Posting images from my 2015 encounter with Volcano Láscar in honor of Mount St. Helens eruption anniversary _ Hiked with four others to the 18k’ crater rim the day before Láscar’s eruption - still remember the smells and sounds emerging from that otherworldly pit while viewing the Andean Volcanic Belt beyond. Awaking the next morning to find Láscar spewing ash was bewildering. Equally phenomenal was an acquaintance sharing pictures of the eruption from their helicopter wondering if I was still on the mountain. Visiting Machu Picchu was easily one of the best experiences of my life 🇵🇪🦙 A few things that took me by surprise or that I learned during my trip: 🏔️The hike up to Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes was a lot more difficult than I anticipated. However, I was doing it at speed to reach the ruins before sun rise, and I was also at the end of the Salkantay Trek (@salkantaytrekking). I think going at a slower pace and being in a more well rested state might be a better idea!🤣 Luckily, there are also 30-45 minute shuttle bus options if you’d rather not walk. 🏔️I was really surprised by how empty it was if you got there early in the morning. But by 10 am, it was already super busy. 🏔️Although the Machu Picchu ruins are incredible, all of the surrounding scenery is also stunning. For some reason, I just didn’t anticipate to have 360° views of the beautiful Andes mountains and tropical forest. 🏔️There is some incredible wildlife in and around Machu Picchu, including andean pumas, jaguars, spectacled bears, monkeys, and sloths. 🏔️The incas were impressive civil engineers. The buildings in Machu Picchu are built in a specific way to help them withstand earthquakes. When an earthquake happens (Machu Picchu was constructed on top of two fault lines), the building stones ‘dance’ and ‘bounce’, and then slot back in to place. 🏔️I didn’t realise how recently Machu Picchu was inhabited. A trip up through the various villages in the Andean Highlands such as Otavalo, Cotacachi, Cayambe and Peguche. We visited an indigenous markets, tasted local foods, saw volcanos, hiked up to a waterfall and took a boat ride around a crater that was filled with water and no fish. Along the way we passed what seems like hundreds of greenhouses that were growing roses. Our guide said you could get 100 roses for $3.00! I thought it was $5.00. And I took the best photo ever off the side of the road that was a roasted pig and a lady with the biggest smile you ever saw!! El Gain 🥾 9.94 Mi | 16 Km 🗓️ April 3, 2024 Day 5 of 9 🅷🅸🅺🅴: 17 of 2024 Sooo, we were evacuated off the Salkantay Trail due to impassable landslides at the time of our visit. I could have chosen to throw a fit & dwell in the “why” or “but if”; or be happy for my accomplishments, struggles along the way, and grateful for our team for keeping us safe. I chose the latter. I’m thankful our safety was taken into consideration & we were given awesome options to continue our exploration of Peru. As a team we chose to hike the Ausangate - 7 Lagunas trek. Wilo would pick us up at … yeap… still 4am… off we would go feeling a little more refreshed after a long well deserved hot shower. Ausangate is one of the 5 highest mountains in Peru. I found myself staring in awe, the giant snow capped mountain in front of me radiated nothing but peace & calmness within me. I was standing in front of perhaps one of the most beautiful mountains in the Andes. I also felt redeemed! My lungs finally adjusted to higher elevation and I could once again hike at my pace & be able to breathe. Upon our arrival, we were fed breakfast by a local woman who opened her house up to us for a traditional style homemade breakfast. Afterwards we would take off on our hike and experience the magic of the Ausangate- 7 Lagunas. It the least to say I was truly living in a dream. Alpacas, herds of them! Were just grazing alongside the hills and mtns. Some even posing to have their photo taken. They were so fluffy!!!! I wanted to bring them all home. I hiked to all 7 lakes by foot. I opted out of riding a horse since I didn’t want a repeat of flying off a horse again. Plus at this elevation we would take our time hiking the lakes. I don’t know what the jungle would have shown us (the next section of the Salkantay)… but I was as happy as a little kid with a new toy out here. The mountains were majestic in every way - it’s my happy place.

