R.I.P my beloved Aunty Elaine, who died suddenly this week, and will leave a huge hole in our family. Aunty was an inspiration; travelling the world, constantly seeking knowledge and experiences. She had an appetite for adventure and visited many countries including China, Russia, Costa Rica, and accidentally booked a holiday to Bethlehem, deciding to go anyway, in her 80s! She brought back weird and wonderful souvenirs from her many travels. She studied Zoology and Occupational Therapy, volunteering at Whipsnade Zoo, where she enjoyed educating children about the insect world. She still had a small allotment plot, gardened constantly, recycled voraciously and loved cooking with her own produce, possibly the secret of her longevity! She famously had a ‘cast iron stomach’ and wasn’t restricted by sell or use by dates; I once found her eating particularly dark marmalade, which had been made by my great aunt, about 2 decades prior! She cultivated plant cuttings and seed pods galore, and knew the name of every tree, bird, hill and flower on country walks. A lively and entertaining companion, lifelong National Trust member, rambler, chorister and keen birdwatcher, with no patience for buses, she chose to walk wherever possible, only recently giving up her car, aged 90. She weathered several operations and health scares stoically, had a huge appetite for music & culture, trying to persuade me to attend lectures on the most obscure topics! She was fiercely independent, resisting the family’s attempts to persuade her to have carers. I realise I am beyond lucky to have had her company for so long, but will miss her massively. I travelled South this week in the hopes of saying goodbye, so my pop-up shop prep is two days behind schedule. I’ll be opening today, but please pop in later in the week, too, as I have more stock to price up, and finishing touches to complete! Goodbye, Norma Jean was established in 2009, when I came back from a year’s vintage picking in Vancouver. 🇨🇦 I had my first stall at Manchester’s Student Union in the early 2000s, after sourcing deadstock Burberry caps woven at Failsworth Mill in North Manchester, followed by a shop in an indoor market on Carlisle’s Botchergate, (complete with Marilyn Monroe mural and rubber warehouse-door fitting room), monthly pop-ups at @foxescafelounge , and a spot at @warwickbazaarshop . Now I travel around the country to vintage fairs and events, sell online and pop up when I can- it’s a luxury to set up for over a week in my home town, catch up with regular customers and neighbours, and meet tourists and Carlisle ex-pats, home for the holiday! North African heavy metal! This rare, Brutalist-looking Tuareg bangle weighs in at a serious 405g! Cast in solid 900 silver, it’s a truly tactile object, imbued with mystery and magic. Hullabaloo! A treat of a sunny weekend in Kingston upon Hull, trading at @loulousvintagefair in the glorious Hull Minster, with its spectacular windows and stonework. Loads going on there! Manifesting Spring with these milk glass daisy necklaces from West Germany, and a celluloid Pheasant Eye narcissus brooch. I loved @amelia_wright9843 ‘s Princess Di era hedgehog sweater from the stall! It was fun meeting the friendly folks of Hull, who gave us top tourist tips, and hanging out with fab traders and my lovely sis- we watched Elvis in Hawaii in our Psycho-esque motel, drank mojitos, visited @humberstreetgallery ‘s excellent exhibition You and Me in HU3, with photographs by @russellboycephotographer and @roving_eye_photographer_ , on until 14th April.📸. We ate at cool, former fruit market @thieving_harrys and @flourandfeast on Humber St, exploring the abundance of independent shops, interesting architecture and street art. “Doctor, I feel like a pair of curtains!” “Pull yourself together!” These long, lineny William Morris ‘Windrush’ curtains were designed in 1883, as part of a series inspired by the tributaries of the Thames. More complex than his earlier designs, the pattern boasts a combination of layered blooms and foliage, peony, lily and rose-like flowers and scrolling leaves in pink, black and burgundy. Sir Elton’s collection of photography is legendary; as of a recent count, the man has amassed about 7,000 photographs (many of which will make up an upcoming exhibition at the V&A Museum in London). @artnet . Well hello, dollies! These Barbie girl, kawaii kuties hail from the 1960s, when stylised, cartoony ‘Big Eye’ illustrations were a huge craze! Tim Burton’s 2014 Big Eyes film, exploring the bizarre true story of Margaret Keane’s husband taking credit for his wife’s art is well worth a watch! The artist was Gallarda, who produced a lot of commercial art for greetings cards in Spain. Paging all plant parents! Jack Dadd for Hornsea plant pot, in greeny greige, with dark brown pattern and cream interior, from 1976. This ‘Beaded’ design was said to resemble a bead curtain (which look great, but in reality get stuck on your earrings, hair, dinner, eh, @easy_tiger_vintage ?! ). Jack Dadd famously designed a funky, newsprint-like ‘Zoo’ range of animal mugs for Hornsea during his tenure from 1970-1977, and his work is often confused with that of John Clappison, whose work is also super cute, and highly collectable- I’m currently selling some JC pottery people (see link to my Ebay!). Love this jazzy little pot, which stands 8.5cm or 3.35” high. Thanks to @cblc76 for lending me the plant cuttings and minimalist interior, and Paulo Nutini for the tune (soooo good live, must google his next tour!). Aye aye! Who can resist an antiques centre?! I was driving back from the Belfast to Cairnryan ferry, when I was diverted to this little Aladdin’s Cave; Glenluce Antiques Centre, Newton Stewart, DG8 OLF. They weren’t actually open, but very kindly opened up for me to nosey around on New Year’s Day. They have a high quality selection of authentic antiques from around the world- paintings, sculptures, signage, plus weird and wonderful curios, jewellery, textiles, furniture, garden ornaments, lighting- I love the Pinewood Studios lamp! I found a Portuguese cockerel to add to my collection, but fell in love with a fab, Lalique style, Art Nouveau lampshade with cherries on it. Luckily I have run out of lamps that need shades! Knowledgeable owner Chris and I yakked on about things we have bought and sold, as vintagey folk do, they’re on Facebook, and trade at big antique fairs like Newark, too. “You lookin’ at me?“ Dungaree-clad People figures by the wonderful John Clappison for Hornsea. These unglazed and unfazed kids are pretty rare, produced in the early 80s. I love their Playpeople-esque, helmet style hairdos, and cute flares! The poor fella has lost his head at some stage, not my repair job, nothing a little scarf won’t fix!? Around 7” tall, they have no other chips or cracks, just the odd speckle in the clay. A nice gift for a Clappison enthusiast, they look great in a 1970s interior. The first thing I did with them was made them kiss.
