We are excited to be displaying Tony Davis’s revealing documentary-style photography that sheds a light on the British rave scene, at Candid Arts Gallery, which will open on 30th March (6pm-11pm). Photographer Tony Davis grew up on Nottingham’s Clifton Estate during the 1960s/1970s. After picking up his camera and documenting his home city of Nottingham, Tony was offered a place on the prestigious documentary photography course in Newport, South Wales. Tony is well known for capturing the spirit of the 90s rave scene around the Midlands in the UK, documenting legendary nights at much loved venues during a magical time of rave culture. Huw Jordan Tatlock is a writer and folklorist based in The Lake District and Eryri. With a focus on the intersection of environment and myth, Huw’s writing aims to reestablish the connections between the stories that have shaped us and the landscapes that surround us. A strong believer in the grounding power of traditional storytelling, Huw also frequently uses his work in outdoor leadership as a platform to educate others on the transformative power of lost British folklore. Warlords. Conquerors. Slayers-of-dragons. For hundreds of years, legends have represented masculinity as a source of violence. Before the emergence of the warrior archetype, masculinity was present in myth in a far different light. Male heroes like Prometheus, Orpheus, Merlin-Emrys, Fionnghal mac Cumhail and Tristan of Cornwall were tricksters, wizards, wise-men and poets. Javier Enrique is a Boricua interdisciplinary artist, journalist, and writer based in NYC and the Caribbean, currently focusing on photography, text, and installation. His work explores cultural amnesia and reflective narratives about religious fanaticism, machismo, and colonial culture. He received his master’s degree in public relations from NYU. Javier focuses on exploring the storytelling element of photography. His work is brimming with turbulent emotion, creating a simultaneously melancholy and intimate picture. We are delighted to showcase Reza Bahmani’s paintings who expressed interest in the show’s pertinent topic. Reza was born in 1984 in Tehran, Iran. He started off his career as a cartoonist in Gol Agha satire magazine in 2000. He then received his Bachelors in Graphic Design from Azad University of Tehran in 2002 and his Masters from Sooreh Art College in 2006. Reza started his animation work by character, space, and concept creation and made short animations which were featured in domestic and international film festivals. He has also worked as an artistic director for various media and video game companies. Since 2012, he has been teaching character design, illustration and painting at Azad University and Sooreh College. In Gianna’s own words: “I am a London-based multidisciplinary artist working across video, performance, painting, photography and more. Since I moved to London, I go by the name of Gianna T. If there is anything that fuels my artistic craft, persuading me to constantly reinvent myself through different mediums and forms of self-expression, that must be life: nothing influences me and my creative production more than what I get to experience daily, whether it be human interactions, personal observations or unexpected awakening. I look at art as a means of nurturing and preserving curiosity and wonder in my life experiences, finding inspiration in anyone and anything I come in contact with. Among the others, I am also the co-founder of Voodoo 4U; a community- based, independent fashion brand I creative direct in collaboration with my partner Matilde Borgherini with a focus on the upcycling of second-hand clothing. In my work, I look at the different mediums that compose my creative practice as deeply interconnected. When I perform, my body interacts and harasses the surface of my canvases, becoming one with it in engaging, highly ironic choreographies where opposite forces and emotions – love and violence, life and grief, oneness and loneliness – coexist. Looking forward to exhibiting award-winning Allan Jenkins insightful ‘Sketches of Cuba’ series at Candid Arts Gallery, which will open on 30th March (5pm-11pm). Allan Jenkins (born 1969 ) is a fine Art Photographer born in Wales, raised in Catalunya (Spain), educated in Madrid, Tarragona and Yorkshire, and finally in London where he’s been living since 1993. He is best known for his hand printed images of Still life, figurative work and Portraiture. He combines his interests in people’s identities with his fine Art background, to create a wide range of travel documentary images as well as working at his studio in London on more traditional portrait sittings , still life setups and vintage alternative printing techniques. Allan Jenkins has been taking photographs in Cuba since 1995, in his six trips to the Caribbean Island he has produced this insightful series of portraits which capture a unique and personal vision of the Cuban people and their environment. By focusing on different social groups, Allan evokes unseen aspects of this fascinating society that we know so little about and its people. In Sebastians own words: “After dropping my A-Levels, I fell into the world of Tv and film. This led me to Manchester Film School in 2019, where I learnt, developed, and ended up specializing within the camera department. Since, I have been involved in award winning shorts and features ranging in roles from Camera Trainee up to 1st Assistant Camera. Throughout this I always had an interest in photography. Taking my camera out and plugging in a podcast became a regular hobby, and I often found myself on the streets of Manchester searching for moments to capture.
