Something I really picked up on last year was not the *pressure* people feel to be attractive because of platforms like these & mass media (I was already actuely aware of that). But rather the way we *think* of attractiveness & in turn, our unhealthy relationship to it. As if attractiveness is *obviously* something we all desire, therefore most of us strive for via make-up, shaving, fake tan, muscles, skin fades, tattoos, hair-dye, diet products, extensions, nice clothes, the list is endless. Yet it seemed no one had considered the alternative: Just. Being. Ugly. ("Ugly" is a word I typically avoid as ugliness is completely subjective, but I'm using it here to illustrate my point). I had this thought upon listening to a podcast, where the guest explained she had gone through some physical changes that had altered her appearance in a "negative" way & that because of this, her mum would make her look in the mirror each day & tell herself she was pretty to help build her self-esteem; something I absolutely see the value & kind-heartedness in. However, it also left me thinking - "You know you don't *have* to be attractive, right? You know you can just be ugly & that's OK?". And I guess that's the message I'm trying to convey here: That the *point* of a human being isn't to be attractive. That you *can* just exist as you regardless of what you look like. That you *don't* have to put in any effort to make yourself "more attractive". I see this most in my niece. As a two & a half year old she has no concept of looking attractive or that her body exists for anything other than movement & to be a home. It doesn't matter if her hair's a "mess" or she has food on her face. And why would it? One thing that has consistently been considered ‘ugly’ is being a front-bencher nerd. Mainstream media looks down upon conforming and following dress codes. The nerdy students are underconfident and almost invisible, hence, struggle to step out of their comfort zone. This editorial retells this problematic narrative. Here, the nerd is the hero of the story, dressed the way she’s usually dressed and doing everything she normally does, just in an extravagant, loud and unapologetic fashion. The shoot has a satirical theme and mocks the ridiculous norm of labelling people ugly solely based on their appearance. The visuals have a pop art-esque maximalist aesthetic. The model is styled in regular school uniform, but in contrasting prints, to signify that a nerd can follow rules and still make a statement. I have played a little and am terrible at painting with crayons but I realized that the child in me had to be let loose a little. And I fell in love with this painting. As ironic as it may seem,as a recent immigrant from lebanon, and a descendant of Armenian genocide survivors,i have had enough of RESILIENCE, wanting to shout out loud about grieve and vulnerability ..yet when this piece came out from the 2nd firing, cracked open from up to bottom, i sat down and patched it with layers and layers of orange matte self empathy, tones of blue cobalt armor of protection , lot of burnt red love and a generous amount of spring green eternal rebirth from inside… it came out of the 3rd firing,beautiful inside out ,recovered from its wound,with a radiant gown..as brand new, showing that Vulnerability and Resilience can go hand in hand.. This BEAUTY! I know Hyenas don’t have fans out there in this big beautiful world. I however am a Hyena fan. Yes can they be bullies, yep definitely. However they can also be great mothers, siblings brothers and sisters. They also play a pivotal part in keeping the environment they live in being both a predator and scavenger this helps aid in keeping other animals clean, healthy and disease free. So bully or not they know their role and they play it well. They also tend to have some BIG personalities and well that always makes for an interesting photos. Some about their eyes, when they look at you it’s as if they are looking at who you are. Judging you… predators definitely judge when they look at you. Are you food, danger, sick enough for they to pick off…. Or maybe it’s just that khaki is definitely not my color 😂 Either way Hyenas you are BEAUTIFUL and I luv ya. 🫒er 🌳Oliver Tree Concert: Alone in a Crowd Tour 🫒er 🌳 Another full circle moment 😁 Even though the crowd was kinda rude at times, I loved the concert! Oliver Tree delivered exactly what he said he would. The performance was literally a concert, tv show, movie, and a play all in one. Very silly and theatrical too. I'm so glad I was able to see another one of my favorite artists live again. It was well worth the wait 🙌🏾 Also the first picture was before the concert and the second one was after.
