For Water Saving Week (13-17 May) we are heading pondside for our Plant of the Week! We have fallen in love with Juncus ensifolius; the swordleaf rush otherwise rather delightfully known as the flying hedgehog plant - who can resist that name? This rush has attractive, slender bright green foliage of around 20 to 45cm in height, which complements our garden’s irises perfectly, and it is another plant attractive to dragonflies. Its spiky greenish-dark brown flowers bloom from June to August, followed by the distinctive dark brown seed heads which resemble tiny hedgehogs. It is easy to grow and suits most aspects as long as it is planted in wet mud or constantly moist soil; it is also happy down to a water depth of around 15cm, a shallow pond shelf is ideal. This fully hardy perennial can be semi-evergreen or evergreen depending on its location and requires little maintenance. In autumn, trim any foliage which has died back to just above the water surface, and divide any congested clumps in spring when new growth appears. Ponds are a great way of catching water and combined with plenty of marginal plants, they help to boost biodiversity: they are an essential component of the #FloodResilientGarden! We look now to the Flood Resilient Garden’s stylish pergola for our Plant of the Week! With our increasingly hot summers, a cool, shady retreat is also useful in the garden, and this is where the right climber will help. The dramatic leaves and autumn colour of Chinese Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus henryana) is one option to consider, as is a beautifully scented honeysuckle, but today we fancy a closer look at something more exotic in the shape of Akebia quinata – the chocolate vine. With cupped chocolate-coloured blooms and spicy vanilla scent, this vigorous, twining, semi-evergreen climber grows to a height of 8 to 10 metres with a spread of around 5 metres. It is fully hardy in the UK, and prefers full sun or dappled shade. It flowers from March to May and can develop curious sausage-shaped fruits in summer. A sheltered spot such as the pergola is the perfect position as it protects the flowers from late frosts. The showy flowers are borne in clusters; ‘Amethyst Glow’ sports reddish-purple blooms while striking cream-coloured forms with purple centres such as ‘Shirobana’ and ‘White Chocolate’ resemble iced gems. Check out our pergola at RHS Chelsea; its design features large gutters to capture and channel storm water for later use, which in turn helps to lessen runoff on rainy days. A new and useful factor to help boost flood resilience! Our research shows that last year British people spent on average £402 on their gardens, but this could be at risk of being washed away as 1 in 8 UK adults say they have experience flooding of their garden in the past 12 months. Our gardens can be a first line of defence against flood damage, that’s why we’re calling on garden lovers across the country to take action and think about their flood risk and make small, but important changes to their gardens to ensure it can both endure a flood and minimise destruction to your home. This week’s Plant of the Week is Iris: another Chelsea favourite! And once again, we have looked at close cousins for the #FloodResilientGarden – take a bow Iris louisiana! Unlike the bearded irises, elsewhere in the show, whose basal rhizomes need a summer baking, our choice likes to be wet – or at least, convincingly damp – at all times. A lover of full sun or partial shade, it is perfect for bog gardens and pond shallows to a water depth of around 20cm, where it can be used to soften the margins. The sword-like leaves provide an architectural note, with stately stems topped with flowers which almost seem to float, adding a dramatic accent in May through to July at around 80cm to a metre in height. The colour palette is a wide one: choose from white, cream, pink, bronze, blue, red, through to exotic deep purples. Named cultivars include ‘Black Gamecock’ (giant flowers of deepest purple); the award winning ‘Ann Chowning’ (cherry red); and ‘Her Highness’ (elegant white): all have velvety blooms with bright flashes of yellow. They are easy maintenance plants, which are either semi-evergreen or fully die down in winter depending on location. Take care not to cut into emerging shoots if tidying up is left until spring and cut back to just above the water line. As well as being easy on our eyes, these irises are attractive to dragonflies and damselflies. It is great fun to watch the adults zoom in to perch on the leaves to rest, and their nymphs crawl up onto the stems to emerge as adults! Geums are often the star of the show at Chelsea, and they make a stellar Plant of the Week, too! For our #FloodResilientGarden we are thinking outside the box to look at close relatives of familiar favourites to find something better suited to our conditions. So here is Geum rivale; the clue is in its common name, water avens, and