Part of the reason I wanted to climb the 7 Summits from sea to sea was to have a real adventure. To experience the culture in places where tourists don't go. The 200km walk to the base of Aconcagua (and back) through rural Chile was filled with unique experiences. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa and one of the Seven Summits of the world. It is located in Tanzania, East Africa, and is a dormant volcanic peak that rises to an elevation of 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). The mountain is made up of three distinct volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is the highest of the three and is also the highest point on the African continent. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a popular activity for many adventurous travellers. The trek to the summit takes between 5 to 9 days, depending on the chosen route and the hiker's fitness level. Day 22 & 23 : C1 (6050m) to C2 (6500m) and Rest day at C2 The walk from Camp 1 to Camp 2 was neither too long nor too steep, but covered an appreciable height gain... We had to cross multiple crevasses in the highly glaciated Western Cwm, but the true tough part was getting from the first few tents of Camp 2 to our tents, which were at the other end of the camp! It was a much needed light-climbing day after a grueling climb through the icefall the previous day... We settled into the camp and took in the beautiful view of the Lhotse Wall, which we'd be climbing in two days time... Day 23 was a rest day at Camp 2 to recharge ourselves before two more days of hard climbing. I took the opportunity to play a good game of chess with a fellow teammate and was surprised that my brain was still functioning properly despite the altitude! It’s really happening now. Acclimatization rotations are done. We traversed the notorious Khumbu Icefall and reached camp 1, where we spent the night before moving on to Camp 2 at 6500m (21,323ft). We rested there for a day before waking early to head to the Lhotse Face. We reached just shy of 7000m on this ice wall that gives way to camp 3 just a few meters higher. Next day, We headed out of camp 2 at 4:30am and reach base camp some 4 hours and 45 minutes later after a grueling descent through the icefall. Everyone is tired but happy about what we’ve accomplished already. The next move will be to remain in an oxygen rich environment (Everest base camp or lower) to regain the strength we’ll need to make the final push to the summit of the world. Currently waiting on the rope fixing, and after that for good weather. Once all the final pieces are in place, we will leave base camp to begin the arduous process of doing everything in one’s power to attain the summit of Everest.
