Today, a puzzler. Autobiography of #ArthurAshe called #OffTheCourt. From a library book sale - $5 to fill a bag. It remains a gamble. And one maybe I've lost. But it was too intriguing to pass on. I almost didn't pick it up; the old #bargainbin #BarnesAndNoble price tag hints inauspiciously: little of value found here. In its favor - #firstedition #firstprint. But then... Inside, an #autograph. The question remains, whose? Arthur Ashe's known signatures have considerable variation, but this... ...doesn't conform well to any that I've seen. Particularly telling of an obvious forgery would seem to be at least four or five aspects: That Arthur wasn't known to write a cursive "B" like that, that his most common send-off for an inscription was tersely, "Peace," that it was rare for him to miss the "e" at the end of his last name, and that he tended to sign the title pages (not the front end papers, as here), and it would be, "Arthur Ashe," not what appears the *quite unusual choice* "Brother Ash" shown here. Still, who makes a forgery *this obvious?* This is either a complete ignoramus with no knowledge nor intent of making it resemble an authentic Ashe signature (even missing a letter on the man's surname, yet somehow has the audacity to insert the personal, "Brother" instead of his given name), or... ...it was the autograph of a very ill man -- which Ashe would be. Possibly suffering pain & issues w/ articulation in joints, finding a less strenuous way to make a letter "B," the strain of legibility marking his handwriting with stiffness, resulting in blots, rigidity of line, and failure to manage a discernible "g" to end "Everything," much as is lost the "e" in "Ashe." Too much effort at the end, perhaps. #AIDS, like many terminal illnesses, will exhaust, lead you to neglect details of penmanship, centering, or on what page one customarily signs, even if for a dear one personally "Brother," who may have picked up a 1981 book from the bargain bin a decade later for an icon to sign. Bc they'd know it was the last time they'd see them. I don't know, but I wonder. And I can imagine both equally. And so, I can't let this one go before I find out. #book #books

the regulators by stephen king; i have so many stephen king books to post but i need to get this one off my chest before the others, since i find bachman books extremely interesting in and of themselves. this is the second bachman book i read, and at first i really didn’t enjoy it. it was over-complicated with so many characters, and the storyline wasn’t really moving anywhere. however, as the story went on, i began to see what king was aiming to achieve with this - an intensely claustrophobic town with tightly knitted characters whom you become attached to, just for them to be k!lled off in a mere few pages’ time. it seemed to me to be an experiment for a different type of horror; i think this is why he wrote it under the bachman pseudonym. it was a horrifying read, with characters from a tv show named ‘the regulators’ coming to life and terrorising the town. the style of writing and the structure of the novel reminded me very much of ‘the mist’, it was equally as insistent on bringing an impending sense of doom to the reader. there were also some extremely graphic injuries from the beginning, spanning through the entire novel. it was a wonderful blend of sci-fi and body horror. it puts you straight into the worst of the action, with a lull only to serve as a time period for the characters to lose their collective mind before the next event falls upon their lives. there is no time to recover or to get to grips with what is happening. also, i find children absolutely terrifying in horror novels because of their loss of innocence when being faced with horrific entities or possession, and the little boy in this genuinely scarred me for life… he was absolutely petrifying. king definitely knows how to manipulate small things about characters in order to make them into the vessels he needs to pass the horror onto us. genius work 🖤 #reading #read #book #bookstagram #booktok #instagrambooks #author #reader #history #historian #bookpost #pages #escapism #escape #lovereading #firstedition #bookstore #bookshop #readingtime #stephenking #richardbachman #bachmanbook #theregulators #regulators #constantreader #stephenkingbooks #pseudonym #tvshow #movie #horror
An interesting association copy of Ralph Hewins’ Quisling, a biographical account of Norway’s wartime leader, Vidkun Quisling. Quisling conspired with the Nazis and, come the abdication of Norway’s King Haakon in 1940, helped to set up a puppet state, aiding Nazi war efforts and removing Norwegian Jews to concentration camps. Hewins’ biography is a noted one, since it is somewhat revisionist in style, and argues Quisling’s quiet nature and Norwegian patriotism muddles some of his collaborationist actions; he merely thought he could deal with the devil. The book received much criticism upon publication, especially within Norway. However, a clue to Hewins’ ideas may come with the inscription and ALS laid in. He writes to Whitney Straight—an air commodore for the RAF sent to Norway to help trace Haakon—vowing to “remove none of the material which Mr Whitney Straight has allowed me to see” and “will not quote or reproduce the material without the Straight’s permission”. Perhaps Straight’s first-hand account (and ‘material’) was the basis for Hewins’ controversial angle on Quisling? This is the first US edition (John Day, 1966) and is very good. Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz (Alfred Knopf, 1961) is an often overlooked piece of the Langston Hughes canon, though considered important due its novelty among his other works. This copy was owned by “The Godmother of African-American Poetry”, Naomi Madgett, who was a pupil of Hughes’ in her youth. The book contains her signature, as well as some light pencil marks.

On this day in 1901, Japan's Emperor Hirohito was born. He presided over wartime Japan, and urged his people to stop fighting after the dropping of two atomic bombs by the United States. With Japan on our minds, today's post showcases the first edition of first atlas of Japan to be printed in Japan, published in 1666. Atlas of Japan 日本分形圖, or Nihon zu 日本図 was most likely designed as a travel guide, with hand-coloured maps of 16 provinces and textual details on the distances between various landmarks, towns, castles, and countries across the sea. Roads and sea routes are outlined in red, with blue to indicate bodies of water. Different regions on the maps are hand-coloured in pink, yellow, and green, and circles and squares are coloured with white to indicate towns and districts. The atlas covers Aomori in the north to Tsushima in the south. Despite its focus on recording accurate distances and landmarks, the atlas reads like a journal. It is written in the first person, with the author recounting their impressions of the food, music, and people encountered along the journey. There are references to festivals, vacancy rates, ‘delicious’ restaurants, and ‘one of a kind’ places to visit. The author draws upon metaphors, comparing the south sea to a ‘crouching dragon’, and speaks of the fatigue and weariness of the journey across Japan. With its vibrant colour, lack of scale, red outlined routes, and literal recording of distances between destinations, this present atlas is fully steeped in the Gyoki tradition.
