Switching from plastic to paper seems like a straightforward win for the environment, right? Not so fast! Using paper for packaging only creates more pressure on forests. The number is staggering. Demand for paper packaging drives about a tenth of total logging pressure on the world’s forest, amounting to an estimated 3.1 billion trees cut down annually. We need real solutions. Hundreds of millions of tonnes of low-carbon Next Gen materials are burned or landfilled every year. Why waste waste? Wheat straw, hemp, and recycled paper are great alternatives to replace tree-based paper and plastic, taking pressure off forests—one of the most effective and actively operational carbon capture technologies on the planet. There was a clean up, a colouring contest for kids, an informative talk by Dr. Zaleha of UIA (and MNS) on horseshoe crabs (an endangered species in the East Coast) and a free health screening for the locals. We joined the beach/river clean up. The amount of single use plastic and polystyrene collected was absolutely mind boggling! This was a reminder to all present to cut down the use of such single use items. Opt for REUSABLE food containers and bottles/tumblers. REFUSE single use plastic and polystyrene for your health and the health of the environment. The students of UIA segregated the trash collected (unfortunately, none of the trash collected was in the condition required to be recycled and would therefore be sent to the landfill). 💙 INC-4 (the fourth meeting to discuss the Global Plastics Treaty) is currently happening in Ottawa, Canada. Plastic is flooding our world – and having a devastating impact on our oceans, wildlife and human health. This treaty is our chance to finally fix this! 💪 But, for it to be effective we need it to: 1. Reduce plastic production. 2. Prioritise reuse. 3. Deal with concerning chemicals. 4. 🌍 Le Comité de Négociation Intergouvernemental (INC) continue à Ottawa, Canada, pour les 4è négociation pour un Traité Mondial sur le plastique, du 23 au 29 avril 2024 . L'INC-4 marque une étape cruciale dans la quête d'un traité mondial pour mettre fin à la marée de plastique qui nous menace. 💡L'objectif ? Finaliser un traité juridiquement contraignant d'ici la fin de cette année. Mais la route à parcourir est semée d'embûches. À Nairobi en novembre dernier lors de l’INC3, les progrès ont été timides. Maintenant, à Ottawa, les enjeux sont encore plus grands. Les négociateurs sont sous pression pour rédiger un accord plus solide afin de lutter contre les 460 millions de tonnes de pollution plastique générées annuellement. 🤝 Forces Opposées : Deux camps émergent dans ces négociations : la coalition "haute ambition", poussant pour des objectifs ambitieux visant à mettre fin à la pollution plastique d'ici 2040 ; et la coalition "durabilité", plaidant en faveur de mesures plus souples pour protéger leurs industries pétrochimiques. ⚠️ La pollution plastique nécessite une action urgente. Notre projet MicroPow a déjà prouvé l’existence d’une maladie due au plastique : la plasticose. Maintenant, le projet Synsen, suite du projet MicroPow va modéliser les effets de l’ingestion de microplastiques sur le vieillissement cellulaire et les maladies neurodégénératives. Contrairement à ce que l’on pourrait penser, sensibiliser n’est pas seulement informer, ni enseigner. Sensibiliser ce n’est pas non plus dire ce qu’il faut faire ou ne pas faire. Avant toute chose, sensibiliser c’est rendre sensible, et cela passe par faire appel aux émotions de chacun. C’est pourquoi quand nous faisons de la sensibilisation, nous partageons également notre propre sensibilité sur l’impact du plastique en milieu océanique et sur la protection de l’océan plus largement pour éveiller cette sensibilité chez d’autres. Le mot émotion vient du latin movere qui signifie « mettre en mouvement », et c’est précisément le but de notre sensibilisation : mettre les gens en mouvement pour protéger l’océan. Nous partageons également de l’information factuelle pour aider à mieux comprendre l’importance de l’océan dans nos écosystèmes, parce que “nous protégeons ce que nous aimons, et nous aimons ce que nous comprenons” comme le disait si bien le commandant Cousteau. Sensibiliser ça peut se faire partout, à n’importe quel moment, de plein de manières différentes, du moment que nous pouvons enclencher un échange. UNEP: INC-4 Meeting Ottawa, Canada, April 23-29th, 2024 Bridgers Association is joining its counterparts and other stakeholders worldwide who on the invitation of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) have converged on Ottawa, Canada for the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-4) to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. While discussions continue at the Shaw Center, it is expected that this fourth session will push negotiations further with the ambition of completing its work with a global binding treaty by the end of 2024.
