Garden and mango update! We have lemon blossoms coming up and strawberries ripening. There’s only 1 strawberry plant so I don’t expect to get many berries until I propogate some of the runners. We have eggplants, peppers and tomatoes coming soon! The mangoes are getting really big and we are really excited to try them! We also have some rosemary, mint and culantro (not pictured) that’s looking pretty happy. It’s a bit hot for the mint so there aren’t as many leaves as I would like to see. The houseplants are happy too! Look at the newest leaf on my Thai Constellation. 🥰 I have a raspberry plant that’s ready to be potted so I hope to do that this week. I have terrible luck with berries so I hope these pan out! My first GreenStalk Garden vertical stacker is complete and positioned to receive full sunlight. For this vertical stacker, I chose crimson-red geranium as the dominant color and multicolored Violas as a secondary color. I planted it in a staggered pattern. Monday blooms to brighten your day! I had planned on planting out the garden this weekend, but such as spring temperatures will do, they change from moment to moment. Last week, highs and lows look perfect, now we’ve got a couple nights that are too close to freezing. Im not willing to chance it. The single late tulips, also known as May tulips or French singles, are all in full bloom now. (Several days early just like the whole season, which also seems to be running early this year). The arrival of my three favorite French singles, Dordgone’, ‘Menton’ and ‘Camargue’ - all named for towns in France- swing the color palette in the tulips beds towards sherbet shades of pink, apricot, and yellow. In a few days, the background color in ‘Camargue’ tulips (the ones with two tone splashes in Picture Three) will turn from yellow to white, completing the flower’s transformation into a white flower with pink splashes. 🇩🇪⬇️ I presowed and soaked lots of seeds yesterday. Beans, corn, cucumbers, zucchini and squash. I felt a bit manic doing it, because I started so many seeds. But with 4 gardens you need a lot. 😂🤷🏻♀️🙈 🇩🇪 Gestern ist es hier jetzt wirklich eskaliert! Dagegen waren meine Tomatensessions gar nichts!🙈 Ich habe ganz viele Bohnen und Mais eingeweicht (nur für 12 h) und jede Menge Gurken, Kürbisse und Zucchini gesät. Ich glaube das letzte Mal, dass ich so eskaliert bin war vor 7 Jahren, als wir unser Paradies das erste Jahr hatten. Da hatte ich noch nicht so ein Gespür für die Mengen. Das Paradies haben wir ja schon seit 2 Jahren nicht mehr, dafür gärtnere ich nun in 4 Gärten. Da kommt auch eine ganze Menge zusammen. Jetzt heißt es nur noch den Überblick zu behalten. 😂 Ist es bei euch auch schon eskaliert, oder beherrscht ihr euch? Aber was gibt es Schöneres, als bei der Aussaat zu eskalieren??? Garden got some fertilizer and a deep watering today.
Gravel paths have been a game changer in my garden. Here are the before and after shots of my recent garden reno/tidy up. I used to have wood shavings on my paths but after rain they would get sludgy and boggy from the clay soil beneath. It was always a dirty muddy mess collecting eggs from the chicken coop after rain. So I decided to replace the old decayed timber garden edging with new timber sleepers and put down a heavy layer of pea gravel. This meant digging and levelling out the paths, and putting any soil into the adjacent garden beds. I decided to go with a barrier of geofabric before laying the gravel to keep the gravel from sinking into the clay over time. I'm so pleased with the results. No more filthy feet after rain now. So if they throw another el Nino weather pattern at us again, this time I'll be ready! P.S. My basil seedlings were very ready to transplant them to a larger growing pot, so that’s what I did today. I chose to plant four seedlings together in one pot. When the temperature outside is warm enough, I plant them outside in the garden also in clusters of four plants. I thought by then, this will safe some work and time. The change in season is really starting to be felt over the last two weeks. Dahlias are blowing their centres to expose their pollen for the bees, in a last minute attempt to create seed before winter and ultimate die back sets in. Mildew has also started to take over, and the plants are looking tired and ready to hibernate - I can start to sympathise too as the close of my season arrives 😉. But alas, there is no rest for me with a mass of weeding, bed prep, transplanting and seedling planting forecast for the next few weeks, whilst I wait for the dahlias to completely die back for the big annual dig and divide in about 6 weeks time. Strangely, it is a time I enjoy - pulling out the old crops to make room for the new. Stripping everything back to its bare bones again and dreaming of next season. Yellow passionfruit also known as guavadilla is a perfect vine to grow in frost free, warm climates. It can become invasive so keep it under control. They contain good amounts of dietary fibre, protein, calcium,iron, magnesium, zinc, beta carotene, phosphorus and vitamins a, b and c. Plant in well drained, composted soil in a sunny position, have some sort of trellis or fence on which it can climb and prune well after fruiting. Eat fresh, make into a cordial or passionfruit curd or delicious Orange and Passionfruit Marmalade. Did you know that passionflower tea can be used to reduce anxiety and help with insomnia ? 🪴𝓢𝓮𝓪𝓼𝓸𝓷 𝓸𝓹𝓮𝓷𝓲𝓷𝓰🪴 Gestern durften meine Olivenbäume und diverse andere Pflanzen, wie Oleander, Agapanthus, Dipladenie und Hängepelargonien aus ihrem Winterquartier ausziehen. Ich habe die Terrasse von Herbst- und Winterdreck und die Pflanzen von vertrockneten Zweigen und Blättern befreit. Im Wintergarten habe ich gleich auch noch ein bisschen aufgeräumt. Somit ist die Gartensaison eröffnet, und auf Wunsch einer kleinen Dame haben wir mit der Familie auch gleich noch angegrillt. Ich hoffe inständig, dass die Temperaturen bei Anfang bis Mitte 20 Grad bleiben, denn schon die 21°C gestern fühlten sich an wie 27°C und mehr vertrage ich nicht. Angeblich (lt. Meteorologen) ist die üble Dürreperiode der letzten Jahre vorbei, aber das glaube ich auch erst, wenn ich es sehe. Sie eure Pflanzen schon nach draußen umgezogen? The first garden job I wanted to do past visitor season was a harvest! What a beautiful day. Hot morning and then a divine 3 hour thunder storm with a little rain and then back to sunshine. The most perfect day. This is why I love autumn so much! The visitors seeing this asked where this all was in the garden. At a glance no one would realise this is all between shrubs and flowers and that’s the joy of a permaculture garden. Harvests feel like foraging I must admit there’s often burnt food when I run out to go get herbs whilst cooking. Sometimes I get lost and an hour disappears with distraction 😂 a bit of gardening, watching birds and hand picking bugs. But most of all the peace felt in the space which always charges my energy levels. I’m like the energiser bunny when I get back inside! I’ll post these baskets separately this week to explain what’s been harvested.
