Day 9 of our NC500 road trip adventure ... part 1 ... waking up after spending the night at Applecross campsite (highly recommended) we got out on the road, letting the deer family across safely. Today we were headed for what we had both been looking forward to this whole trip the drive along the iconic Bealach Na Ba ... safe to say it did not disappoint. We reached the viewpoint and hopped out the van to take in the views. It was pretty darn windy but it felt great to have the cobwebs blasted out 😅 the views as we continued on the drive down the single track road between the mountains were blinking fantastic! An absolute highlight of our trip. Uk road trip summer 2021 part 11.. it was time to hit the famous NC500 and make our way round this iconic route before starting our drive south back home! I made it to John O’Groats which means I’ve driven the length of the country & we pitched up on a hill overlooking a beautiful sandy beach! This was arguably my favourite ever camp due to the view alone! The Scottish highlands easily has some of the best beaches! Day 5 NC500 First stop John O Groats, a picture at the signpost the on to Puffin Croft petting farm, worth a visit if you've got kids! The Scotlands Heaven tidal pond... I can see why it gets it name, we even saw a seal swimming in the bay. Dunnet Head, the most Northerly point... absolutely freezing!! We called in Thurso and had a wander through the town and found the ruins of Old St Peters Church before walking along the beach watching a couple of surfers. Suilven Diaries 👉🏻 SWIPE to see our highlights of the hike A twenty mile adventure through the wonderful Assynt scenery absolutely flew past in the fab company of @robcarrtours and @lewisjones1411 After years of feeling drawn to Suilven every time I climbed Stac Pollaidh, Cul Beag, Quinag and The Fiddler, conditions and availability finally aligned to make it a go. It was such a special moment for me personally when I reached the summit and it was quite magical just sitting there for ages, taking in the views and watching the rain clouds sweep past us to the north. Continued .... Day 8 of our NC500 road trip .... we travelled into a little place called Torridon, this was a glorious little place. We spotted a place called The Torridon Stores and Cafe and this was well worth stubbling across. The food was outstanding, it may just look like a toastie but we would both get back in the van right now and travel the obscene about of miles just have another one. We purchased a couple of homemade lasagne pies too (yes I did say lasagne in the form of a pie 😋) After filling our bellies we headed back out on the road stopping along the way at various spots, taking in all that highland air and the views. Finally catching a glimpse of some of the infamous highland coo's 😁 We ended the day in Applecross ... oh and a rainbow to make the evening view even more beautiful. Our day kicked off at the Bone Caves. The hike to the bone caves is a 2.5 mile walk through a limestone valley. The caves were given the name ‘Bone Caves’ due to the skeletal remains of Brown Bears, Lynx, Reindeer and Polar bears found there. After that, we headed to Corrieshalloch Gorge. The dramatic gorge was created by glacial meltwater. A suspension bridge guides you above the mile long gorge. From here you can view the Falls of Measach falling into the river Droma. Its name meaning ‘ugly hollow’ – I can say it’s quite the opposite! The dark, humid gorge walls are the perfect habitat for ferns and moss to thrive. We then drove towards Torridon and had to give the old chap Callum the Stag a visit! He was abandoned by his herd so had remained close to the car park ever since. We’re so happy we were able to see him🥰 He is a Red deer that grabs the attention of everyone that sees him! We ended up at a park4night overlooking Loch Shieldaig. And what a joy it was to stay at! We saw a fighter jet and a golden eagle whilst we were there! We visited the Sango Sands viewpoint before leaving the campsite and hitting the road. After crossing Kylesku Bridge, the landscape changed yet again as we cruised down the west coast. The mountainous range getting more colossal and rocky. The main attraction of the day was the Wailing Widow Waterfall. Wailing Widow Falls is a 50ft waterfall crashing into a canyon. It is located near Kylesku bridge, north of Ullapool. The falls are a ten minute walk from the car park, and it can be a bit difficult to get to due to the extremely muddy terrain. A lot of people get put off by this, but it is well worth the effort once you get to it! Our second pit stop was another incredible waterfall! Located near Clashnessie bay, Clashnessie Falls is a dramatic and inspiring 15m waterfall. Clashnessie has a mild microclimate due to its location being close to the Atlantic Ocean Gulf Stream. One of the best beaches on the route is known to be Achmelvich Bay. Gorgeous blue water lines the white sandy shore of Achmelvich. Its beaches like this one that make you truly realise that people aren’t talking rubbish when they compare the highlands bays to the Caribbean! This beach is known to have sightings of porpoises, dolphins and minke whale, as well as numerous sea birds!