I do love a bit of the make do & mend attitude which seems to be rubbing off on Noah! He's been asking to learn how to sew so I picked up some little kits from @lovewilko & he got through them in one rainy afternoon so last week he started making a fossil collection bag using the template in the @fiddlesticks.education fossil pack & he really enjoyed it. It was a little tricky at times but he didn't give up, a couple parts he decided to stitch again & now he has a gorgeous, functional little bag to take fossil hunting. He's always loved watching me mend things at home & often tells people "Mum's a mender, she always fixes things" so I think he quite enjoyed being able to join in while I fixed a hole in my favourite maxi dress & patched up the knees in Noah's leggings. We will use French seams on the sides and bias tape around the arm openings. These are all great techniques to have in your sewing skill set! If time allows variations can be added such as a ruffled flounce. Pattern will be provided. This dress is available in sizes 18 months to girls size 7/8.

• a couple of useful things lulu learned this week and last. • how to repair holes in stuffed animals! 🪡 🧵 thus, she can repair holes in clothes, blankets, doll clothes, etc. so proud of her! • also, lulu loves to cook, so she asked to cook a meal all by herself and only asked for help doing dangerous things, like draining noodles, etc. she chose to make their favorite: “homemade” hamburger helper (not completely homemade, as she used boxed mac & cheese, but she seasoned it all herself- we try to use as little boxed stuff as possible, but come on ... sometimes they just really want shells & cheese) • here’s her recipe: - 2 lbs. ground deer meat (use what you have, would be great with the ground meatless kind too!) - 2 boxes of shells & sauce (or 1 family size) - garlic salt - montreal chicken seasoning - could also add chopped onions + add meat to skillet and PRO TIP: while it’s still raw, add more garlic salt than you think is necessary, along with a couple shakes of montreal chicken seasoning. (these *at this stage make all difference*) brown your meat. + add your macaroni noodles and water and *PRO TIP: any time you boil noodles (or make rice) add a spoonful of chicken bouillon granules to the water- makes it all taste so much better!!* + when the noodles are al dente and you’ve drained them and the meat is browned - add them together in a large pot and THEN add the “cheese” pouches. • stir it all up and serve with steamed broccoli 🥦 or green beans. • this was a dinner they all loved and she was super proud of making. • if you want to make your own mac & cheese it’s super easy to do, just try to steer away from boxed dinners- they’re not good for us and it’s fun to remake healthier versions of them (and teach our kids to do it too!) ♥️ #ohlulu #dontgrowupitsatrap #teachthemyoung #teachyourkidstocook #teachthemtosew @ohlulu224 i love you so! you make mama proud. ♥️

Hi, I'm Cali Roberta. I am the Industrial instructor for TSL's Sewing Salon program. In my role as Production Manager I do R&D, pattern drafting, and write instructions that will be used by participants to fill customer orders. I received my first sewing machine at the age of seven. My own skilled grandmothers (and other "grandmas") inspired both garment making and quilting. I've been part of the KC fashion scene specializing in lingerie, swimwear, and wedding gowns and have even worked at Missouri Sewing Machine Co selling machines. I am currently focused on leather accessories and fine art where my soul belongs. The camaraderie and self-sufficiency that is taught and lived at TSL is a long held mission of mine. I hope to share that with the community. I also hope to encourage creativity as an outlet for therapeutic benefit and emotional release. My favorite thing to do with textiles is to play with colors, prints, and textures. Back in January, I set a project for children in the creative club that run to make a scooter/bike bag. HOPE was one of the words we used and talked about the meaning. Who would have known, that the word HOPE would be so significant in our lives now. At the start of the the first lockdown, I sent out some kits to children who would enjoy sewing. Now that we are again spending a lot of time indoors, creative kits are a great gift, they keep children occupied. I am very grateful to have a daughter that has caught the sewing bug. Crafting and sewing were always how I spent my time together with my mom growing up. A couple of days ago, Vivi finished her #bhlshirreddress with straps instead of sleeves and couldn't wait to wear it! I know how I feel when I wear something I have made myself and I can see that same feeling in Vivi now. It's confidence building. Introducing an ompmpom Scrap Friend made by my eldest boy who is 7. He's never shown any interest or patience for 'craft' except minecraft and today he announced he wanted to make a cuddly toy! My heart skipped as we looked for scraps and off cuts of fabric, drew a design, drafted a pattern, cut out the fabric, hand sewed the face, used a sewing machine cut up a scrap bag of felted ends for stuffing and voila! Clive has evolved! We're (hopefully) making a rabbit for his brother's 3rd birthday next week. It was a lovely experience and he's been playing with him all day.. It took a couple of hours...
