Das Hagelkreuz Am Wasserturm, einem Stadtteil von Mönchengladbach. Das Steinkreuz wurde 1711 aufgestellt und steht seit dem 08.09.2008 unter Denkmalschutz. Es handelt sich um ein ca. 3,40 m großes Wegekreuz aus Liedberger Sandstein, das auf einer jüngeren Sockelplatte aus Basaltlava steht. Der reliefartige Korpus ist relativ klein. Die Basis des Kreuzes zeigt eine niedrige Nische in Form einer Konche, vor der eine halbrunde Abstellfläche für die bei der Prozessionen mitgeführte Monstranz auskragt. Ein kleines schmiedeeisernes Geländer stellt eine jüngere Ergänzung dar. Zur Zeit steht ein Blumentopf darin. Auf dem Sockel wird eine Tafel angebracht. Dort steht, dass dieses Kreuz am 11.06.1771 von Eheleuten Gerherd Segers Burgermr und Agnes Cloth errichtet wurde. Darunter befinden sich zwei Wappenschilde mit den Initialen GS und AS. Today's #Take5 is all about crosses - in particular high or standing crosses. These are free-standing Christian crosses made of stone and often richly decorated (we are not talking about the pre-Christian Celtic and Pictish examples in this post). There was a unique Early Medieval tradition in Britain and Ireland of raising large sculpted stone crosses, presumably based on earlier wood or metal examples but none of these have survived. The earliest stone examples seem to be from the territory of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria. The relief decoration tends to be a mixture of religious figures and decorative motifs such as knotwork and interlace. They are typically up to 2 metres high, although some are much taller like the Tall Cross at Monasterboice which is 7 metres tall. They are monumental survivors of the Insular art of the 6th-9th centuries and below are five great examples. Hawsker Cross, 10th century Anglo-Scandinavian cross in a garden in #hawsker I had planned to ride the roadbikething today but it was sleeting so I went for a #trailrun instead. The two crosses documented today on route to João Pessoa are equally monumental. Both are early 18th century. The first, a replica, is at the Monastery of Saint Anthony in Igarassu. The original cross was toppled over by a car and lies broken in the sacristy of the church. The second cross is at the Monastery of Saint Albert in Goiânia; its former atrium is now a park graced by royal palms. So this is quite interesting. This might not be prehistoric but it certainly is very old and it’s the ’stump cross’, one of four sanctuary crosses on the roads leading to Beverley Minster. If you were a fugitive on the run in medieval times and you got to one of these crosses your persuers would have to pay the princely sum of £4 to apprehend you. This figure increased astronomically as you got closer to the Minster and they might have to stump up £144 if they caught up with you at the Minster’s Quire! The most interesting is the one about the origin of this place name: as the people from #Viveiro, #Xove, #Cervo and O #Valadouro disagreed about the boundaries of their respective counties, a hag (well, actually the Hag...) appeared and, pointing to a place with her stick, she proposed to put there a cross that would serve as a boundary stone between the four districts. And so it was done. В 862 году призвали на Русь варягов, и стали они здесь править. Поскольку именно под 862 годом Изборск впервые упомянут в русском документе, от этого года и принято отсчитывать историю Изборска. На Труворовом городище, где находилась первая Изборская крепость, сейчас кладбище. Очень живописный вид открывается от старинной Никольской церкви с множеством вмонтированных в стены каменных крестов. А самый знаменитый крест - по соседству, у самой дорожки, идущей через кладбище. Местное предание напрямую связывает его с Трувором - мол, поставлен крест сей на могиле основателя Изборска, умершего в 864 году. В 9 веке ни местное население, ни скандинавы (к которым, вероятно, этнически принадлежал Трувор) ещё не приняли христианства, так что вряд ли на могиле язычника Трувора водрузили бы христианский крест. Крест наверняка помоложе, века примерно 14, характерной для Псковщины формы, с характерными же надписями: Царь Славы Иисус Христос Ника, а в самом центре - прорисовка 8-конечного крестика. ☦️☦️☦️ 🇬🇧 TRUVOR'S CROSS According to the Old Russian Chronicle, in 862, Varangians were invited to rule Old Rus'. One of them, Rurik, became the founder of Rurikovich dynasty. The other one, Truvor, governed the fort town Izborsk. On the plot of the ancient settlement, there is a cemetery. Among the modern graves and 15th century stone crosses, there is the famous 2 meters high Truvor Cross. According the legend, it was installed over Truvor's grave. Truvor himself was not a Christian, and I can hardly believe he would like to be buried under a Christian cross. The cross dates back to 14-15 centuries and has a traditional local form.
