Outra curiosidade é que quando houve o terramoto em Lisboa em 1755 a Catedral sofreu também danos, na sua cúpula e no campanário. Ver o pÃŽr do sol aqui é ver a sua construção assumir uns tons dourados magnÃficos. Por isso sem dúvida que deves incluir uma passagem neste belo monumento. Para visitares o seu interior tem o custo de 10â¬, no entanto mesmo que não queiras gastar esse valor, o exterior deves pelo menos visitar!
We gebruikten Mexico als uitvalsbasis voor Midden Amerika ð²ðœ geen uitgebreide roadtrip deze keer, maar een paar dagen aan de kust in Yucatan voor een kleine sneak peak. Ik struin hier voor het eerst langs de Maya ruïnes in Muyil, eten voor het eerst cactus en doen ons tegoed aan taco's. Uniek in de Yucatan zijn de vele cenotes. Door meteorietinslagen zijn gaten in de grond ontstaan die vol gelopen zijn met water. Er stond dit keer weinig op mijn to do lijstje, maar duiken in een cenote was een absolute must! En dus vertrek ik met een instructeur en een paar mede avonturiers naar Dos Ojos. Hier liggen twee cenotes als 'twee ogen' naast elkaar, ondergronds met elkaar verbonden. Het is een duik in een cavern, wat wil zeggen dat er altijd een natuurlijke lichtbron aanwezig is. Dat betekent echter niet dat het licht is! We gaan gewapend met zaklamp naar beneden, communicatie gaat met lichtsignalen en als een treintje volgen we de duiklijn. Er valt echter genoeg te bewonderen! Waar je normaliter door grotten heen loopt om alle prachtige stalactieten en -mieten te bewonderen, drijven we er nu doorheen en zwemmen er kleine visjes om ons heen. Tijdens de eerste duik wijken we een stukje van de lijn af om boven te komen in de 'bat cave'. Zoals de naam al doet vermoeden, staat deze grot niet helemaal vol met water en aan het plafond hangen ontelbaar veel kleine vleermuisjes. Zo bijzonder! Onze luchtbellen zitten in de tunnels als spiegels tegen de oppervlakte aangeplakt. Ze weerkaatsen het licht en zien er daardoor uit als zilveren spiegels. Het helderblauwe water vanaf de onderkant bekijken daar waar het daglicht naar binnen schijnt is magisch en ik moet me bedwingen om niet een paar snorkelaars boven me aan hun vinnen te trekken ð€ð een onvergetelijke ervaring waardoor ik wederom zo blij ben dat ik mijn PADI besloot te halen ð€©ð De kust van Yucatan is wederom onwijs Amerikaans en toeristisch. We gebruiken het vooral als uitvalsbasis om te werken en ons volgende avontuur te plannen. Ooit wil ik op zoek naar het échte Mexico. Maar voor nu ben ik tevreden met deze eerste kleine indruk, onze knusse penthouse en tijdelijke kattenvriendjes die in en uit kwamen lopen ðŸ

Na El Salvador doken we het buurland in: Guatemala ð¬ð¹ Die hadden we al een tijdje op de radar staan vanwege de Maya ruïne Tikal. Op naar het warme en klamme noorden dus voor meer inkijkjes in de geschiedenis. En wauw, Tikal is absoluut de moeite waard! In alle vroegte liepen we, omgeven door ontelbaar veel beestjes, naar de eerste tempels. Het complex is gigantisch (en dan te bedenken dat slechts een deel is opgegraven) evenals de tempels die tot 70m hoog de lucht in torenen. Het bleef niet bij Tikal ð€ een stukje verderop vind je Uaxactun. Een klein dorpje met opgravingen aan de randen. Geen toerist te bekennen en dat betekent op je gemakje door het verleden kan struinen. Datzelfde geldt voor Yaxha richting de grens met Belize. En aangezien we toch op weg waren, hebben we onszelf gelijk maar even getrakteerd op een inkijkje bij de buren. Ook geen straf! ð§ð¿ We verruilden het warme Flores voor het historische Antigua. Een schattig stadje uit de Spaanse tijd dat lang als hoofdstad heeft gediend. Het is de uitvalsbasis voor een fantastisch avontuur: de Acantenango beklimmen. Alles behalve een 'walk in the park', maar als je na 1700 meter klimmen dan eindelijk op de top staat en de Fuego naast je lava ziet spuwen, is alle ellende vergeten. Nog zoiets dat gewoon thuis hoort op elke bucketlist! ð€© Guatemala is een groot land en er valt nog veel meer te ontdekken. Ik ben benieuwd wat er te vinden is zodra je de toeristische trekpleisters achter je laat. Voor nu hebben we wel even genoeg gezien en zijn we blij het land weer achter ons te laten. De veramerikanisering en het flinke toeristische gehalte maakt dat we toch wat minder enthousiast zijn over het land. Geef mij maar El Salvador ð Maar dat er toffe dingen te vinden zijn, is wel een ding dat zeker is!

Ons volgende land is er een waarvan we absoluut niet hadden gedacht er te komen deze reis: El Salvador ðžð» Een goed voorbeeld over wat beeldvorming voor impact heeft en de eenzijdigheid ervan. Nou is het ook niet de beste reclame om de 'murder capital of the world' te hebben, maar verassing...het is ook een land met mooie natuur, lekker eten en wederom lieve mensen die ook maar gewoon hun leven leven. Het is er vast een stuk beter op geworden nu vrijwel alle bendeleden achter de tralies zitten (bijna zeventigduizend man opgepakt en veroordeeld in een half jaar tijd - ik vind het lef hebben en flink aanpoten!), maar toch confronteert het jezelf weer eens met de vooroordelen die je hebt en de (vaak) ongegronde angst die ons van zoveel mooie avonturen weerhoudt. El Salvador is half zo groot als Nederland en staat vol met (actieve) vulkanen en Maya ruïnes ð€© we worden al gelijk positief verrast als we de eerste nacht aan het enorme kratermeer van de Ilopagno vulkaan slapen. Deze barste ooit drie maanden lang uit, legde een gebied van tienduizend vierkante kilometer in as en deed het klimaat in Noord Amerika afkoelen. We rijden door kleine dorpjes en landbouwgebied langs diverse Maya ruïnes, eten ons rond aan pupusas, slapen in het super schattige Suchitoto, bewonderen prachtige meren en beklimmen de vulkaan Santa Ana voor een spectaculair uitzicht. We zijn er amper of we gaan alweer door naar het volgende land. Iets dat we normaal niet zo snel doen, maar nu toevallig zo uit kwam. Maar we vertrekken niet voor we aan de kust hebben geslapen. We nemen afscheid van het land in het hippie-achtige El Zonte, waar het strand zwart is, de zonsondergang een plaatje, men de golven maar wat graag trotseert op een surfboard en waar je bij laag water prachtige grotten kunt bezoeken. Het was een grote verassing en we zijn zo blij dat we hier toch beland zijn! Ik had de pupusas, lieve straathonden, bijzondere ruïnes en prachtige uitzichten voor geen goud willen missen. Toerisme voert (nog) niet de boventoon in dit land en dat maakt het een rauwe en pure ervaring. Hier vind je niks anders dan de realiteit, omgeven door prachtige pareltjes.
