One of the most perfect (long) lunchtimes I've ever had - this litter-pick honestly was life-affirming stuff. I'd just had a nature programme on in the background while doing the day job, and it had really reminded me of the need to just keep taking action (my mantra is basically: 'the forest helps me breathe; I must help it breathe too'). I'm also keen to clean up waterways (this inevitably has its challenges - for one: I have no wellies; for two: I can't swim, so generally have low-level anxiety around water) so nearby Wanstead Park immediately presented itself as my destination, ticking both forest and water boxes. The plan as always was to clear as much rubbish as possible from around the perimeter to prevent it from rolling or blowing into the main natural (actually human-made in this case) feature at some point. As soon as I arrived I was reminded of the challenge of the recent undergrowth explosion - great to see nature nature-ing, but also depressing knowing there's stuff buried in there invisibly for the next few months - but because the water level has been soooo low here in recent times (again, not exactly an environmental positive, but with an upside from a litter-picker's perspective) at least I could get down to the 'water's edge' such that it is, and reach some of the crap that's been lobbed into the water at some point. Every plastic bottle or shredded can that otherwise would be floating around harming the water-based wildlife felt like it counted treble. So why so life-affirming? Well, 1. obviously it's always satisfying both helping nature and improving the aesthetic of an area, but also 2. it was the most glorious day weather-wise, so it was lovely to just enjoy a slower pace rather than just running around as usual, and 3. I got to really appreciate the biodiversity all around - loads of birdsong, more butterfly species than I remember seeing for a long time, and the perfect opportunity to try out a wild flower identification app I recently downloaded. While we were at Wanstead Park visiting the bluebells the other week we also had a look around the rest of the park. It was once part of the formal gardens of Wanstead House which was one of the largest mansions in the UK. The park is a Grade II listed landscape. Although the mansion no longer stands you can find The Temple (also Grade II listed) built around 1750-60. This very grand looking building with the white pillars at the front had various uses over the years including a poultry house, keeper’s house and garden pheasantry. It is now used as a little museum of the local area. Ruins of the Grotto Boathouse can also be found in the park. The statue of Andromeda used to stand on the front wall of the Grotto. It was built in 1761 with the roof and walls covered with coral, seaweed, stalactites, elegant sea-shells, and petrifactions. So fortunate to have found time today to go for a walk through the bluebell wood at Wanstead Park, before their season finishes. Gorgeous aroma and an assault of indigo on the eye. Great to bathe in the blueness for a bit. Going to hang out in the bluebells aways makes me feel close to my parents too, they loved seeing them in Portglenone, and my mum painted them several times.
