Monday was just one of those perfect Santa Cruz days. Weather great, pups & walks great, and kind human interactions. On West Cliff at Steamers, a sweet young man Joseph, was selling books at an outdoor table, and I bought one. The book is called Ode to Travel, by local artist, photographer, chef, Patrick Trefz. @patricktrefz While looking at the book, Joseph called Patrick on his cell, and said, hey there’s a lady who wants to buy your book, can you swing over and sign it? Within 10 minutes, Patrick rides up on his bike with a Sharpie. 👏👏 What an absolute treat to talk with both of these men, Joseph and Patrick. They made an already great day better. I’m not sure if I’ve shared this photo before but I stare at it every day as my phone wallpaper so I am sharing it again! This is by far my favorite hawk. It’s a very very dark morph Red-tailed hawk. I love red tails and have always been fascinated by their color morphs. I started seeing a dark morph in my local park over ten years ago, but then this one also appeared which was even darker than the last. Since it likes to hang out just a mile away on West Cliff Drive every year, I’d like to think maybe it was the offspring of the one I used to watch back in the day. It's soft and squishy, but it's not icky! It's a purple encrusting sponge! Sponges aren't plants, but animals! See those teeny tiny holes? The sponge draws water through them, filters it for oxygen and food and pushes it back out the larger holes. Sponges are a common food source for one of our favorite tidepool finds: the nudibranch! Remember, if you visit the Natural Bridges State Beach tidepools, look at these fantastic creatures, but don't touch them.
