2.10 - Happy 37th Bday to Public Enemy’s 1987 debut LP (Def Jam), “Yo! Bum Rush The Show”! Chuck D and Flavor Flav were students at Long Island’s Adelphi University in the early 1980’s when they teamed up on Chuck’s college radio show at WBAU. They eventually formed their own crew, Spectrum City, and released a single in 1984. Rick Rubin became obsessed with signing the group to Def Jam and pursued Chuck D for a few years before he finally relented. The group’s name, Public Enemy, came from a song title on a mixtape that Chuck D had released in Long Island. As a group, Public Enemy would consist of Chuck, Flavor, Terminator X and their producers Hank Shocklee and Eric Sadler. “Yo! Bum Rush The Show” is a peek in the box of who PE was and what they would become. The album’s production is fairly stripped down, but, the empty spaces create their own sort of eerie vibe. The Bomb Squad had not yet perfected the multi-sample layering and dense musical tapestry that would become their trademark, but, the early seeds can be found on “Yo! Bum Rush The Show”. Lyrically, Chuck and Flavor alternate between battle rhymes and politically conscious songs. Again, their lyrics were subtle compared to what would come next, but, Public Enemy was still miles ahead of many of their peers in 1987 when it came to socially conscious hip hop. Even Flav was not quite the royal jester of hip hop that he would soon become as he makes an honest attempt at pretty straight forward MC’ing on songs like “Too Much Posse” and “Megablast”. “Yo! Bum Rush The Show” is an outstanding album that was under appreciated at the time of its release, but, has gained a lot of respect in the years since. The two commercial singles for this album were “Public Enemy #1” and “You’re Gonna Get Yours/Miuzi Weighs A Ton”. On their second and last single, PE gave the world a peak at the group’s future with the B-side song (technically side F on the single), “Rebel Without A Pause”.
