Day 1 & 2 of our Spring Camping Trip - 6 friends, 6 bicycles, 3 trucks, 3 trailers, 1 dog, firewood, copious amounts of food and drink and lots of board and card games - all loaded up and ready for a good time. Pulling out and headed up the Pacific Coast Highway 1 I had forgotten how incredibly beautiful and underrated this part of the California coastline is. It was cool and windy with some marine layer mist in the afternoons and evening. We spent a day exploring Glass Beach and watching the harbor seals sun themselves on the rocks. We then spent time enjoying a couple bottles of wine and a picnic lunch at Pacific Star Winery, perched high on the cliffs above the Pacific Ocean. We even spotted a humpback whale just off the coast making his/her way North. I’m finding myself enjoying going outside after work more and more. In fact, I demand I take advantage of it. Every time I leave my apartment when the sun is shining I’m skipping and dancing in the sun. What’s going on?! 😅 This day there was 2 more hours of sun to enjoy after work. I drove down the coastline and got to this spot not expecting anything, but I remember the feeling I used to have when I went out to shoot. Excitement of not knowing what would be there, but genuinely enjoying the adventure of the day. These pride of madeiras were blooming so hard. You can find them all along the coastline! Disclaimer: No one told me about this place. I saw a photo of it a few months back and had no idea where it was. I searched it on my own using photos and Google Maps. It was less than 10 minutes that I found exactly where this was. 🙃 This is what they mean by finding it on your own is better, especially in small areas that cannot handle a huge traffic flow. Chris and Al’s engagement session at Point Dume is a PERFECT example of why it can be worth waking up for an early morning session! In our trip to California, we saw the story of fire. Though the last 2-3 years they’ve finally gotten rain, before that it’d been dry for a long time. All up and down northern California you see the results in stands of burned-out trees. I don’t point this out as a comment on the destructive power of fire. Fire is a part of things. The Central Valley of California is where the real violence happens. As you drive through it, you can see mile after mile of totally enslaved land. Almond, orange, and other trees as far as the eye can see with nothing growing underneath. All planted so squarely and uniformly that not only can you see straight down every row until your eye is lost in the haze, but the diagonals do the same thing, marching out in straight lines to infinity. It is equal parts endless and hopeless. Oh, I know I eat food that comes from there. Organics, too. Nonetheless, the relief as you rise into the first, gentle swells of the grassy Sierra Nevada foothills is almost overwhelming. When we finally reach the mountains around Yosemite, though the silver and charred bones of the trees are everywhere, so too are the Oregon Juncos. When I finally get close enough to see one atop a burned off young tree, I’m struck by the fact the colors of his feathers match perfectly with the what fire has left behind. The scaly orange bark of the giant Jeffrey Pines is the same color as his covert feathers. His buffy underside is like the silver inner layers of the burned-off trees. And his black hood matches the fire’s charred wake. All up and down the coast of Northern California, the thick-knotted pines, crusted in sap, stand waiting in the morning sun for the sparrows. I don’t recall a single stop we made where, somewhere, the down-up and trill of the Song Sparrow didn’t ring out. This is more than about spring territory. It’s about time. It’s about stepping through the Wild world while the Song Sparrows blaze your path along the ocean. Or perhaps and better, it’s about you marking their world as you pass by it. Sometimes, you’re moving so fast you’d never know that each time one of these diminutive birds leans his head back to sing, a Milky’s Way worth of stars comes pouring out into the blue sun of morning.
