Here are the steps to create this craft: 🌧 Print a cloud and rain drop template from Google. 🌧 Cut out the cloud shape and glue it on the paper. 🌧 Cover the cloud shape with cotton balls! 🌧 Trace the rain drop shapes on holographic paper and cut them out. We commenced the first day of our workshop which focused on #AssistiveTechnologies for Persons with #VisualImpairments. The workshop was filled with hands-on learning, creative #inventions, and meaningful connections. The Morning Session began with Wolfgang Kowatsch and Assistive Technology experts from Fachhochschule Technikum Wien Vienna who helped the makers in constructing the echo-braille and metabraille units. Metabraille and echobraille are an open-source, mobile #braille keyboard. The echo-braille units are a cheaper alternative to meta-braille. In the afternoon the session was more interactive as the testers, which was #blind persons explored how to use the echo and metabrailles that had been set up by the makers in the morning session. The testers learned how to display #braille as text on a phone and a laptop without the need to touch the screen, which proved to be more efficient and easier compared to manually typing on the device keyboard. Also, we conducted interviews with testers to gather feedback on their experience using the braille units. The feedback gathered would play a major role in refining these tools. Conclusively, the first day of our workshop was a success, and we thank all the participants for showing up to this #empowering initiative that eases the lives of persons with #visual impairment. 🌍 Tomorrow is Earth Day! And I am here with an easy CVI-friendly Earth Day craft! There are so many materials that you can use for this craft! In this example, I used blue felt and green metallic paper. Out of this world fidget sensory box. Sensory boxes are fun for kids to explore. This one comes from Creativity for Kids by @fabercastellusa, which is sold at Michael’s and on the Faber Castell website. This is a fun find for low vision kiddos, and any kids who like sensory play. You can also make your own sensory box with fidget toys so that when kiddos find objects they can play with each toy. There are so many fun fidgets in this box, with many high contrast bright colors. You can sort, match, scoop, or count as just a few activities to accompany this sensory box. This Bug Hunt book is perfect to target “put in” directions. 🐝 This can be used as an errorless activity. To set this up, students would be given a field of one bug and would need to put it in the bug jar. 🐞 This could also be completed as an identification activity by giving the student a field of 2+ bugs and having them identify the corresponding bug for each page. 🦋 Bonus! Looking for a fun, tactile, CVI-friendly craft for next week?! Check out this flower craft!🌸 To make this craft: 1️⃣Print a flower template from Google. 2️⃣Glue the template onto black cardstock. 3️⃣Cut a circle from yellow paper and glue it in the middle. This will help provide a visual prompt for students to decorate the petals, rather than the center. Students can also decorate the center with yellow materials! 4️⃣Pick any textured paper or materials to decorate with. In this example, we used purple holographic paper, purple corrugated paper, purple pom poms, purple felt and purple glitter foam paper. Listen, I've learned the hard way that if you don't have boundaries, you'll get eaten alive. Because really, you aren't the star of the show. Everyone is the star of their own show. But if your boundaries are too rigid, it's hard to get anything done with you, know... the people you work with. Boundaries are technically a limit between one entity and another. For heart-centered folks like us, they're guidelines that we set up when interacting with other people so that we can come together for a mutual purpose. Boundaries guide what WE do, not what other people can and can not do. We are not puppeteers (as fun as that might sound) who can control others. But we can control how we show up in relation to others. We have rigid boundaries when we aren't taking into consideration other people's needs. Porous boundaries happen when we don't stand up for our own needs, and only cater to others. Healthy boundaries allow us to have our needs met AND work with the other person to meet their own needs. I use St. Patrick’s Day for my month long theme, so I am back with another low-prep CVI friendly craft idea! I printed out a shamrock template on white paper (or you can use any preferred color for your student), cut it out, and glued it on black paper. Then students will glue various green textures on the shamrock. I used: 💚green pom poms 💚green glitter foam paper 💚green metallic paper 💚green felt Don’t have different textures? Cleaning out my office, I found some delightful activities from the past when my high-school braille student was in elementary school. She liked fanciful stories and Halloween so the first activity is "Talking Heads." I drew pictures of a pumpkin head with 3 different expressions and did the same with a with's head made to face the pumpkin. Then I named the pumpkin Punky and the witch Witchy. She had to create a conversation between them using some of the vocabulary and contractions She was studying. She was so enamored by this assignment that she wrote about 15 pages of dialog. She was to cut out the strips of dialog and paste them next to the character that was speaking. The second shows what an early Greg the Braille Frog looked like. To keep her from reading the braille with her eyes, sometimes I had to make elaborate pictures and designs over the paper. My art education and reading specialist credentials are a plus in these situations. One has to teach sighted children to read braille using different methods than one would a totally blind child. Once she realized braille lessons could be fun, she took off like a racecar and had about 223 signs and contractions in her vocabulary by Christmas. She reading braille by touch at between 40 and 60 wpm (words per minute) depending on the type of reading. I'm binding her story and I will show it to her next week when she returns to school.
