Sus orígenes se remontan a la década de los 70, cuando se juntaba en parques y corrillos con otros chavales de su edad donde jugaban a hacer rimas, juego que se le daba especialmente bien. Todo ello, mucho antes de que se produjeran las primeras grabaciones de rap a finales de la década. Su tío y tutor "Bobby Robinson" fue un visionario que montó una exitosa tienda de discos en Harlem, cerca de la discoteca Apollo, y creó además sellos discográficos que apostaban por los géneros que estaban en auge. Spoonie, que en inglés significa cuchara (apodo basado en que la cuchara era el único cubierto que utilizaba de niño para comer), fue uno de los primeros en grabar un tema en un disco, nada menos que en 1979. Su título fue "Spoonie's Rap". Esto se produjo tras la visita del productor Peter Brown a la tienda de discos de Robinson, mencionando que estaba interesado en hacer un disco de rap. Spoonie fue además uno de los miembros iniciales de "The Threacherous Three", pero en seguida dejó el grupo, siendo sustituido por Special K. A pesar de ello, siempre guardo con ellos muy buena relación. De hecho con ellos grabó su segundo maxi " The New Rap Language / Love Rap" bajo "Enjoy Records", el sello de su tío Robinson. Al poco fichó por "Sugarhill", grabando los maxis "Monster Jam" con " The Sequence", y "Spoonie is Back". Cabe decir que en esos primeros 80, grabar un álbum no era algo por lo que se apostarse aún, y se estiraba más el grabar un sencillo de éxito. Tras unos cuantos maxis más en los años siguientes, ya en 1987 por fin graba éste, su único álbum "The Godfather Of Rap", con el tema principal que le da nombre al disco y que es un hit universalmente conocido. El disco está producido por Aarón Fuchs y Marley Marl.

His music was a fusion of Jazz, Blues, R&B, Folk, Rap, Soul and Neo Soul. His lyrical content focused on the social and political issues of the time. Gil was deep with his words, infectious with his message and smoothe with his delivery. He referred to himself as "Bluesologist", which he defined as "a scientist who is concerned with the origin of the blues. In doing so, Gil organically created his own unique sound and style. Very reminiscent to dynamic poets of The Harlem Renaissance. His personal influence on the sounds of both for Neo-Soul and Rap music are second to none. Gil's non compromising, hard-hitting, no-nonsense street poetry inspired a legion of conscious rappers to follow his lead. Recommend. The story of performer Rudy Ray Moore, who assumed the role of an iconic pimp named Dolemite during the 1970s. Starring the brilliant Eddie Murphy in this comedy drama with a big heart that’s based on a true story. It also has a great supporting cast including Wesley Snipes, Keegan-Michael Key and Chris Rock.
