping the other dogs don't find out! 😉😁 Rinny is getting additional work on his recall and he's already done well enough to earn some limited off-leash time in his new home. All donated items will go to local rescues like Gateway Pet Guardian, Feral Companions, and more! Instead of tossing new or used unwanted/unused items into the trash, bring them to Zoomies.
