Sometimes things don’t always go to plan.. Most of our cows would calve by the selves (hopefully) out at pasture; normally a calf would come out front feet first, however this little girl was coming bottom first! This meant the heifer (first time mum cow) wasn’t going to be able to calve by her own without a helping hand or two. This is where Meg (our cow expert) put her skills to work, with the heifer safely constrained Meg had to insert both arms and push the calf as far back into the uterus as possible then try with all her might to bring the back legs up and out before the bum (if that makes sense) anyway by shear dedication Meg was able to do this and we calved her backwards (back feet first instead of front feet first). As the calf was coming backwards when the umbilical cord broke (once the calves hips were out) the calf’s head was still in the uterus and so it starting to try and breath taking in uterine fluid instead of air. When we eventually got the calf out it was really struggling to breathe with fluid blocking it’s air ways, we hung it upside down, swung it round in circles, poked straw up its nose to make it sneeze, we tried all the old tricks and it was still seriously struggling, we thought we were going to lose it, until Meg literally started giving it mouth to mouth, I was trying to resuscitate it and I could feel it’s lungs expanding with Meg’s breath. Guess what IT WORKED! We got it breathing and saved its little life, I say we but it was really all thanks to the true dedication of Meg.. I married a good one there! Our girls watched the whole thing, what an amazing lesson to learn from your mother. This could have easily been a sad story and sometimes there are sad stories in farming but not this one! Within less than an hour it was up and suckling from its mum getting that all important colostrum, and what a great first time mum (heifer) she is! 🌙 The beginnings of a dead hedge fence for my garden. This season, we are borrowing some free-roaming neighbour cows to clear the land that we can’t get to. Despite what the internet says, I have discovered that cows will happily eat garlic plants (and everything else!) so needless to say, building a fence has been a necessity. Dead hedges are economically and ecologically friendly, because they are made of fallen trees, branches and dead wood that would normally be burned or taken to the dump. They not only create a barrier, but provide habitat for birds, amphibians and small mammals. Once complete, I will grow wildflowers along the border to provide further food and shelter for my animal friends. Already, I’ve seen birds perching on the birch poles. As you can see, I’m nowhere near finished as I’ve also discovered that calves will jump over fences if given the opportunity, so I will need to spend some time over the next couple of days collecting more wood and building the fence higher. As much as I’ve resented having to chase the cows away from my garden and losing a few garlic plants, I’m also grateful that they have given me an excuse to get off the couch and get on the land. While looking for dead wood, I’ve discovered so many little corners of the land that I didn’t see before and it feels SO GOOD to work in harmony with the earth, using natural materials to create something so rustic and beautiful. ❤️

Happy Earth Day Everyone! Part of our mission at Gretta's Goats is to inspire & educate others about sustainable and humane farming practices. The baby goats always help to bring people to the farm in the spring. It's a win-win for both human and baby goat as folks get to relax and connect with nature while holding a sweet little one and the babies get to be held/pet and socialized. The socialization helps for if /when they need veterinary care/hoof trimming/milking, etc. no need to stress the goat out and chase as they are just that much more friendly. It brings peace to the animal and the person visiting us. Study after study has shown that holding and petting any animal helps to reduce blood pressure and cortisol levels. 👋🏾 My name is Angelina, I’m South Sudanese and I grow cassava 🍠 because I’ve come to realize it’s an excellent food source. Cassava is resilient, thriving even in dry seasons. I use cassava leaves to make a sauce for my children. Sometimes, I dry the leaves 🍃 , grind them into flour, and cook with it. When times are tough, I also use the cassava root. In June, I plan to plant cassava in another part of my garden that isn’t affected by flooding, unlike groundnut 🥜and sorghum 🌾. Cassava is a durable crop that provides food all year round. Although I also grow sorghum and groundnut, they were destroyed by floods, so now I rely solely on cassava, as I have no other options and no support from anyone; my husband is elderly. Last year, we managed a good harvest of groundnut before the floods, but this year, everything was ruined. If there’s a drought, we’ll still grow cassava since it’s planted on higher ground, safe from floodwaters. The cash assistance from WFP was a lifeline after our crops were devastated by the floods.
