Spring is so exciting when you’re a gardener. Every day something new is blooming. I’ve been VERY unsuccessful with strawberries 🍓 for years in my yard. If it wasn’t crummy plants 🌱 it was squirrels 🐿️ eating my fruits before they ripened. Last year I got new plants from @veseysseeds and put them in long pots on my porch… much more controllable conditions and guarded by my pooch. Admittedly, I didn’t do much to these guys before putting them to bed for winter and, lo and behold, they’re back and thriving!! There are lots of flowers and more to come. #nofilterneeded for my beautiful bleeding hearts that are blooming. Gardening is really hard. When we moved into our home 13 years ago, my front flowerbeds were already lovely. But I pulled everything out except the hostas because I wanted to make it my own. It’s been a lot of “live and learn” trying out new plants and flowers… what grows where, what gets along well with others, what’s too big or small or spreads, etc. I also really wanted things that bloomed throughout the spring and summer so I always had colourful flowers. I finally feel like my garden is getting close to what I want it to be. Tonight’s @hellofreshca meal was delicious cheesy stuffed chicken with sweet potato mash and salad. And, for the first time, we got a dessert kit, so I also made cranberry cheesecake bars. One thing I love about these kits is that we try new ingredients, like the chicken was stuffed with crispy onions, which were also sprinkled on the salad- such a yummy extra touch! This weekend was my son’s end of season hockey party and I love trying to make a fun themed cake. This one was triple what I did last year. I use cake mixes: they’re much easier when you’re making that many cakes, and I bought four cans of frosting because that’s easier too (and buying all these is much more cost efficient than making everything homemade). I printed out the team photo and cut out all the players and coaches. Sunday dinners are for nostalgia!! We make huge batches of my mom’s meat sauce and freeze them in dinner-sized portions, and when we made a sauce a few weeks ago I also made meatballs. The recipe is pretty simple (Italian breadcrumbs, an egg, parsley, and garlic powder) and comes from an Italian neighbor we were friends with when I lived in Florida. My mom used to make these meatballs when she’d make her sauce, and then she’d turn them into these amazing subs. My job allows me to do amazing things, like today when I met Teddy, a rescue pup from @gerdysrescue, which is the latest charity we’re profiling as part of The Suburban’s Community Spotlight series. Today we dyed Easter eggs. We used chicken eggs and also quail eggs for the first time. We tried tie-dye eggs in addition to standard dye tablet eggs- we wrapped an egg in damp felt and put it in a plastic egg holder that we poked holes into. Then we used an eyedropper to add the colours. Even though he turns 11 this week, I’m glad he still asked to do Easter 🐣 eggs. Side note: it took 10 days to get these done… the bean had pneumonia last week but had a window of energy one day and had asked to do Easter eggs. By the time I’d hard boiled them, he was feeling crummy. We finally coloured them today. The bean made one. In lieu of a big party my almost 11-year-old opted for a sleepover with his two best friends. We gave them the living room and set up three mattresses, I created a drink and snack bar, and we went to a VR place in the morning. My hubby made these incredible crab 🦀 cakes and rice 🍚 balls. DELICIOUS! I love a good crab cake with lots of fresh finely diced veggies. And although he’d never made the rice balls, they were incredibly scrumptious- it was like a ball of warm creamy risotto with Italian sausage, tomato sauce and mozzarella in the middle, then coated in Italian breadcrumbs and fried. Our house is older and very lived in. Once the bean was of school age and wasn’t as destructive we painted our main floor (entryway, living room and hallway) and got new living room furniture. The kitchen, which is also our eating area, hadn’t been painted since we moved in 13 years ago. So, when I quit smoking two months ago, I started little projects to update our decor. I didn’t want it to cost a lot of money… I just wanted things to look refreshed. I started by lining drawers and cupboards in the kitchen and bathroom. Then I painted the three walls in our eating area. Then those baseboards. Then the rest of the kitchen and bathroom baseboards. I created a little collage wall in the kitchen on a freshly painted wall (I bought little frames at the dollar store and put in sayings I found online, and I painted wooden spoons also from the dollar store). I painted the kitchen window frame and two facing cupboard walls and cut and hung all the herbs we grew in our indoor grower. It’s a never ending cycle where you do things and then notice other things. I’m completing two more projects (posts to come) I’m in the middle of, but I’ve retired my paintbrush and painters tape till fall. I’ll keep a list of other projects but need to pace myself or I’ll never finish. I’m happy to have gotten done what I did. Something has come over me and I’m on this “update my house in a pinch” kick. Here’s the short version: I quit smoking two months ago and in preparation for it, I had made a list