I typically get 2 types of responses to my long posts talking about what I went through mentally as a teen. The first one is “oh you’re just saying those things for sympathy” and the second one is people telling me I inspire them to be themselves…but I get asked how I did it. How I got from where I was to where I am now…and the answer is, I think it came with age. As a teen I was so wrapped up in what other people thought of me I was just in this constant state of wanting to please people. But by the time I hit 21, I got fed up with it. I started to slowly realize what I had become in the past 7 years. It wasn’t that I had become a carbon copy of all the other influencers out there myself, I edited my pictures until I looked like one…and then I would sit in the mirror and look at myself. Then the picture I edited. Then the mirror. Then the picture I edited. It’s a weird feeling to not recognize yourself anymore, but I didn’t. I had no part of my actual self to grasp onto anymore because I was too far gone…and as a teen, I was okay with being too far gone. In fact, once I was deep into that mindset my brain didn’t even want to think positive thoughts anymore. I wanted to be left alone to be miserable to be completely honest. I couldn’t be myself, but I also couldn’t be those other girls because, well, I don’t look like them. I started wanting surgeries and fillers so I looked like a Kardashian and let me tell you, that’s a dark road to go down. That’s not a road a 16 year old needs to go down. You have to at least try to LIKE yourself in your own skin otherwise you’ll be stuck in a dangerous cycle. To the people that say I do it for sympathy, I promise you I don’t. I’m doing this to try to tell teens out there not to go where I went. Not to do what I did. Because it wrecked me…for almost a decade it wrecked me. I genuinely think the hardest question I’ve had to process in therapy was the ole “who WERE you?” I got asked this very early on because as most of you know by now, the main reason why I’m even in therapy is because I’ve struggled with being able to be myself. When I was little, I had no effs to give about who was…who I TRULY was. I was the weird girl who always wore obnoxious colors, listened to Weird Al and watched Pee wee Herman. I was the girl who while everyone else’s favorite songs were by Britney Spears or Avril Lavigne, my favorite songs were Bohemian Rhapsody and Piano Man. I vividly remember how damn excited I would get any time either of those songs came on the radio and how magical it felt to me. I was the girl that had a very old soul. If you watched my video last night, then you know that part of the advice I gave was not to try to become an influencer when you’re 14 years old and I will stand behind that. I just wanted to share things I loved and I didn’t know the price I would pay for that. If I had known, I probably wouldn’t have started that young. Or maybe I would have bc I was dumb af and just wanted people to like me lmao. I wasn’t aware of how mean people were capable of being. I didn’t know people would rip that magic I felt hearing those songs away from me for years because I would dissociate any time I heard them come on because I didn’t want to even associate myself with that music anymore. That little girl with the old soul was told she was weird, she was told she was a freak, she was told that she was mentally ill…and so I hid her away and my brain hid those memories away with her…until my therapist asked “who WERE you?” I’ll never forget watching Pee wee for the first time after she asked me that. I’ll never forget watching the Like A Surgeon video for the first time after she asked me that. I’ll never forget hearing Bohemian Rhapsody for the first time after she asked me that…or hearing Piano Man. The memories came back. The magic came back.
