We had a great time at East Butler High School in Brainard as Adam, our Environmental Educator, shared insights about Nebraska amphibians and reptiles with the students! By incorporating environmental education into conversations with students, we provide them with the knowledge and motivation needed to become stewards of the natural world around them. As spring approaches, we are looking forward to more class presentations and field trips! #LPSNRD #WesternTigerSalamander

While jeeping on the Ophir Pass, Colorado, between Telluride and Silverton last week, we came upon a beautifully pristine alpine lake at > 11,000’/3353 meters. We saw hundreds of relatively large amphibious creatures in the water that I could not immediately identify. If you scroll right, you will see google map screenshots indicating where this body of water, named Bolam Lake, is located. As an aquatic biologist who was way out of my familiar geographic range, I was compelled to do a little homework to identify what I’d seen. Apparently, these 6-10” long amphibians are ‘water dog’ larvae forms of Western Tiger Salamanders (Ambystoma mavortium). Geographical range maps indicate that here, in SW Colorado, these animals are classified as subspecies A. mavortium nebulosum aka ‘Arizona Tiger Salamander’. After a little more research, I was reminded of an unusual polymorphic life history which may include a neotenic form. This ‘gilled adult’ (think axolotl and olm) retains juvenile characteristics of aquatic larvae and remains in the water in lieu of undergoing metamorphosis into a terrestrial adult form. Apparently these forms can occur in bodies of water where no predatory fish exist and they can grow to far larger sizes than either aquatic larvae or terrestrial adults may attain. Among the hundreds of individuals that I observed in Bolam Lake, there was definitely a discrepancy in size and color/pattern. There were lighter colored/lightly patterned individuals of smaller size as compared to larger grey individuals. I wonder if I was observing some individuals which were soon to metamorphose (smaller, patterned) as well as neotenic life forms that remain in the water and grow larger? I tried to look up fishing/fish species in Bolam Lake, CO. The lack of fish in there may provide the means for neoteny to exist. I haven’t a fishing app that would directly answer my query. If any fishing or herpetologically-inclined members have read through to here, please feel free to help out or comment. - Jeff Rapps #ambystoma #ambystomamavortium #ambystomamavortiumnebulosum #tigersalamader #arizonatigersalamander #westerntigersalamander #jeffrapps #ultimatedreamfish

Throughout most of South Dakota, you can find today's featured amphibian: the Western Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma mavortium). With the exception of the lower southeastern corner of the state, the Western Tiger Salamander has been spotted recently in every county of the Big Sioux River watershed. In the early spring, adult salamanders move to and from breeding habitats following heavy rains. Outside of this movement, Western Tiger Salamanders are seldom spotted as they are not only nocturnal, but they reside in burrows of other animals that exist near wetlands and prairies during the summer and winter months. They favor wetlands or ponds where large fish species are not present. Western Tiger Salamander larva resemble their adult versions with the exception of their external gills on either side of their neck. As adults, they are able to breathe air above water, but they may retain their gills if the conditions are unfavorable outside of the water. Adult Ambystoma mavortium may live up to 20 years and range from 15-22 cm in total length; making them the largest terrestrial salamander! Their coloring is highly variable in both color and pattern, and their habitat is very widespread throughout North America. This species is not widely studied, but Western Tiger Salamanders are capable of hybridization. Western Tiger Salamanders primarily feast on earthworms and insects, but they will also eat small frogs and baby mice. In their larval state, they are often sold as fishing bait; introducing them to new sites by anglers. #westerntigersalamander #aquaticlife #wildlifeofthebigsiouxriver #bigsiouxriver #bsrp #bigsiouxriverwatershed

Snorkeling a high mountain lake in Montana yielded a unique discovery - Barred Tiger Salamanders, frozen in time. In a handful of small lakes 7,000 feet up in the highlands just south of the Tobacco Root Mountains, live Montana’s very own axolotls. While not related to the subterranean amphibians of central Mexico, these salamanders are unique. They’re paedomorphs - foregoing metamorphosis into their terrestrial adult form and completing their life cycle underwater. Nonnative trout in a few of these lakes have extirpated the amphibians, but in this shallow, weedy, and noticeably fishless pond, they abound. Snorkeling a few feet off the reeds had me observing hundreds. #barredtigersalamander #westerntigersalamander #ambystomamavortium #axolotl #montana #axolotllakes

