Embroidery West Bengal, India Interestingly, Kantha embroidery derives its name ‘Kantha’ which means ‘rags’ in Sanskrit, which reflects the fact that Kantha embroidery is made up of discarded garments or cloths. Kantha originated from the way in which Bengali housewives mended old clothes by taking out a strand of thread from the colorful border of their saris and making simple designs with them. Taking the old and reimposing it into something useful. Far from trend-setting, or even artfulness, kantha was constructed originally for the most basic and practical aspiration to keep warm.The traditional form of Kantha embroidery was done with soft dhotis and saris, with a simple running stitch along the edges. For centuries, the techniques of the hereditary craft were, and still are, passed down from mother to daughter. Rumal is Persian word which means Handkerchief. The earliest records of the region dates back to 2nd century BC, making Chamba hill station one of the most ancient destinations in the state. As you travel through the country, with every inter state border you cross language, attire, food changes. Each region in India has their distinct embroidery style and story to share. For instance, Kutch embroidery was taught to shoemakers (known as mochis in India) around 300 years ago. The name comes from a district Kutch in Gujarat(India). Where a blank page or a vast ‘empty’ landscape could be feared, here it represents an opportunity to rekindle old possibilities with new ways of seeing and being. This is the spring arm knitted scarf we'll be making this Sun (20th Oct 2 - 5pm) at The New Artisans Gallery in Milsons Point. Knitting, using only our arms (no needles), we'll complete a fabulous long free flowing organic design made from French linen yarn and fabric yarn, it is approximately 2ms long. We'll also make the fabric yarn ourselves and learn both the knit and purl stitch. Perfect for the cool mornings and evenings this lovely time of years brings.
