Happy #EarthDay! Reflecting on my birthday trip to Anchorage last September with my favorite explorer, @faith__ak. We unexpectedly caught the season’s first snow while hiking Little O’Malley Peak. The hike was breathtaking (the fall colors were giving), yet there were numerous times we should have considered turning back—when it began to rain, when we encountered descending hikers who were visibly cold and huddled, when we heard thunder, when hail started, and finally, when the rain turned to sleet. By then, we were at the top. We added layers, hurried down for warmth, and we were welcomed by better weather and a stunning rainbow. We got lucky.

Featured here the Harding Ice Field! This is one of the most popular hikes in Alaska and rightfully so! One of only 4 icefields left in the United States, Harding Icefield spawns up to 40 glaciers of all types. And is the largest contained entirely within the United States.