Official State Amphibian of Colorado: Western Tiger Salamander 🥰🥰

6/24/2023, 7:29:06 PM

#SeenOnSite Western tiger salamanders are primarily nocturnal. They are opportunistic feeders eating anything they can catch, including various insects, slugs, and earthworms. Tiger Salamanders inhabit areas near bodies of water, including damp forest areas, pine barrens, and arid plains, where the soil is easily burrowed. Tiger Salamanders are also known to occupy abandoned mammal and invertebrate burrows. They are primarily terrestrial as adults, but their juvenile larval stage is entirely aquatic, having external gills. Western Tiger Salamander fun facts! - Tiger salamanders can live for 14 years or more. - The tiger salamander population is stable. - Wetland loss, specifically vernal pools, is the greatest threat facing tiger salamanders. - Tiger salamanders lay eggs in vernal pools because they are free of fish that normally eat the eggs and larvae. Western tiger salamanders are the largest terrestrial salamanders in the world, and can grow up to 14” long! They spend their days in burrows, and come out at night for food and to breed. They breed in marshes and other water bodies, the babies have gills and usually will transform into air breathers by late summer if their first year, but the gills may linger if needed. They can live up to 20 years 🤯 and are Colorado’s official State Amphibian 🥳

Tony has been more secretive since moving into the new setup, but was kind enough to grace us with her presence today and was rewarded with some worms. Pretty sure she’s been hunting down the isopods in the setup though given how round she is… 😂. Jack, our little, previously emaciated, rehab tiger, will hopefully be moving in with Tony soon to the larger setup now that they’ve put on a lot of weight and have also grown quite a bit. Additionally, I have some other news pertaining to salamanders that I will be sharing soon, however, I want to wait a little bit until they’ve settled in more. So you’ll have to wait on that. 😉 • • • #tigersalamander #westerntigersalamander #ambystoma #ambystomamavortium #ambystomamavortiumdiaboli #salamander #axolotl #amphibian #bioactive #bioactivevivarium #bioactiveterrarium

Update on Tony’s setup and Tony. The plants all seem to be happy other than the rabbit’s foot fern behind the water feature, we’ll see if it comes back or not. Moss around the pond has really started to take off to my surprise and the oxalis had an initial die off of leaves but now is doing great. The pond itself also seems to be holding together, and I’m hopeful it will continue to become more stand as the plants establish and their root systems spread through it. Tony has been MIA for literally two weeks. Today though she poked her head out to see and me and happily accepted a worm. Just a bit of an adjustment period for her and this will hopefully be the start of her going back to her food begging self. • • • #tigersalamander #westerntigersalamander #graytigersalamander #salamander #ambystoma #ambystomamavortium #ambystomamavortiumdiaboli #amphibian #bioactive #bioactivevivarium #bioactiveterrarium #bioactiveterrarium #vivarium #terrarium #bioactivesetup #bioactiveenclosure

Tony seems to be enjoying herself after a week of adjusting to her new setup. Really was loving their new pond though, able to crawl around through the leaf litter and just poke her head out of the water like a tiny little crocodile. You’ll also notice she stirred up the substrate in her pond and turned it all cloudy… as long as she’s enjoying herself I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️. Still have to see long term how well the terrarium putty holds up around the pond, currently above the water line it’s doing great and should over time get better as the plants root themselves into it. Below the water line it does seem to erode, so that may need to be touched up in the future. • • • #ambystoma #ambystomamavortium #ambystomamavortiumdiaboli #tigersalamander #westerntigersalamander #barredtigersalamander #graytigersalamander #salamander #newt #amphibian #bioactive #bioactivevivarium #bioactiveterrarium #bioactivesetup #bioactiveenclosure #vivarium #terrarium #paludarium

Finally feel comfortable posting this guy since they’ve just started to come around. This is ‘Jack Skeleton’, another western tiger salamander, probably the gray or blotched subspecies or an intergrade between the two 🤷🏻‍♂️. Amanda and I ended up taking them in a couple months ago, they were recently morphed and have an obviously regenerated hand. They were also extremely emaciated to the point their hips, ribs, and spine were fully visible. We’ve only recently gotten them to start turning around and they’re now eating regularly and putting on weight. I do want to thank @salamanderwithasign for their help. Their advice seemed to be the trick that ignited Jack’s turn around and finally got them going down the path to recovery. For now they live at home with us and are in an extremely simplistic hospital setup, but the goal will be for them to move in with Tony after they put on more weight and grow a bit more. • • • #tigersalamander #westerntigersalamander #graytigersalamander #blotchedtigersalamander #ambystomamavortium #ambystomamavortiumdiaboli #ambystomamavortiummelanostictum #salamander #newt #molesalamander #amphibian #amphibiansofinstagram

