I started downloading Theo Parrish’ music on Kaazaa after reading about his work in Bassic Groove Magazine, I think it was @passet but not entirely sure. Hearing Theo’s unique and hypnotic deep house on mediocre .rm files quickly convinced me to find his music on cd. This was the only one available for order in NL at the time: a japanese version of the first Sound Signature compilation. 🇺🇸 Theo Parrish & Maurissa Rose ”This Is For You” (2019). The other day I watched ”Somewhere in Detroit”, the new short documentary about Underground Resistence, the electronic music scene in Detroit and how people like ”Mad” Mike Banks decided to turn their back on mainstream music business by taking lead and ownership of their music, the culture and the movement they created in late 80s and early 90s. It touched me deeply and sparked thoughts about todays music scene where big tech companies have taken the role of both record labels and music media, but also how we preserves the legacy locally, writes our own cultural history and influence what foot prints we leave for new generations to follow. Theo Parrish is not featured in the documentary but have been one of the most prolific and strongest characters in the Detroit music scene for the last decades. Originally from Chicago he graduated from university studies in Kansas City before landing in Detroit in the mid 1990s. Since then he have constantly as a producer, DJ and curator delivered a deeply personal take on AfricanAmerican music like jazz, soul, funk, disco, house and techno, but he’s also incorporated elements from European artists like Vangelis and West African afrobeat in productions and DJ-sets. This collaboration with vocalist Maurissa Rose from a couple of years back sounds quite different compared to the slowly grooving house jams with razor sharp high-hats and roughly chopped samples he was known for in the beginning of his musical journey. ”This is For You”, both the vocal and instrumental version, sounds more closer to the Hi-Tech soul and techno you hear from Detroit brethren like Underground Resistance and Carl Craig. The arrangement and production is just astonishing on this beautiful piece of music deeply routed in tradition but with an determined look towards the future, celebrating the many everyday heroes around us, who day bay day continue to give to others, grinding and hustle, spreading love and care, when times are tough. #theoparrish #detroittechno #realhousemusic

21 days of Black Jazz- Part 13. Well, those of you in the know are aware there is no release for the #13, for obvious reasons. However, that was not an obstacle that was going to stop me on this mission of delivering 21 posts to honor the label. Insert this gem that came out around 10 years ago. World renowned DJ Theo Parrish was one of 4 DJs that got involved with the Snow Dog record label out of Japan to issue a compilation of some of Black Jazz series highlights. Theo of course does not miss a beat hear, providing a thoroughly enjoyable selection over 2 disc's. DJ Muro, Gilles Peterson, and DJ Mitsu also put out comps on the label. Roy Ayers - Drive | 1988 Starting the week off right with this hugely under appreciated 80s work from Mr. Ayers. Not sure what really differs this version from the album “Lots of Love” released in 1983 on Roy’s own Uno Melodic label other than just being re-released on the small but great Ichiban Records. I do know tho this is a lot cheaper to acquire and comes with this awesome cover photo instead 🚴🏾♂️ A record ahead of it a time. Roy’s playing around with Afrobeat, boogie and more. It of course includes the classic track ‘Chicago’, a touchstone for Theo Parrish, Kenny Dixon Jnr. and more topnotch DJs. Some of the side-peeps on this album include: Terri Wells, Peter Brown, Lesette Wilson, Harold Land Jr., Steve Cobb, Brian Jackson, Jorge Dalto and William Allen. “D.C City”, “Everybody” and the Fela inspired “Black Family” are also stand outs cuts on here.