of bigger house projects I could work on to keep busy. One was getting shelf liner. I lined two bathroom drawers and they looked so pretty I went back to the dollar store the next day and bought five more rolls. While I was there I also saw rolls of thin foam liner, which I bought and used in my mug and glassware cupboards. I shelf lined my entire kitchen as well as my bathroom medicine cabinet. Then I thought, why stop there? So I got a small paintbrush and painted scuffed baseboards. I used leftover living room paint and repainted three walls in the dining area of my kitchen. I painted the kitchen entryway and window sill. I painted two built-in shelves in the kitchen. I painted wooden spoons and designed my own framed sayings and created a collage wall in the kitchen. This weekend I’m refacing the bathroom cupboards - I have paint samples from @behrpaint and I’m adding drawer pulls and cabinet knobs I bought today at @homedepotcanada. I’m not going to sugar coat it: we are a family who LOVES meat. I don’t think any of us could give it up completely. But we are adventurous eaters and cooks, and a few weeks ago my husband bought tofu. It sat in the fridge for awhile and one night, he used a pack of chicken thighs to make fried rice and added small diced squares of tofu. We all loved it, especially the consistency of the tofu. It actually gave us the courage to now try strictly veggies and tofu for our next fried rice. I’ve replaced one addiction (cigarettes) with another: cappuccinos and cinnamon rolls. I made another batch yesterday because I’d run out of them the day before and panic was setting in. I ate two last night. I woke up randomly at 4am and laid there a solid five minutes contemplating whether I should get up and eat one more or stay cozy in bed. I chose the latter. They say too much of a good thing is not a good thing. That’s not true when it comes to cinnamon rolls. They’re good for breakfast or lunch, as an afternoon snack or for dessert. I posted about my excitement of FINALLY mastering a delicious cinnamon roll a few days ago, ate 2-3 a day, and froze the rest individually in plastic bags. Now each night, I take one out of the freezer after dinner and devour it with a strong decaf coffee. I look forward to it every day lol. My 10yo has always wanted to go to a spa and today we went to @botabotamtl. We took an amazing class on massage therapy as part of their March Break activities and then spent time doing their water circuit. The spa is built on a boat and spans four storeys. In our household, I’m the baker and my husband is the cook. He can barbecue and make roasts and gravies and risotto, and I’m pretty good at cookies, brownies, and cakes. For the first time ever my hubby decided to try baking bread this afternoon. And wouldn’t you know: he nailed it! Two huge warm baguettes that co were crispy on the outside and perfectly light and fluffy inside. Is it just me or does it feel really freeing and awesome to organize? I’d bet money that there’s been scientific research that proves being organized is good for your mental health. It gives you more order, it helps eliminate clutter, it’s cleaner, and it helps make life easier. Organization is also annoyingly contagious 😂 so first I was going to tidy up my baking cupboard and then I was re-sorting thousands of sprinkles, which somehow led to organizing drawers, which turned into me lining my drawers. Phew 😮💨. I’m much too overjoyed every time I open a drawer. And why the hell do we accumulate so much junk and duplicates?! I had four spatulas. I’m obsessed these days with organizing. My professional organizer friends constantly inspire me. Yesterday I tore apart my kitchen (but in a good way): I reorganized my baking cupboard. I had TONS of sprinkles in individual bags which got piled and then would topple over. So into mason jars and these cool vials they went (I told my hubby six years ago that I’d use those vials lol). My hubby does the groceries (I LOATHE grocery shopping) but he likes when I write out the list because I write it in order of the store. Today I sent him off with a list and the last item said, “gift for wife.” I was in my office recording a radio spot for The Suburban (for CJAD800) when he got home and when I came out he told me to check the fridge for a present 🎁. He got me an entire key lime pie. Other than pecan and cherry, key lime pie has been a favourite of mine since growing up in Florida. I’ve had recipes for it saved on Pinterest for years but can never make it because I can never find key limes. Needless to say, this one is soooo delicious. I love the thick graham cracker crust and the sweet but tangy and creamy filling. The little florets of whipped cream are sweet and balance the key lime. I think my favourite thing to make, like, ever is bread. There’s something so special about a food that has been made with the same five basic ingredients since forever and it never changes. It’s the best, homey-est smell on the planet. The dough is so fun to make and knead and play with. Tonight we had spaghetti and meat sauce for dinner (good… but repetitive), so I decided to make homemade garlic knots. The longest part of any bread recipe is all the different rising times, but the hands-on prep work is just minutes. And there’s really nothing like homemade bread.
