Voici un endroit très scénique à découvrir dans le nord de l'île de Skye 🏴 Située sur la péninsule de Trotternish, l'église de Bornesketaig date de 1810 et a été abandonnée dans les années 20 au profit d'un édifice plus récent construit dans les environs. Seuls trois des murs de l'église subsistent et donnent à cette bâtisse une allure assez remarquable qui attire votre regard quand vous longez la partie ouest de l'A855, au niveau de Kilmuir. C'est aussi un joli terrain de jeu pour les photographe de passage, l'église offrant à chaque fois un visage différent. Le coin de ciel bleu sur cette photo est trompeur. The original monument, a cross of red granite, was put up in 1871, but blew down several years later. In 1880 this new cross was erected, and refurbished in 1922. Flora MacDonald was well known in her lifetime for her help in getting Bonnie Prince Charlie from Uist to Skye. It is said that her funeral brought 3000 people from far and wide. This color photograph gives a good view of the high Celtic Cross marking Flora MacDonald's grave at Kilmuir cemetery in north Trotternish with the wonderful panorama of the Minch and the Isle of Harris in the background. In this same cemetery are buried some of the MacArthur's, the great pipers of the MacDonalds of Duntulm. The grave of Flora MacDonald, Kilmuir Cemetery, Isle of Skye. Flora MacDonald died on the 5th of March 1790. #onthisday One of the most romantic characters in Scottish history, Flora MacDonald is famous for helping Bonnie Prince Charlie escape from Scotland after the defeat of the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. After his defeat at the battle of Culloden Moor in 1746, Bonnie Prince Charlie was forced to flee for his life. After two months on the run he arrived at the island of South Uist where he met 24-year-old Flora. As both her step-father and her fiancée Allan MacDonald were in the Hanovarian army of King George II, she would have seemed an unlikely ally. However after some initial hesitation, she agreed to help the Prince escape. She managed to get permission from her step-father, the commander of the local militia, to travel from Uist to the mainland, accompanied by two servants and a crew of six boatmen. The Prince was disguised as Betty Burke, an Irish spinning maid. They set sail in a small boat from Benbecula on 27th June 1746 to Skye. After hiding overnight in a cottage, they made their way overland to Portree where the Prince was able to get a boat to the island of Raasay and from there, passage back to France. Charles is said to have presented Flora with a locket containing his portrait. They never met again. Charles died in Rome on 31 January 1788. When news of the escape broke, Flora was arrested and imprisoned at Dunstaffnage Castle, Oban and then briefly in the Tower of London. She was released in 1747 and returned to Scotland. Day 6 done! We've taken it easy today because - typically - I feel crap 🤦🏻♀️ We still managed to see plenty! Visited the Clachan Erisco Standing Stones at Borve, had a wander around Kingsburgh Community Woodland, finally visited Rha Waterfalls and also revisited the iron age souterrain just near where we are staying. While getting to the Hebrides, and thus the Calanais Standing stones, was not on the itinerary for this trip, I did get a spot of “testing standing stones for potential time trave” at the Duirinish Stone on the Isle of Skye. It’s not ancient (it was only placed there at the turn of the century) but you can’t deny that it is a power spot. I stopped to check out the ruins of St. Mary’s Church at the base of the hill but booked it up as soon as I noticed the stone. And I am sure glad I did because the view out over Dunvegan and Kilmuir was stunning. Flora MacDonald was buried there but there is more to discover, the Angus Martin Grave for example. Angus Martin was born during the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots in a time of religious upheaval and political unrest. His family was an important one and affiliated to the MacDonalds of Sleat. Angus grew up and became 1st of Bealach, the tackman’s position was one of power and showed the trust the MacDonald placed in him. Legend has it that on his way he had taken his gravestone from a Scottish King’s grave on the island of Iona and brought it to Skye for his own interment. This is rather unlikely since the Scottish Reformation and the destruction of religious pictures and effigies as well as the dismanteling of monasteries had reached its peak already in the 1560s, i.e. around the time Angus Martin was born.