yes, it loves wet feet! Our chosen plant has long, rich red stems and sepals, with contrasting dusky pink or orange drooping flowers, followed by attractive, long-lasting seed heads which resemble tiny raspberries. It is an herbaceous perennial with a long flowering period from late April to August, then dying back over winter. It grows to just under knee height (40 to 45cm), and forms clumps of around the same size. Geum rivale is native to UK, fully hardy and is usually found in bogs and damp meadows, in sun or part shade; the sunnier the site, the wetter its feet should be. It will feature in the damper shadier areas of the Flood Resilient Garden, and would love a spot by your garden pond, if you have one. It spreads via its roots, so divide plants every few years when they become congested. This plant is available to buy in its native, species form, or there are some choice named cultivars including ‘Leonard’s Variety’, which has flowers of a dusty, bronze-rose colour; or ‘Marmalade’ for a bright orange, though the latter is smaller than most, reaching around a foot (30cm) in height. Staying with the edible theme for our Plant of the Week, let’s talk fruit trees! In our Flood Resilient Garden, we are making smart use of different levels; this not only allows us to control where we want the water to go, but also means we can create lots of different conditions, providing plenty of planting options. And, critically for conventional gardening, one of our areas features a raised mound, which means we can still plant pretties which prefer drier ground. Every garden needs a beautiful tree and our mound features a gorgeous quince, Cydonia oblonga, which usually blooms slightly later than the more familiar fruit trees. The striking two-tone blossom is self-fertile, so it can produce fruit without the need for another tree nearby, which is handy in a smaller space. When the fragrant, yellow fruit arrive in Autumn, they can be baked, used in tarts, or made into membrillo, an exquisite fruit jelly. For the classically-minded gardener, apple trees are also a good and characterful choice and, like quince, there are some self-fertile and prolific croppers available, such as ‘Red Windsor’, ‘Scrumptious’, or ‘Red Falstaff’ – producing tasty apples that are not usually found in the shops. In challenging conditions, a sturdy rootstock is key to success as it produces strong roots which anchor the tree in moist or windy weather. Look for the M number: M106 is half-standard, which means the tree grows to around 3-4 metres, while M25 will produce a larger tree. Very dwarfing rootstocks are often not all that strong, and the ensuing tree may not thrive, but a key thing to remember is that the sizes of fruit trees indicate how big they grow in optimum conditions – at altitude, in wet soil or in a cold or exposed location they may be substantially smaller. And all in all, fruit trees are a bit of a favourite round here, fully earning their keep with a long season of interest from spring blossom through to fruit and autumn colour!

@naomisladegardening writes…I love winter gardens so much that I wrote a whole book on the subject! But a well-planted winter garden does not just look great, but can help with flood resilience as well. Evergreens provide shelter for wildlife and dense planting of grasses and perennials, left to stand after they have faded, slow the flow of water on the ground, giving it more time to sink into the soil and mitigating flooding elsewhere. It might be spring now (hooray!), but RHS The Winter Garden is packed with ideas and inspiration to plan a better, brighter, more flood resilient garden later! For garden drama and all-round good looks, it is hard to beat a hydrangea, and this is our highly glamorous Plant of the Week! The most well-known and popular species is Hydrangea macrophylla with its mophead or lacecap style flowers. These love lots of water, so are ideal for a flood resilient garden. A fabulous alternative for a slightly drier spot is Hydrangea paniculata, an all-round good doer with prolific conical blooms that fizz out of the border like rockets. Hydrangeas are deciduous shrubs that are suited to all moist soil types, grow to around head height, and prefer full sun or part shade. Because the heads of ‘flowers’ are made up of infertile bracts, they bloom for ages. Cultivars of H. paniculata are often white or greenish becoming pinker with age, but the flower colour of quirky H. macrophylla depends on soil type: blue when grown on acid soils and pink on alkaline. Faded blooms add winter interest to the garden and protect the stems from frost, or dried flowers can be incorporated into stylish flower or wreath arrangements. Spring pruning depends on the chosen species. H. macrophylla needs only a light prune as it blooms on new wood grown in the previous season. With H. paniculata removal of just the flowerheads results in plentiful, smaller flowers, while a deeper prune down