Well, finally took the dive into photography. Didn’t think it was something I could actually afford (probably still can’t) but I was able to find an affordable and quality camera in my price range and yesterday got in my Canon 5D Mark II. Haven’t gotten a chance to get out with it yet, and I still need to still get some lenses, but decided to bring it to Aark today for a test run with some of the animal ambassadors in the Ed Center. Quickly learned that 1. Shooting through glass with the aquatics is rough 2. Some more Tony picture spam. After spending the first year in my care being a complete hermit, it’s been really nice to see him become a lot more personable and spend more time at the surface, rather than hidden away 24/7. After getting in to work yesterday I saw his head poking out of a the soil, and then upon seeing me he went ahead to spend the rest of the day either in his new water dish or sitting by the glass watching me. I guess a few hand feedings finally made it click that the big ape that walks around the room is actually nice to have around 😂 • • • #tigersalamander #westerntigersalamander #barredtigersalamander #ambystomamavortium #ambystomatigrinum #ambystoma #axolotl #ambystomamexicanum #salamander #amphibian

May have done some unintentional operant conditioning… So I have been working on rehab box turtle enclosures for Aark, as well as some other wood working projects, over the last several weeks in the Ed Center. Some how Tony the tiger salamander has linked me working on projects with getting worms… and now whenever I’m using power tools in the Ed Center Tony almost immediately appears at the front glass of his setup and begs until I feed him. Mind you this is from a salamander who typically goes weeks at a time without me actually seeing him (I drop food in his setup for him to hunt down on his own) to now making an appearance whenever a drill, sander, jigsaw, or miter saw goes off. Figure that one out 😂 • • • #tigersalamander #westerntigersalamander #barredtigersalamander #ambystomamaculatum #ambystoma #ambystomatigrinum #axolotl #salamander #molesalamander #amphibian

The creature featured in this week's free story from HIKE ROCKY magazine is the Western Tiger Salamander, Colorado's state amphibian (since 2012) and a "saturated species" in RMNP, although you may have never seen one. This piece includes a video of a "mud puppy" exploring the lake bed! From the story: "I spoke with Jonathan Lewis, Wildlife Response Technician and Bear Management, Amphibian, and Avian Programs Lead for RMNP. He explained that sometimes, the tiger salamander stays in this newt-like stage, “with external gills that look like a dragon” for its entire life. " 'The gills filter the oxygen from the water,' Lewis said, 'That way, they don't ever need to come up for air.' The ones who “choose to leave the wetlands” will mature further into the full-grown creature, more easily recognizable as a salamander. But these 'mud puppies' can grow up to a foot long and never leave the water." A theme I have noticed with water starters in that they are all semi-aquatic or amphibious animals, as well as being based on either weapons or fighter types (ie; Blastoise is a tank, Swampert is a wrestler, Inteleon is a spy). In this case I have taken the western tiger salamander, which is the state amphibian of Colorado, and put a literal spin on it by turning it into a stereotypical western cowboy. My Rokki region is based on the Rocky mountain states; Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado. #waterstarter #fakemon #pokémon #rockymountains #colorado #westerntigersalamander #startertheory #rokki_region #cowboys

It was such a glorious Fall in Rocky Mountain National Park this year, we don't want to forget about it, now that most of the leaves have been blown off the trees in the subalpine. Hikes In Rocky Mountain National Park included in this issue are to Lake of the Clouds, Sandbeach Lake, and the Bierstadt Lake Loop. Murray gives good arguments about why trekking poles are good for everyone hiking in Rocky, and demonstrates the proper way to use them. The Colorado Avian Research and Rehabilitation Institute has finished the fall owl-banding project and Scott reports on the results. There were so many outstanding photos submitted for this issue's Front Cover photo contest, so we've created a photo essay, Glorious Autumn, so we can include more of these stunning images in this edition. Did you know the Western Tiger Salamander is Colorado's state amphibian? And that they can be found in Lily Lake? A new contributor to our effort, Hilary Eichinger, examines some of the historic buildings that are supported by fundraising efforts from Rocky Mountain Conservancy; and, a summer resident of Estes Park who spent a lot of time in Rocky's backcountry wrote and illustrated a wonderful piece, "Backcountry Cuisine." This issue includes six videos, embedded straight into the content, which either supplement or provide more information on the subject at hand.
