The Hippolyte is a granite island off Fortescue Bay along the Tasman Peninsula. It soars over 65 metres above the Tasman Sea and is home to a multitude of coastal wildlife including over 10,000 pairs of breeding seabirds. Look closely at these pics and see if you can spot the black-faced cormorants, Australasian gannets and crested terns that call the Hippolyte home. Thanks to crew member Ange for the pics.
Ok, last week I cheated and posted pictures of Devils without context. I have seen one in the wild at the side of the road for 1-2 seconds as I drove by and that's it. Many Tasmanians have lived their whole lives and never spotted one. So, just before I left, this was my best chance to get up close. The Unzoo is a concept where there are no cages or paddocks keeping the animals in, they come and go as they please. The $50 entry goes towards the conservation of these animals. Only the Devil's are locked in, and that's because of a rare type of cancer that's sweeping through the population. The zoo is situated on the Tasman Peninsula, where a devil-proof fence has been set up to separate the main Tasmanian population from the peninsula population, meaning the peninsula is the only place where there are no recorded cases of cancer. This cancer is the only type in the world that can be passed on by biting, and as these animals fight over food, they bite each other's faces, and spread the disease. A tumour will grow on the face to such a degree that the animal can't feed anymore and dies of starvation. The video is a devil eating a wallaby leg, it eats the bones, toenails, everything. Tessellated Pavement Sunrise - 2014 One of the top 10 sunrises I have ever seen. It's a big commitment driving down to Eaglehawk neck for sunrise but I hit the jackpot on this morning. I was still figuring out how to capture high dynamic ranges at that point so it's a stroke of luck that I event captured this. The colours in the RAW file are so vivid I had to pull back the saturation. In person it was mind blowing. There's a copy hanging in a few homes and even the best jewellery shop in Hobart has it on their wall @jaihayjeweller The tiled rocks are mostly siltstone that formed about 300 million years ago. The rocks were fractured by the movement of the Earth and resulted in what is called jointing. Jointing itself is not incredibly uncommon, but the presence of salt crystals and consistent erosion by the Tasman Sea’s waves and sediment deepened the pattern to give it its appearance. A glimmering snapshot taking while meandering through Port Arthur. Due to the sad history of this place I was scared to be visiting alone, as I am easily spooked, but this town is one of the most quaint and peaceful places I’ve seen in Tasmania so far. Mount Brown! This peak requires a bit of a balancing scramble to get to the top. I wouldn’t consider it challenging as long as you take your time (disclaimer, I’m able bodied and relatively fit). It’s more difficult going down than up, as there are no steps available. Once you pass the short ascent to the summit, you can be blessed with 360° views of the Tasman sea, featuring beautifully harsh Dolomite cliffs in the distance, Tasman Island and there is plenty of flat enough rock space to enjoy a picnic before a cool dip into Crescent Bay. There is also plenty of beautiful local wildlife living here. In fact. Thank goodness summer is over and I can go back to the beach! We were on our way out to the main entrance for White Beach when I saw a seal in the water near the shore! And a cluster of humans with cameras and expressions of awe standing around. But by the time we parked the car and walked down there, the seal had swum away. We could just make him out getting further and away. Just look at this glorious stage for the Other Folk I found at the end of the bay. Clearly, an old set of steps for giants just got knocked over there.
