During the Summer of 1998, photographer Mischa Haller travelled across the UK to chronicle clubbers and partygoers spilling out onto the streets in the small hours of the morning. The idea was to show what it felt like to be young and up all night in that slightly woozy, surreal state. Misha: “I was interested in the time between the nightclub closing and people going home, those one or two hours when the rest of the world is asleep, but clubbers are carrying on. From the series ‘Still Stompingʼ by @jeaniejeanphotos Jeanie: “Growing up in the ‘90s, I was brought up as a psychedelic mod by my Father, who introduced me to 60’s garage rock music, which eventually led me down the path of punk. “One evening, nestled in the cosy Rio Cinema at one of Rebel Reel Cine Club’s showings, Elaine Constantine‘s Northern Soul burst onto the screen. I became mesmerised and hypnotised by what I saw. When I got home, I immediately prepared my cameras and researched organisations that are part of the current Northern Soul scene in London and outside the city, and I’ve never looked back. “I’m known for documenting the current punk and goth scenes, but I’m now heavily involved with Northern Soul, It’s part of my life. Documenting the nights has become truly addictive. It’s beautiful to see people of all ages, from the Wigan Casino era to Gen Z’ers, united and completely absorbed in soul. Our world is flooded with misrepresentation and fake news so I wanted to create a body of work which reflects the real and honest experiences of children, and young people, during the covid lockdowns. What were children doing during the lockdowns? It varied from home to home, region to region and between countries. Everyone had a different story to tell. I enjoyed the slower pace of life and being able to watch my children learn and discover new things. However, monotony and frustration did creep in as homeschooling in the UK began approaching 4 months. Trying to navigate the curriculum for 2 different age ranges was intense. It was all so hard for children, parents and carers worldwide. Some people were experiencing very cramped conditions, locked away in small flats with no gardens, or having to be in isolation with their abusers. The complexity of some people’s lives became intensely suffocating. I wanted to produce a collection which embodied the reality of people’s lives so i began collating a series of images from around the world.
