Happy 82nd Birthday to Barbra Streisand! Instead of talking about one of her huge hits, let’s talk about one of the weirder works in her career. The plot to On A Clear Day You Can See Forever is wild, but fascinating. Basically, Daisy goes to see a hypnotist to get her to stop smoking, and instead reveals that she can make plants grow by talking to them. So Dr. Bruckner hypnotizes her and discovers that she is actually the reincarnated 18th century lady Melinda. Bruckner falls in love with Melinda, and Daisy falls in love with Dr Bruckner who keeps hypnotizing her to be with Melinda. It’s a trip. And yet, the cast album is delightful, filled with beautiful lilting melodies by Burton Lane and some of lyricist Alan Jay Lerner’s best work. “Hurry It’s Lovely Up Here” has some of the sweetest rhymes you’ll ever hear. The movie version starred Barbra Streisand in the role created onstage by Barbara Harris. Barbara, please… The movie was successful, despite getting mixed reviews, because its songs are so infectious. On the title song, Barbra’s voice is simply luminous. Of course, Barbra’s work in Funny Girl, Hello, Dolly!, What’s Up, Doc?, A Star Is Born and Yentl is unmatched. While she is often considered a huge Broadway star, she only actually did two shows on Broadway: I Can Get It For You Wholesale, and Funny Girl. She’s also on the Off-Broadway album of a revival of Pins & Needles, a charming pro-union musical revue. Quvenzhané Wallis (Born on August 28, 2003) is an African American actress and author. In 2012, she starred as Hushpuppy in Beasts of the Southern Wild, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. She became the youngest actress to be nominated in that category, as well as the first person born in the 21st century nominated for an Oscar. Twelve years later she still holds both of these records. At her audition Wallis, who was just five years old at the time(even though the casting call had been for girls between six and nine) beat out 4,000 other actresses. She impressed the filmmakers with her reading skill, tremendous scream, and her ability to burp on command, all of which are used in the film. The #genie from #disneyaladdin has nothing to do with the #stevenspielberg film #hook - unless he can maybe make it an actual good movie... 🙄 I've never liked the overstuffed, too big, Trying Too Hard To Be Magical #peterpan epic, but when #lalalandrecords issued a 3 CD set of the complete #johnwilliams score, I had to grab it during their 25% off sale. It's Williams, so of course it soars and is impeccably written, but it's always felt like it tries too hard, but that's a given since the movie is designed to be BIG and was even conceived as an all out #moviemusical ( the discarded songs are included on disc three) . There's a few really spectacular passages, beautiful, lyrical music that even thirty years later outshine a lot of today's #moviesoundtracks , so I'm open to trying it again and at the sale price how could it not be mine? 🤪😵💫🤷 As usual with @lalalandrecords , the packaging is drop dead gorgeous, with two booklets of in-depth liner notes. The sound is crystal clear, the whole set is clearly a labor of love. In 1934's Bottoms Up, a blonde Lucille Ball, in one of her first screen appearances, appeared as a showgirl seen in the film’s climactic “Waitin’ at the Gate for Katy” production number. 40 years later, she had a remarkably similar look in the Georgia sequence in Mame, her final big screen film. On the topic of fashion, during the filming of Bottoms Up, Lucy received one of her earliest newspaper column spotlights. In his January 21, 1934 column, the Los Angeles Times' Philip K. Scheuer attributed the following to model-turned-show girl Lucille Ball: "I'm proudly speaking out of turn, but I have some ideas on the subject of Hollywood beauty and Hollywood style, and I'm going to express them. Hollywood girls, for the most part, do not know how to dress. They think in terms of sport clothing -- and few women can wear such styles to advantage. In plain language, most Hollywood girls do not know how to buy, for the stores are full of attractive outfits. If you think this isn't true, then why do the producers have to go to New York looking for show girls? Why did Mr. De Sylvia spend weeks rounding up girls for 'Bottoms Up'?"
