This beautiful man, Pepe the spectacled owl, came in because he had some respiratory problems. He had a quick anaesthetic with sevoflurane in oxygen, a blood sample taken from his basilic vein and had a couple of X-rays. The X-rays showed several abnormalities unfortunately which I will post in the next few days but weโre just awaiting his blood results. Isnโt he beautiful! Last night we were contacted about baby screech owls whose tree had fallen and nest had been destroyed. The finder followed all directions beautifully in attempts to reunite them with the parents but in the end, given the circumstances of their situation, it was safest if they sought refuge with a licensed rescue. We collaborated with Carolina Wildlife Rehabilitation Center and they will be taking over their care tomorrow once transported. This weekend our members had the opportunity to listen in and participate in a wetlab focused on Pinniped Medicine by @readyzack! Dr. Ready is a current resident at the University of Illinois working at the Shedd Aquarium, a PUCVM Alumni and a former Exotic's Club Member. Friday was my last leaving do from Manor Exotics Vets and what an emotional one it was ๐ฅน! Thank you to everyone who came and to the people who came to both leavings dos (sorry about me ๐). I started working at Manor in 2015 straight after graduating Uni, a very nervous and newly qualified veterinary nurse. However everyone made me feel so welcome and I soon settled into the Manor Family ๐. How many hooks can you see? ๐ข โcontent may be graphic for some viewersโ There has been a huge increase in the number of hook and fishing tackle related injuries over the last month. Almost every day we admit an animal that has a hook injury, ingested a hook or become entangled in discarded fishing line. ๐ฃ There are a few things you can do to make your fishing practices responsible! ๐ take away any tackle and discard appropriately ๐ donโt cast your line in an area where birds or other animals are congregating ๐ donโt feed wild animals in areas where fishing occurs - this encourages them to congregate and puts them at risk of ingestion of hooks ๐ if you do hook an animal - DONโT CUT THE LINE โ it is ALWAYS a better outcome for the animal when dealing with acute injuries and ingestion. โ CONTENT WARNING โ Letโs talk about responsible fishing practices. ๐ We see an over representation of cases coming in to @currumbinwildlifehospital with trauma related to discarded fishing tackle. ๐ฃ This can be anything from line ingestion and entanglements, lead poisoning from sinkers, and the varying injuries from hooks. These are usually chronic, catastrophic injuries by the time we see them, unable to be saved. This is because our wildlife species are tough. They will keep going until they canโt. ๐ข This darter arrived with a hook firmly lodged in her mouth. It wasnโt until we looked at the radiographs that we saw just how devastating this injury was. It had almost penetrated the base of the cranium and into the brain ๐ข unfortunately, there was no way we could remove this hook without causing further damage. This bird was also emaciated, which indicated that she had been unable to feed herself for quite some time. The importance of multiple views! ๐ฑ These X-rays are from a crow who was admitted for being unable to fly. ๐ข the right shoulder was slightly thickened on palpation and had reduced range of motion. You can see in the first view that there is some swelling of the shoulder and sclerosis of the humeral head, but everything seems to otherwise be in place. The next view is an โAngel wingโ view with the wings extended above the head. You can see the large fracture through the humeral head! Spent the afternoon tracking koalas as part of our vaccine trial! ๐ For the trial, healthy koalas from the Elanora region close to the hospital have been vaccinated and released with radio tracking and gps collars. Our aim is to catch up these koalas every 6 months to assess the efficacy of the vaccination. Have you ever wondered what a wildlife vet does? ๐จ๐ธ๐ฆ โMy day runs pretty much like this but no two days are ever the same! In the morning we do our checks on all the patients already in hospital and update their medications and plans ๐ ๐ฉบ at the moment we have about 70 animals staying in the hospital at any one time โผ๏ธ We then do our procedures for our patients in hospital, which can range from x-rays to complex surgeries, including ex-laps, gastrotomies and fracture repair๐ฉธ While all this is happening, we also have brand new patients arriving all day! Many have unfortunately suffered from trauma and then during their work up found to also have chlamydia. Most of these koalas will be in hospital for well over 2 months. Marley got released today! ๐คฉ๐ฅฐ This special boy has touched my heart many times over the last 2 months of his treatment โค๏ธ he arrived @currumbinwildlifehospital thin and suffering from terrible cystitis due to chlamydia. Little Peanut ๐ฅฐ Peanut and his mum, Brittle, came in a few months ago as his mum had unfortunately contracted chlamydia ๐ข To treat a koala for chlamydia takes a minimum of 6 weeks and costs roughly $7000. This is only if it is an uncomplicated case. Not uncommonly, koalas also present with other problems such as acute trauma from cars or dogs ๐ข Since Iโve started at @currumbinwildlifehospital , these guys have become one of the most heart breaking species for me to treat. ๐ They each have their own unique personality and are such sweet animals ๐ฅฐ Spending 6 weeks seeing an animal almost every day means that you do form an emotional connection to them and their outcomes. ๐ I absolutely celebrate each and every release that we are able to do and feel so grateful to be in a position to help them ๐ฅฐ๐จ
