I have just finished this wonderful garden design project in Chilworth, just outside Southampton. Absolutely thrilled with how it all came together. The finishing touches were the Chamaerops humilis in the large pot as the central focal point of the area, which looks great with the large river pebbles around it. One of our latest designs, where we have been asked to redesign a clients existing socializing area. We have broken up the large expanse of decking with areas of planting and added a seating area with a fire pit that is sunken down into the garden. A new aluminium pergola and better defined areas for dining, sitting and the client's bar make the space a perfect area to entertain, and enjoy the rest of the garden. This week’s Plant of the Week is Iris: another Chelsea favourite! And once again, we have looked at close cousins for the #FloodResilientGarden – take a bow Iris louisiana! Unlike the bearded irises, elsewhere in the show, whose basal rhizomes need a summer baking, our choice likes to be wet – or at least, convincingly damp – at all times. A lover of full sun or partial shade, it is perfect for bog gardens and pond shallows to a water depth of around 20cm, where it can be used to soften the margins. The sword-like leaves provide an architectural note, with stately stems topped with flowers which almost seem to float, adding a dramatic accent in May through to July at around 80cm to a metre in height. The colour palette is a wide one: choose from white, cream, pink, bronze, blue, red, through to exotic deep purples. Named cultivars include ‘Black Gamecock’ (giant flowers of deepest purple); the award winning ‘Ann Chowning’ (cherry red); and ‘Her Highness’ (elegant white): all have velvety blooms with bright flashes of yellow. They are easy maintenance plants, which are either semi-evergreen or fully die down in winter depending on location. Take care not to cut into emerging shoots if tidying up is left until spring and cut back to just above the water line. As well as being easy on our eyes, these irises are attractive to dragonflies and damselflies. It is great fun to watch the adults zoom in to perch on the leaves to rest, and their nymphs crawl up onto the stems to emerge as adults! Love Umbels BUT most of all I love PINK umbels!!! Even if this one is a bugger to germinate, divide or track down in specialist nurseries! I stumbled across Chaereophyllum hirsirtum ‘Roseum’ 25 years ago and slowly overtime I have nurtured it to produce many pink frothy babies! I now have around 30 in my garden and last year they made it to the front of the house nestled amongst my yew domes. Rosa Generous Gardener is in the backdrop and will be a perfect match in about a week. Vroeger las ik een heel romantisch (lees: oubollig) boek, De Rozen van Hofwijck. Geen idee meer waar het over ging, maar wat ik wel weet is dat de tuin altijd heel beeldend werd beschreven. Met ‘de bloeiende egelantier’ en ‘de geur van de seringen’... Ik kreeg dan altijd zo’n zin in die tuin! Het is een gevoel dat ik nog steeds probeer te realiseren in mijn eigen tuin. Zo ook de tuin van mijn oma. Een kleine tuin aan de rand van een sloot, koeien aan de overkant, huisje met rieten dak, en een grasveld vol madeliefjes omgeven door een zee aan judaspenning met een bloeiende sering... Ik weet niet eens of het beeld klopt, want mijn oma verhuisde naar een wat praktischere woning toen ik nog geen 10 jaar was, maar het gevoel dat die plek bij mij oproept, komt dicht bij het idee van mijn droomtuin. Spring has finally arrived and it draws us outside to enjoy the sun, the beautiful colours of nature and the interaction with each other ☀️🌱🤝 Grorudparken offers a diverse population group the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities, including sports, play, recreation, socializing, and cultural events - connecting Lillomarka, Grorudparken, Leirfossen, and Hølaløkka. With the river and water as the focal point, the goal was to seamlessly incorporate existing cultural landmarks and structures along the river into a comprehensive plan, while also introducing new experiences within a holistic framework 🌊💦 Ensuring accessibility and safety was a top priority, leading to a focus on lighting in outdoor spaces. Together with ÅF Lighting, LINK Landscape developed a creative lighting concept that not only enhances safety but also adds a unique identity to the park. Collaboration with various agencies within the Oslo municipality and the district was vital to the success of the project, resulting in positive outcomes 💡 Improving the water quality of Groruddammen was also a significant aspect of the project, with various measures implemented to purify the water. As a pioneering effort in Norway, the project utilized phytosanitation, a system where vegetation attracts toxins from contaminated water, purifying the soil within 2-3 years. This helps reduce the impact on the environment by minimizing the need for removal and sea transportation of materials to other locations. Design to reality- a small north facing front garden completed with planting today for a very happy customer. The beds are arranged in rows, reminiscent of a stage set. It’s the dwarf azaleas and rhodos time to shine in centre stage just now, and the hydrangeas at the back will have their time later in the year. Can’t wait to see them develop and fill out.
