The opening lines of the book - "My father, James Witherspoon, is a bigamist” pretty much set the tone of the book. 📚 The book is written with the perspectives of both the girls separately in two sections.They live their separate lives and what happens when they meet is what the story reveals slowly. The first part is about Dana who's the one who has to keep the identity of her father a secret, living a life of deprivation while Chaurisse enjoys the privileges of a well to do upbringing and the love of both her parents. Both families are dysfunctional where family secrets are carefully hidden. The writing is good and maintains the necessary tight grip till the end. 📚 A book about bigamy, the story treads on a path which could be judgemental but the way it is written is where it's power lies.The friendship that develops between the two sisters without being aware of each others' identity is unique. The Doctor Who Sat for a Year 🧘♂️ Brendan Kelly ⭐️⭐️💫 I was intrigued by this because meditation is something I’ve been exploring recently and I really wanted to know what a psychiatrist had to say about it. Another tick because the author is Irish and practicing psychology in Ireland and another tick because there’s a cat🐈⬛ Psychiatrist Brendan Kelly starts 2017 with the resolution to meditate for 15 minutes every day of the year. This book is effectively his daily journal entries on the progress of meditation, his surrounding life and thoughts on Buddhism. Each month of the year he focuses on a different Buddhist concept including the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. It was reassuring to hear that his journey of meditation was not always an easy one and that focusing can be a real struggle. There were a few really fascinating points raised about psychiatry, meditation and Buddhism but they were all quite brief and without much detail. The rhythm of the book and the simple way it was written meant it was a relaxing read and the audiobook was a nice before bed listen. It did get a little repetitive towards the end but it really is just someone’s journal of their own meditation journey and not much more than that. An easy listen on @borrowbox if you already have an interest in this sort of thing and don’t want anything too educational/fact heavy. At one point, I did find myself getting slightly tired of all the 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐥𝐞 references (IYKYK). The two main characters, Dawn and Natalie, are pretty awful people but Frieda does a great job in showing why they do the things they do even if it’s pretty 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞. MY THOUGHTS 💭 If youre a fan of true crime podcasts, you’ll really enjoy this book. It has a lot of dark humor and a sprinkle of romance which I found really entertaining. This kept me at the edge of my seat and I really could not figure out who the killer was. All the characters were so unreliable, which annoyed me 😂. It is very bingeable and addicting. I just finished reading Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel Never Let Me Go. Warning ⚠️: This story is a HEAVY read about love, nostalgia, friendship, and loss.