to around 20 centimetres provides fewer, yet huge blooms. If any new shoots suffer from frost damage, then cut out the damaged wood to leave the healthy growth remaining on each stem. Our native plants from @wildhaweswater have sprung into growth, so Flood Resilient Garden co-designer @naomisladegardening has been potting them on! @dalefootcomposts is just over the hill from RSPB Haweswater in Cumbria and they have partnered with us to supply peat-free compost made locally, using sheep’s wool and bracken – so hopefully the little plants will spread their roots and feel at home! Dalefoot Composts sister company, Barker and Bland Ltd, works to restore peat bogs, meanwhile. These fragile upland habitats, not only do they store an enormous amount of carbon, but they are a valuable weapon against flooding. When it rains, the bogs absorb water, and it is also captured in rough upland vegetation which slows the flow. So what started life as a downpour is released gradually into the valleys and rivers below, so the surrounding towns and villages are less likely to be inundated. The local plants themselves, meanwhile, are not just attractive but very well adapted to a somewhat soggy lifestyle and it is these attributes that lend them to appearing in the Flood Resilient Garden at #RHSChelsea2024 ! @edbarsley @teds_uk @rspb @naturalengland @alpinegardensoc @the_rhs @belderboslandscapes @hortus_loci @plantsforponds.co.uk @vegplotting @waterartisans @new_wood_trees #PeatFree #PeatFreeApril #Conservation #PeatFreeGardening #PeatFreePeople #Cumbria #rhschelsea #floodresilience #chelseaflowershow #showgarden #plantingdesign #gardensforall #extremeweather #plantsaremagic #sustainability #plantspeopleplace #urbangarden #meadowflowers #meadowgarden #watertolerantplants #gardeningideas #climatechange #gardeninspiration #yearroundgardening #resilientplants #rightplantrightplace #floodgarden #plantsforpollinators #conservationgarden

What is your favourite later spring bulb? We simply adore snake’s head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris), our fabulous Plant of the Week! A lover of damp meadows, these plants produce small but dramatic flowers in April and May, adorning flood resilient landscapes with their chequered tiffany lampshades. Most blooms are a dusky purple hue, with a smaller proportion (around seven percent) a refined white. Undisturbed, the bulbs naturalise well in grass, where their slim stems and leaves reach around a foot in height, and since they prefer cool, moist summers, give them the dappled shade of a humus-rich woodland edge, if your meadow is in full sun. They are members of the lily family, so lily beetle can be an issue, but if the bright red culprits are caught fast enough damage is usually slight. With around 97% of their natural habitat lost over the years, adding these dainty flowers to our gardens can help spread their range, and they are an extra food source for bumblebees, too. Snake’s head fritillaries can be seen in abundance at North Meadow National Nature Reserve in Cricklade, Wiltshire, and in a good year, there are thousands of nodding flowers, since the flood meadows that adjoin the River Thames here are managed specifically to conserve this species. For dramatic foliage and a jungle vibe, our Plant of the Week is fabulous Rodgersia! This is a highly architectural plant with luscious, ribbed, palmate leaves and, depending on the chosen species, will grow from waist to head height. An herbaceous perennial, it dies down in winter to re-emerge in spring and is a must-have for a pondside location or bog garden, where it laps up the moisture to reward the grower with light, airy sprays of white or pink flowers in summer. Emerging foliage may require protection from slugs at first, but they soon toughen up and become inedible, which prompts the pesky critters to glide off and seek easier fare. Early foliage is usually tinted bronze and then matures to a darker green, and there are prominent ribs along the leaves. Rodgersia aesculifolia (which as a ‘good doer’ has been honoured with a prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, or AGM), and Rodgersia podophylla, are larger candidates that grow to around chest or head height, while smaller Rodgersia pinnata is more suitable if space is tight. The latter species also has some of the more striking bronze-leaved examples, such as ’Chocolate Wing’ and ‘Bronze Peacock’. If you wander streamside in the UK, look out for striking hart’s tongue fern (Asplenium scolopendrium) - our Plant of the Week. This native fern loves steep banks, cracks in walls, and other damp shaded places, where it shrugs a constant misting from fast flowing water, or a more substantial floodwater dousing, with ease. At this time of the year, fresh new foliage can be seen unfurling within the rosette of older, darker leaves which are strap-like and evergreen, and grow to around knee height. These give rise to the fern’s common name