Las montañas pueden enseñarnos mucho para la vida, pero solo cuando nos sacudimos de encima el ego y la arrogancia. It was frustrating that my muscles were working, I wasn’t tired… it was just hard to breathe! Specially hiking at a faster pace than I’m used to. I had not trained at elevation for this trip and my lungs would feel it. All I had left was to hold on to my will power and willingness to push through. Praying each step of the way that my body would remember how to hike at this altitude. After arriving at Sky Camp we would have a delicious lunch prepared by Juan Carlos, our chef, and then we would head out to Humantay Lake. It was suppose to be an easy peasy hike (2 miles with 1213 Ft. of elevation gain). We would take it slow at the elevation we were at. I had dreamed about Humantay’s turquoise water, picturesque glacial mountain peak as a backdrop, and standing there with my girls for our group photo. Instead I found myself trying to catch up to a group that was fast evading my ability to catch up. We had a turn around time and despite my efforts to reach Humantay Lake… I did not make it to the dreamy lake. I had 15 minutes to reach the lake with half a mile to go. My muscles said yes… push through but it was an internal fight with myself and breathing at a pace I was not used to. This evening was not a win for me and I had to be okay with it. I swiftly shifted my mindset as I stood there admiring the glacier in front of me. I watched the fog of the evening cover and uncover Humantay Glacier. I was truly blessed to be standing there looking at the miracles of Pachamama. I turned around and headed back to our beautiful campground. It was time to reset, heal both body and mind for the next day. Tomorrow would be a new start and a new day.

One foot in front of the other. That’s what I kept telling myself as I take my first few steps on the Salkantay Trail. After two days of exploring the city our group would be picked up from our hotels at 3:50am & 4am. We would all meet our Salkantay Trekking Team (our family for the next 5 days). Wilo: our Guide Juan Carlos: our Chef Assistant Chef & our Horseman And 6 wonderful trekkers (Mio, Leslie, Sam, Georgia, Kieran, and Hanna). Boots laced up, overpacked pack on, hiking poles in hand. I was already out of breath 10 steps in! Already struggling to keep up. What was I thinking! I wanted to hike faster but my lungs said no! I saw the group take off at the speed of light and I was going as fast as a turtle walking through peanut butter. How am I suppose to keep up if my lungs haven’t adjusted to the thin air?!? Then, somehow, my body remembered what I had done two years before on Mt. Kilimanjaro. I was at the end of the group but keeping up as best I could. Wilo being very patient and graceful. After a grueling 6+ miles, praying for my body to cooperate, we finally arrive at Sky Camp. It was everything I imagined! I felt defeated yet hopeful for the next few days. I laid in bed watching the sky above, thankful for the struggle, the beauty before me, and the people I was with.

Day 4 of #salkantaytrek for me began with very little sleep, and cough + fever, but ibuprofen to the rescue! Popped 2 more and off we go! We began our final hike, from Hidroeletrica to Aguas Calientes. Almost all of it was along the train tracks and next to Urubamba river. We stopped at a small shop run by a local villager and had what can only be described as empanadas from heaven, followed by fresh mangos and a hot coffee! That kept us going till the end! On the way, saw the destruction of nature where an entire patch of train tracks vanished overnight a few weeks ago in a flood. We finally made it to Aguas Calientes after about 5+ hours of hike, where we were back in the comfort of urban luxuries, including a hot shower and hotel room bed :) . We made it! We were right there, in the lap of Machu Pichhu, tired, exhausted, but happy. A feather in the cap! 🎉Salkantay trek done and dusted! Day 3 of #salkantaytrek began knowing the toughest part was behind us! Our awesome guide, Carlos, gave us time in the morning to enjoy the sky domes and the views, along with delicious breakfast. We started hiking at around 7am, with a nice, leisurely hike eventually ending at our jungle domes in Lucmabamba. We were we at much lower altitude and our lungs were thanking us :) On the way, we stopped at a coffee plantation to experience the full bean to cup experience - from, roasting to grinding to brewing. Best coffee of the trip! Day ended with a nice, long dip in the hot springs, which should have been relaxing but my body had other plans! Day 2 of #salkantaytrek started early… 4:30 a.m.! After a night in the cold Sky Dome, we were mostly rested. We were slow the day before, so we started earlier than usual. This was the longest and most taxing hike of the trip. We began with 4.5 miles (~7 kms) of hike from Soraypampa to Salkantay pass. Easy, right? Wrong! We gained 700+ meters in altitude! Every step squeezed our lungs; every breath tried to fill it back. It took me 5 hours to reach the pass but what a relief and a sense of achievement it was! We prayed to the gods and started the 10-mile long, downward descent through gravel, to first reach Wayracmachay for lunch and then to the day 2 campsite at Collapampa though pitch dark with our headlights on.
