Billy Joel 52nd Street, Lp Just like with The Stranger, I’m sure I’ll recognize more of these songs when I hear them. The opening track, “Big Shot,” I didn’t know was a Billy Joel song. I’ve always been a fan of it. Added bonus: it has horns! “Honesty,” I always thought might have been an Air Supply song. It’s kind of a snoozer for me. Three songs in, three songs that I didn’t realize were Billy Joel’s. I also did not remember that “My Life,” was the theme song to Bosom Buddies. “Zanzibar” feels like it could easily be blown up into a full on Broadway show. It’s all over the place, in a good way. The bridge on “Stiletto” is outstanding. I cant get into “Rosalinda’s Eyes.” “Half a mile away,” is fairly solid, with some great horns. There are moments that seem to flirt with disco, and that pushes me away. Billy Joel turns into a crooner on “Until the Night,” and I just don’t get it. It gets better towards the end; the bridge and final chorus are real good, and it stops just short of sounding like part of an epic. “52nd Street,” sounds like the opening track of a concept album. I’m not a huge fan; maybe if it kicked off the album and this was a reprise.

It was released in October of 1978 under Columbia Records and featured the four hit singles “My Life”, “Big Shot”, “Until the Night”, and “Honesty”. The album was a big change from his previous five releases and embraced more of a Chicago or Steely Dan jazz type sound. The title is a reference to 52nd Street in Midtown Manhattan which was a popular street performing location for jazz musicians from the 1920’s through the 1950’s. This scene in Billy Wilder’s The Seven Year Itch of Marilyn Monroe trying to hold down her white halter dress blown up by the draft of an uptown train coming up through a subway grate, was arguably one of the most famous and iconic (a much abused/overused word, but totally appropriate here) images of American cinema. When Monroe’s character, the ditzy glamour model only referred to as ‘The Girl’ cooed ‘Ooooh do you feel the breeze from the subway, isn’t it delicious’, minds of half the country were simultaneously blown. The reality though was rather different. As part of the publicity stunt, the location and the place of the filming were leaked to the press (and the public), resulting in thousands of people turning up to try to catch a glimpse of Monroe (and hopefully a bit more!). The resultant noice from the baying crowd made the shot unusable to Billy Wilder. The scene was later recreated later on a Hollywood set. But the publicity created the desired effect, and the photographs made on Lexington Avenue found their way onto the movie poster. These subway grates are located at the south west corner of the intersection between Lexington Avenue and E 52nd Street. (Second picture) Among the people watching this exhibitionist scene that evening was Monroe’s then husband Joe DiMaggio. He was not impressed, and the two had a blazing row back in the suite of their hotel. Weeks later Monroe filed for divorce. Billy Joel’s 1978 album 52nd Street was recorded, of all places, on 52nd Street. The studio the album was recorded in was quite worthy of song. Producing many iconic Frank Sinatra records and Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone,” 701 Seventh Avenue and 52nd Street was quite the hit factory before its close in 1989. Around the block from the old studio location is home of CBS, where Billy would have celebrated this album topping the billboard chart and earning two Grammy awards.
