True Detective è un titolo che, grazie alla sua prima stagione, si è subito guadagnato la nomea di instant classic. Le stagioni successive - con protagonisti e storie diverse - non sono riuscite a mantenere le aspettative, seppur io trovi decisamente bella anche la terza stagione, e poco riuscita ma gradevole la seconda. Questa quarta stagione tende come tematiche alla prima stagione, riuscendo a conquistare i cuori dei fan di vecchia data. L'ambientazione alienante, e il caso dalle tinte sovrannaturali, sono di sicuro impatto, e la cura HBO nella realizzazione è sempre ottima. Personalmente, però, sono una voce fuori dal coro, perché sono rimasto poco entusiasta dalla visione di Night Country. A livello soggettivo ho trovato la protagonista un dito in culo, bravissima Jodie Foster, ma non sopportavo a schermo il suo personaggio, ed essendo lei la protagonista, per me non è stato facile appassionarmi. A livello oggettivo ho notato la presenza di diverse trame, che spesso portavano a nulla, o con evidenti buchi di trama - qualcuno mi spieghi il mistero della lingua. Il finale ha rappresentato un bel colpo di scena, coerente con quanto visto, ma è stato nascosto da tante altre cose lasciate in sospeso. Io non sono uno spettatore che vuole che tutto sia spiegato per filo e per segno, va bene usare un po' di intuito e deduzione, se non proprio lasciare la libera interpretazione, ma in store simili è bello quando tutti i pezzi si incastrano alla perfezione con poco di non spiegato. Good, clever, thrilling, thought provoking drama. I’ve had the pleasure of catching up with some “good” TV series lately, amongst the moving wallpaper, stuff that makes me tick and gets me thinking. Top of the pick is @hbo s True Detectives: Night Country, a gritty murder slash ghost story set in the fictional town of Ennis Alaska. It’s the kind of atmospheric, cinematic, dark-humour laced story I love and the combination of hostile environment, ancient Inuit legend, creepy psychological horror and gripping action is JUST like the stuff I like to write. Scientists killed by paranormal forces in an isolated arctic outpost anyone? There’s also a vein of hard ass feminism (you truly wouldn’t want to mess with Jodie Foster as Detective Liz Denvers) and the back stories, power plays and character development are excellent - as is the unexpected feminist conclusion. Secondly (and very late to the party) is HBO’s 2016 season 1 of Westworld (based on Michael Crichton’s 1979 movie of the same name) written by Lisa Joy and Jonothan Nolon, it examines the sanctity (or not) of human life and humanness in an immersive real life WildWest theme world populated by genetically/robotically created “hosts.” Again, big questions and big emotions as sentience begins to arise amongst the robots and the plot is full of twists and reversals- moving to a gripping inversion of expectations and shocking conclusions. It really throws ethics and the issue of who’s an antagonist and who’s a protagonist in the air. The performances are exceptional - Evan Rachel Wood as Dolores is magnificent - and the amazing special effects don’t steal the show from either the story or the actors. Its a gory tour de force and a thought provoking examination of human behaviour. And it’s very clear from watching the DVD box set documentary extras that *everyone* involved in the project was passionate about making the project a perfect work of story and art. TRUE DETECTIVES – NIGHT COUNTRY – HBO - anmeldt på baggrund af hele sæsonen. True Detectives er en såkaldt antologiserie, hvor hver sæson er en afsluttet fortælling i sig selv. Jeg har tidligere anmeldt sæson 1, der i min optik er en af de bedste krimiserier til dato, mens sæson 2 og 3 ikke er værd at bruge tid på. Night Country er fjerde sæson af True Detectives, og heldigvis er der nu igen tale om en seværdig oplevelse. Sæsonen foregår i den fiktive by Ennis i iskolde Alaska, hvor vintersolen lige er gået ned og har henlagt byen i en ugelang tilstand af mørke. Vi følger det lokale politis efterforskning, da 8 mænd fra en nærliggende forskningsstation findes nøgne og frosne i isen. True Detectives har altid store stjerner med på rollelisten, og denne sæson er ingen undtagelse, da Jodie Foster spiller hovedrollen som detektiv Liz Danvers. Sæsonen er spændende og leger mere med mystik, gys og det overnaturlige end de tidligere sæsoner gjorde. Eneste minus i regningen er, at sæsonen – ligesom så mange andre krimiserie – ikke nødvendigvis får givet et tilfredstillende svar på alle de spørgsmål, som rejses gennem fortællingen. Ikke desto mindre så var jeg godt underholdt af Night Country, og jeg syntes også, at finalen var solid.
