NATIONAL TREASURE writers: Jim Kouf, Cormac Wibberley, Marianne Wibberley director: Jon Turteltaub NATIONAL TREASURE finds Nicolas Cage doing his best Harrison Ford (or is it Tom Cruise?), running, jumping, swimming, and driving from location to location trying to link vague clues about a possible treasure map hidden on the back of the Declaration of Independence (and heretofore unknown by anyone else in the world). I'd honestly never seen this movie until recently with the kids for a family movie night. It's enjoyable, if a bit dated. As with basically all films of this subgenre, the plot itself is a gobbledygook device to ferry the actors from one location and setpiece to the next. The type of movie where an actor will step to the edge of a harbor, talk into an earpiece to the FBI Director about "just trust me," and then jump into the river to evade capture. The screenplay is efficient, but also a bit odd at times. Nicolas Cage and Diane Kruger have an awkward enemies-to-lovers thing going which borders on misogynistic early in the film, and I guess we're supposed to buy the romance because they both like history and puzzles? Then Jon Voight, who plays Cage's father, starts off highly skeptical of Cage's latest adventure, but turns on a dime to accepting and then aiding and abetting him as the film goes along. It moves quickly and does exactly what it wants to do, so there isn't much time to dwell on these issues. It's overall a fun (if empty) romp. On a warm Atlanta Friday afternoon in November, I just got out of my day at Kindergarten, where my mom would take me to see a special movie that I’ve been anticipating for a year now since I’ve seen my first glimpse of the film on my Toy Story 2 VHS, that’s right, it’s no other than Pixar’s Monsters Inc at the General Cinema on Parkway Pointe. We’ve arrived pretty much a half hour before showtime was expected to start as we had plenty of time to grab some popcorn and Coca Cola(which yes, GCC switched from Pepsi to Coca-Cola products), and it was a bit of a line, but we got to our seats around ten minutes before showtime as quite a few showed up a bit earlier than us, but that didn’t matter, a ton of people were coming through the Movie Tunes pre show music and then the previews, mostly kids and their parents. Then following the hilarious short, For the Birds, it was showtime, and.., like many kids around this time, I loved Monsters Inc, which is saying a lot because it’s been rave reviews, and honestly, I liked it more than Shrek, where Monsters Inc was a perfect movie for kids and families, where it has witty writing, memorable jokes, unforgettable characters, and some of the most creative and revolutionary animation for the time, where I felt like I was in the world of Monsters.
