About the Film Series: Edward Hopper grew up in Nyack, just across the river. He is a 20th century American realist artist who has influenced American art and artists for generations. Since this upcoming series focuses on Hopper-influenced films I thought it would be neat to enrich it by inviting Ms. Bennewitz who could educate us about Hopper. And maybe generate peoples’ interest in Hopper. Thank you Yana Rolnik (@artnomad_ny) for a recent visit to the museum and the beautiful article she wrote for @artswestchester about our David Salle exhibition. Her insightful commentary captured the heart of Salle’s work and how it connects with both our historical context and today’s culture. Excerpt: “Nostalgia is one of the themes that connects Salle and Hopper, who are otherwise such stylistically different artists. For both artists, the nostalgia is the response to “anxieties of their eras.” Salle is anxious about media and digital marketing overload caused by technology. On the other hand, Hopper, who lived through the tumultuous time of the Great Depression and WWII, rapid urbanization, and commercialization, expressed his angst by gazing inward into the subject’s soul and creating “monumental silences,” images of stillness and solitude void of external chaos. It’s ironic that Hopper, who is considered a quintessential American realist painter, eliminates the outside frenetic world in his carefully planned compositions. Meanwhile, postmodernist Salle’s method is based more on intuition than planning.