of hart’s tongue, as they resemble the tongues of deer. As seen in these photos, this characterful creature is distinctly different from the familiar finely divided fronds of most other ferns. A versatile, hardy and slow-growing garden plant, now is the time to give it a quick tidy-up and mulch to set it up for the season ahead. A flood resilient garden needs plants that are super tough, so today we highlight hardy sedges as our Plant of the Week! These grass-like plants can easily shrug off the stormy weather and heavy rain that we see more frequently nowadays, with their fountain of dense stems that helps to trap excess water and then gently release it back into the surrounding soil. Carex is the Latin name to look for and this group provides a wide variety of garden worthy plants of short to medium height. They provide year-round interest because they are evergreen and they are also a great foil for floral highlights in the border. Carex oshimensis is a particular favourite, and it grows slowly to form mounds of around half a metre in height. The variety ‘Everest’ has variegated white stems, copes with most soils except boggy, and prefers part shade; ‘Evergold’ has yellow stripes, can tolerate some moisture, and comes into its own in a sunnier spot. Comb through the plants in winter to remove any dead foliage. Carex is often used in street planting schemes called SuDS (sustainable drainage systems) which are designed to deal with storm water runoff from buildings and roads. They are also found in many natural habitats in the UK (Carex pendula or Carex paniculata there) as well as these most urban of spaces. It is a super versatile plant! With all the recent rain (and more), it is time to shine our spotlight on willow for our Plant of the Week! They love to have wet feet and act as a natural filter for any water that comes their way, perfect for flood resilience! There is a willow suited to any garden and we want to highlight coral bark willow (aka Salix alba var. vitellina ‘Britzensis’) as it can be managed easily for small as well as larger plots. It is a medium height tree, often grown as a shrub by cutting it back hard in early spring to ground level or whatever height is desired. This will keep it well within bounds. Dozens of new shoots emerge from these cuts which develop into bright red to orange-red stems that glow in the winter garden. Use the cut willow stems as plant stakes or to weave larger supports or other fun structures for the garden. It is an endlessly useful plant! 💧 INSTALL💧 This client had an overgrown drainage bed that was abundant in grasses and while functional, was not pretty. 👎 We cleared out all but the mid bed grasses which sit in about 3-4 inches of water and established a perennial perimeter. So, what perennial florals do well in waterlogged areas? 💧YARROW 💧DAYLILY 💧RUSSIAN SAGE 💧BEE BALM 💧ECHINACEA 💧BUTTERFLY BUSH 💧SNAKEROOT These will grow in to become a functional, beautiful pollinator haven. 🦋 🐝 #mamagardenco #pollinatorgarden #watertolerantplants #sullivancountyny #zone5b #upstatenygardens

Austin Texas? No. BBQ restaurant? No. Catered food? Nope! This is our Vice President’s beautiful home who is also a passionate professional cook for his family and friends. While going to law school he worked as a professional chef years ago. His entire backyard is prepped to serve a mouth watering experience. Mike hosted our Board Meeting tonight and concocted 2 types of BBQ ribs, links, tri tip and a handful of wine and beer. We also had a little lesson from our resident Sommelier wine professional Charlotte. This is literate the taste of the good life. You just need to be an Eichler owner and be a board member as a prerequisite #ranchosanmiguel #ranchosanmiguel_wc #ranchosanmiguel_walnutcreek #walnutcreek #walnutcreekca #walnutcreekrealestate #cactus #cacti #watertolerantplants

#PlantoftheMonth Are deer are eating your yard plants? Replace them with fast-growing, drought and deer-tolerant bushes like the Canberra Grevillea shrub. This plant will attract beautiful hummingbirds and butterflies to your yard. This shrub blooms in late winter and flowers over a long period of time — no water is needed during the summer once established. 📸 | @winterbloominc #Plantofthemonth #gardening #planting #plants #hummingbirds #bees #watertolerantplants #drought #waterefficient

Desert Marigold Baileya multiradiata #100dayproject2022 The yellow flowers are so prolific on this low growing cover plant. A lesson here about getting to know a new garden before you start changing it! Our garden backs directly onto the tidal Tiver Medway- and floods quite a lot. This raised bed has worked quite well as a defence against the flood water and also spreading top soil all over the lawn. #rivermedway #medwayriver #aylesford #aylesfordkent #kentcountryside #tidalriver #tidalflooding #flooddefence #knowyourgarden #watertolerantplants #raisedbeds #raisedbedgarden #raisedgardenbeds #getoutofmypub
