First us I want to say this is Chelle’s amazing explanation from a @walmart in Paradise Valley. One more day to go. This recital and its sister at St Mary's in Charnwood on Sunday evening, have been a labour of love. Jeremy Kimber (good friend, fabulous pianist, ex -Welsh College of Music and Drama like me,) first offered me one of the Lunch time concert series at Emmanuel before COVID. I was gob-smacked if I'm honest. I had never expected to be offered one of these!! We'd just done the Rachmaninov at St Mary's when he mentioned Brahms' Second Sonata for piano and cello, but then the lockdowns came and then we lost my Dad and then his Mum. Finally, this year, the stars have aligned and the day is practically here. ✨ We have both worked our butts off! My brain is trashed!! Amongst the other pieces of music that we are playing, the Brahms is massive. Four movements, taxing both technically and musically. It has been a huge endeavour to get to know it and hopefully do it justice. I have never sworn so creatively over such a lengthy period of time...... The piano part also, is absolutely massive - Jeremy is not just an accompanist here, this is absolutely a partnership and I'm so grateful to get this opportunity to play with such a fab musician again. Emmanuel in Loughborough has the most amazing acoustic (makes my life a lot easier) and Jeremy's nine foot Steinway lives there. I am looking forward to both the concerts, but I'm also looking forward to them being done, as I am looking forward to some head space again 🤯 and I know my family are desperate to hear me play something else!! I'd like to thank Martyn and the Boys for their patience with my endless practice and appalling language. Wish us luck. This month marks the end of my 4 years PhD position – however I didn’t manage to finalise my doctoral work in time. 😢 It will be spring next year that I will hopefully defend the practice based research to participatory design practices that deal with social and political struggles. Meanwhile I keep revisiting these banners that I made for the research week @sintlucasantwerpen @_slarg_ They are graphic representations of participative design processes, visualising often invisible infrastructures. Rooted in long-term self initiated projects my PhD research ’Subjective Design’ unpacks and questions the underlying methodologies and conditions of the collaborative processes. The infographics have been used as an ongoing artistic tool throughout the process to somehow materialise the conceptual structures, the ecosystems and methodologies. What is presented here is research-in-process; a collage of related but incomplete mappings. Feminist philosopher, activist and head of research @_slarg_ Petra Vanbrabandt discovered new readings in the work that brought me further in thinking about ‘Subjective Design’. It has the term ‘subject‘ in it and that is she who acts (opposed to an object that is acted upon). To become a subject is to become a political subject, an acting agency, affiliating with Hannah Arendt “The Human Condition”, addressing political awakening.
