Yuge spinach leaves! My thumb in the bottom right corner for comparison. This plant is a volunteer that popped up last fall and lasted all winter, through plenty of snow and temps into the mid teens. It is now the biggest spinach we’ve ever grown! A few other things we’ve learned overwinter well: Fava beans, sorrel and lots of lettuce varieties. This fall I’ll be planting out more things to see what else thrives this way. This is our third summer in 7b and we’re still learning our new zone. After living in 9b my whole life, this is such a fun, new challenge! The wildfire spread of stinknet (Oncosiphon pilulifer) across the Arizona desert in the last decade in particular has been unfortunately facilitated by the nursery trade. Which I'm part of, so I'm not particularly criticizing anyone here. The tiny seeds end up in nursery pots as freeloaders, which are then sold to brand new locations that have no infestation in all likelihood. . The plants may be allowed to flower and produce seed in the new owner's garden because frankly they look sort of cute and innocuous. But people are unaware of how dangerously reproductive this plant is, and if you let even one plant go to seed you will likely have dozens to hundreds next year. And then the year after that you will likely have thousands and the problem will probably be beyond your control. It's the very definition of exponential population growth. This is why it is so important to recognize this invader and control it immediately, never allowing a population to get going in your yard or your neighborhood for that matter. . I have never allowed stinknet to reproduce successfully in my garden and yet I am somehow pulling several dozen plants per year out of both nursery pots and the ground adjacent to them. If you get the weeds in their vegetative state or early flowering phases, you can successfully interrupt their reproduction. I throw the plants in the garbage rather than putting them into compost piles or just letting them dehydrate on the ground because I don't trust it or its seeds to die or become inviable once flower heads have appeared. Total removal is the best answer with small populations. . ✨🍅Tomato Babies🍅✨ I am so happy that my spring/summer garden is doing so well, especially after my fall/winter garden was a bit of a flop last year. I definitely planted densely this year, but I’m finding that with ongoing pruning to manage good airflow I am not seeing any unmanageable fungal infections or symptoms of generally unhealthy plants. I’ve also been making an extra effort to be very consistent in the watering schedule to hopefully avoid blossom end rot. I planted a whole new batch of Mirabilis multiflora (Colorado Four O’clock) seeds this morning, hoping for a successful crop this Summer! This is one of my favorite arid land ground covers, it blossoms and thrives in both Spring and Fall, storing water in an underground tuber, dying back in the cold of winter and waking up in early Spring. The flowers open early in the evening, supporting pollinators like bees and sphinx moths before closing up again in the late morning as the sun moves towards its zenith. They help increase the organic matter of your soil while simultaneously cooling it, acting as a living mulch. My classes are held at Berridge Nursery in Phoenix and we will enjoy the cool temps of the greenhouse for both summer classes!
