Balancing being gay and being a Christian has been one of the greatest internal challenges of my otherwise privileged life. While I believe labels oversimplify things, these are two of the most undeniable parts of my identity. For many years I thought I could only be one or the other, but over the past couple years, I’ve started to understand how I can be both. It breaks my heart to know that there are other people out there thinking that God doesn’t love them just for who they are. But the truth is, there are people that love me and there are people who love you. And the one thing I am sure about more than anything in this life is that God loves all of us no matter what! If you’re reading this and can relate in some way, I just need you to know that you are perfect just the way you are and I am always happy to talk! The words in this piece are heartbreaking, but they are in the past and I am happy to be in another chapter of my life. Thank you to @pacificvideoaus for this live photograph from my Short + Sweet Sydney Festival dress rehearsal a few weeks ago. ✨️ I like this shot because I can see the sincerity of the moment coming across the way I felt it inside. I wrote, directed, and performed this little monologue myself. I didn't quite know how it may have appeared to an audience until I saw these dress rehearsal photographs, which I appreciate very much. They are wonderful mementos of what was a very special piece to me. 🙏 In this photograph, I am bathed in stage lights, and even my skin has a golden glow to it. I used to hate the colour of my skin (a topic I explore in this monologue and also my book). Self-loathing was tied to my shame over being a 'coloured' person.