🐳🐬 A short walk from Achmelvich Bay is the Hermits Castle. (Annoyingly no dogs are allowed - but the internet doesn’t tell you that!!) This ‘castle’ was built around 1950 and it took the architect six months to create this concrete structure single handedly. Measuring less than 10m squared, it is believed to be the smallest castle in Europe! The last stop before our park up was Ardvreck Castle. Dating back to approximately 1490, this castle was owned by the Macleods of Assynt. It was captured by the Mackenzies in 1672 – Around 50 years later they built Calda House using stone from the castle, and it’s remained a ruin ever since. From here we headed to our park up for the night at the base of Stac Pollaidh. Stac Pollaidh is 610m tall with a distinctive rocky ridge. *** LINO PRINTING WORKSHOPS *** So yes I have been insanely busy lately but now the exhibition has finsihed, I can know look at doing some workshops! Lots of people enjoyed the printing at Duncansby and Lyth, so many people have asked for longer workshops so they can carve and print their own design. To do a single layer small lino, design, carve and print something about 6x4 or 7x5 as a group session will take around 3 to 4 hours so we dont have to rush! If you are interested in doing this please message or comment below. I do have a list of names already. Im wondering where and when. For me being in Keiss naturally Keiss Hall would be so much easier for me, so thats an option. Also some work in the day so an evening workshops seems good I can do mondays fridays and possibly sundays. I will however try to arrange a day time one for those who are free during the day. First stop of day 2 on the NC500 route had to be John O’Groats to see the famous signpost. It looks like it’s had a new paint job 🤩 Our second stop of the day was to see Duncansby Stacks. The prominent Duncansby Stacks are believed to have stood there for 6000 years and are slowly eroding away into the North Sea. The tallest stack is 60m in height! Next up was Dunnet Head and on our drive to it, a stag ran in front of us 🦌 This is the most northerly part of mainland UK. The landscape really started to change between here and our next stop. It became mountainous landscapes surrounded by lochs, and the road takes you straight through the beauty😍 We pushed further along the north coast to the Ard Neakie Lime Kilns. Built in 1870, this is the remains of the limestone quarry. The 2 storey building was a ferry house. The quarry is located on Loch Eriboll of which the Loch itself holds some historical importance. This was the place where the 33 remaining U-boats surrendered at the end of World War 2. It is also one of the deepest sea lochs in Scotland! Our last attraction of the day was Smoo Cave. The word ‘Smoo’ comes from the Norse ‘smuga’ meaning hole or hiding place. The cave features a large skylight and beautiful waterfall. It was created by both sea and fresh water erosion. Artefacts found in the cave date back to the Iron Age, vikings and Neolithic times. We ended the day at Sango Sands Oasis campsite. Day 8 of our NC500 road trip .. started the day off with a stop off at Gairloch Beach. Not much footage from this beach but it was golden sand and blue sea 🌊 just what we needed first thing in the morning. Back in the dugs we headed over to Victoria Falls, this was a pretty breath-taking view and place to visit even with the weather being abit drab. Its key to note that alot of the travelling from place to place makes this trip. There are lots of pullins that are specifically there so you can jump out and just take a minute to look and enjoy the views. NC500 Day Two Guide 📌 Save for your dog friendly trip in the Highlands. We told Olive there was a lot of walking this day.. (📸 cover picture 🤣 #mood ) Woke up in Mellon Udrigle & had the most amazing sunrise & walk along the beach. (📸 2 & 3 ) Stop 1. Gruinard Bay Viewpoint & Gruinard Bay. Stop 2. Corrieshalloch Gorge. Check out our previous reel for more information (📸 4 & 5 ) Stop 3. Ullapool. This charming little fishing town is super dog friendly & you cannot leave without sampling the most delicious food! On this trip we headed to Westcoast Deli to pick up some nibbles! Their quiche is to die for & of course we had to get one of their millionaires slices too! They’re not dog friendly due to them being a deli but they have tables outside in the nice weather & sitting at the new seafront with your takeaway is fab! (📸 7 - Banquet Box) Visit Harbour Gallery & pick up some local art or gifts for taking home. We have the cutest highland cow print from here. (📸 8 ) Cult Cafe is also a must! Again due to the size they’re only dog friendly outside but offer takeaway if the weather is bad. (📸 9 ) Now you have 2 choices. You can go inland & go through Knockan Crag Reserve OR you can take the coast route like we did…If in a motorhome I would strongly advise avoiding the latter. Stop 4. Lochinver. Enjoy lots of local eateries, Visit the local butcher & I also love Rockpool for some crystals & gifts. There is a Spar for any essentials & also motorhome services/waste disposal at the leisure centre. Don’t leave without getting a famous pie from Lochinver Larder. Stop 5. Ardvreck Castle. Stop 6. Wailing Widow Falls. These spectacular 50ft falls can be seen from above or below. Be careful with kids & paws as the path can be a scramble. Use your discretion when arriving & visit the following morning if it’s too busy. Please park responsibly. (📸 11 ) Stop 7. Achmelvich. We stayed at a little aire right at the beach with direct access. Make sure to use the services at Lochinver before/after you pitch up. Enjoy a fire & sunset on one of the most beautiful beaches on the west coast. (📸 12 ) 📸 13 - Highland Cow at Sunset
