(5/5) The pièce de résistance of my Arabian Nights collection is this 1928 volume illustrated by Virginia Frances Sterrett, edited by Hildegarde Hawthorne. I’m gagged, as the kids say! The volume is not in the best shape, but good condition copies can be worth around $1000 (reissued copies about $20 😘). You can definitely see the deco influence, plus a lot of Chinese and even some Southeast Asian influence in the headdress of the lady sitting in the tree. Formou-se com bolsa de estudos no Instituto de Arte de Chicago; durante os estudos ela já trabalhava em uma agência de propaganda de arte. Aos 19 foi diagnosticada com tuberculose e passou a trabalhar na ilustração de contos de fadas franceses escritos por Comtesse de Ségur (1799-1874), uma russa nacionalizada francesa. For those of you who celebrate, how's this for a festive tree? Virginia Frances Sterrett was an American artist and illustrator who was born in Chicago. She is best known for her illustrations for a version of 'Arabian Nights' that was published in 1928. This piece was created for a publication called 'Old French Fairy Tales' in 1920. "Her achievement was beauty, a delicate, fantastic beauty, created with brush and pencil. Almost unschooled in art, her life spent in prosaic places of the West and Middle West, she made pictures of haunting loveliness, suggesting Oriental lands she never saw and magical realms no one ever knew except in the dreams of childhood … Perhaps it was the hardships of her own life that gave the young artist’s work its fanciful quality. Mi sono fatta un regalo♥️ Mi sono voluta vedere in un’immaginario a me caro e adorato, in un’epoca che ha creato le correnti artistiche che preferisco, e ho trovato l’unica artista in grado di farlo: @cunene Quando per caso ho incontrato la sua pagina ho fatto un salto, ho visto delle fotografie che avevano nella stragrande maggioranza dei casi atmosfere che richiamavano le mie passioni e lo stile che amo. Some cute 1920s Fairies inspired by Chicago born artist Virginia Frances Sterrett ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Virginias artwork has been engrained into my mind since the first time I’ve ever experienced her work. Born in 1900 in Chicago, Sterret had always been interested in art. By the age of 15 she was accepted into an art highschool where she would continue to work in isolation. At the age of 18 she got a scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago . Unfortunately just a year later she was forced to drop out to take care of her ailing mother and provide for her siblings. In 1920 Virginia got her first commission, and she was finally able to publish her art work in Penn Publishing Companies “ Old French Fairy Tales .“ During this time though, she has also contracted tuberculosis. From the years of 1920-31 she suffered with this disease that ultimately lead to her passing. Also during this time she published her art in the book “Tanglewood Tales”. She may have only lived to 30, but the impact that Virginia Frances Sterret’s work made during those few short years was immense. En alguno echo de menos más ilustraciones, pero en general me gusta la edición. Están basados en ediciones de la época victoriana con ilustradores tales como Edmund Dulac, Warwick Goble, Kay Nielsen, Harry Clark, etc. ¡En el de La Sirenita está mi cuento preferido! ¡El Compañero de viaje! Por cierto, hablando del contenido, si alguien quiere saber exactamente qué cuentos o qué ilustrador es el de algún libro preguntadme, al menos por los que yo tengo, que os contesto sin problemas, ya que la editorial no se ha mostrado muy "receptiva". Originally published in 1852, the book was an attempt by the celebrated novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne — author of The Scarlet Letter (1850) and The House of the Seven Gables (1851) — to turn the Greek myths into something entertaining and edifying to young readers. I was a bit nervous to open this package — my 3rd and final collected book illustrated by Virginia Frances Sterrett — a 1st edition (!) of 1928’s Arabian Nights, her masterpiece and final commission before succumbing to tuberculosis in 1931. An incredible talent lost much too soon. My copy of 1920’s Old French Fairy Tales is a cheaper version printed without two of the color plates (I think), and my copy of 1921’s Tanglewood Tales is a hardcover Calla Edition from 2012.

VIRGINIA FRANCES STERRETT (1900-1931). Virginia Sterrett fue una ilustradora estadounidense. Su primer encargo como artista lo recibió a los 19 años para ilustrar "Old French Fairy Tales" (1920), una colección de obras de la autora francesa del siglo XIX Comtesse de Ségur. Desde 1923, con problemas de salud (tuberculosis), Sterrett pudo trabajar en proyectos sólo por períodos cortos de tiempo y como resultado, pudo completar una obra más antes de morir: su propia interpretación de "Arabian Nights" (1928). Tres años después, en 1931, fallecía a causa de la tuberculosis. Los tres libros que ilustró Virginia fueron publicados por "Penn Publishing Company". Eran libros de gran formato, con historias simples y diseñados para el público infantil. The exquisite set of illustrations were Chicago-born Sterrett’s first ever commission, taken on at the tender age of 19. Shortly after completing them she was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Sterrett would manage a few other commissions, including illustrations for a 1928 edition of Arabian Nights, but her failing health meant she could only work in short bursts.
