Les 10 derniers kilomètres, le long de la voie ferrée entre Aguas Calientes et Machu Picchu sont clairement les plus plates à faire. Comme un goût de bonheur et de fierté (et de fatigue!) d'avoir parcouru 70km pour arriver jusque là 💪 Le lendemain on sait qu'une dernière ascension nous attend... Fun trip to #Peru. Spent a couple of days in and around #Cusco doing touristy stuff, and then the 5 day #SalkantayTrek to see #MachuPicchu. Many highlights of the trip - - Day 2 of the trek where we started hiking from #Soraypampa (12795 ft), went up to #SalkantayPass (15190 ft) and then dropped to #Collpapampa (9678 ft), for a total of 14.9 miles, gain of 2395 ft, drop of 5512 ft, all in a single day! Hiking at that altitude is classic type-2 “fun”! - the awesome group that we hiked with! We started calling ourselves Cincos Continentes :-) - sleeping in domes with picturesque views, sometimes right from inside the dome! - the awesome food served by the traveling chefs of @salkantaytrekking . They would clean up after we ate, hike to the next stop before us, and ensure food was ready before we got there! Too good! - making and drinking delicious Pisco Sours at the conclusion of the hiking. - plucking and eating fresh passion fruit from the trees on the trail! - zip lining (700m to 1km segments) between mountains over a small forest/stream - the “vatavaran” in Cusco (IYKYK) :-) - seeing the ruins of Machu Picchu - seeing the various terraces in #SacredValley - the overdose of #cocatea and #munatea to help with altitude sickness and digestion! Some lowlights (for me) - - getting motion sickness at the start of Day 1 as we made our way from Cusco to Mollepatra in a small bus. - struggling to hike up to #HumantayLake on Day 1. The heat and the altitude gave me a severe headache, but slowly I made it to the beautiful lake! - our planned hike at RainbowMountain getting cancelled due to snow. Waste of a 6 hr bus ride!

Tag 2 auf unserem Trek brach an und es sollte der anstrengendste auf dieser Reise werden. Den mit 4.630 Höhenmetern, erreichten wir nicht nur den höchsten Punkt der Tour, sondern hatten auch den größten Aufstieg am Tag zu bewältigen. Auf der Suche nach dem Tumi, ging unserer Pfad über Stock, Stein und Flussläufe. Hoch oben am Salkantay Pass angekommen, verschnauften wir kurz und lauschten dem Gesang der Berge. Ein leises Flötenspiel im Wind, verriet uns, das wir uns auf dem richtigen Pfad zum Tumi befinden. Und so ging unserer Weg weiter... #salkantaytrek #salkantaypass #chawllay #wandern

C'est parti pour le salkantay trek ! 5 jours de marche pour rejoindre le Machu Picchu, avec un pic à 4600 mètre d'altitude. Au moment où je publie cette photo, ça fais 1h00 que j'ai finis ce treck ! Le premier de ma vie pour moi. C'était physique, mais tout autant magnifique. Le treck passe des hautes montagnes à la jungle, les paysages changent chaque jours, c'est une belle expérience qui finis en apothéose avec le fameux Machu Picchu. Je suis contente d'être venu à bout de ce challenge, les 10 derniers km ont étaient pour moi une réelle torture, mais j'ai finis ! Having never done a multi-day hike, the 75km Salkantay trek was an exciting and somewhat daunting challenge… the four day trek along sections of the ancient Inca Trail reaches an altitude of 4600m at the Salkantay Mountain pass before descending to cloud forests and high Peruvian jungle and passes through coffee, passion fruit and avocado plantations before finally arriving to Machu Picchu. #ThrowbackThursday to that one time I got to trek through the Andes Mountains with strangers from around the world! Thankful for this experience, the world truly is full of unbelievable places. Thank you @willmapi 🫶🏼 1. Our very first “break” on the trek. We had finally reached the top of the mountain and introduced ourselves & took pictures before we officially started the Salkantay Trek. 2. Arriving to our first campsite at Soraypampa. I was really excited to take off my overpacked backpack… 3. Humantay Lake- 13,780ft above sea level. 4. Abra Salkantay- 15,190ft above sea level. 5. A glacier lake we passed right after Abra Salkantay, it really was this blue! 6. Finally, Machu Picchu. We had the option to take the stairs all the way up, but by the time we reached Aguas Calientes, I had about 12 blisters on my feet so we took the bus up the mountain. Tilt the phone and you’ll the face in the mountain. 7. The Perurail- we took this train back to Cusco. I knocked out after having a little too many Pisco Sours. Not sure if I dreamt of Saqra dancers or not…lol 8. Rainbow Mountain- 17,060 feet above sea level. 9. The beautiful city view of Cusco from the restaurant, Maizito Cuyería. This was our last day and the day I tried the famous Peruvian dish, Cuy..also know as Guinea Pig. Os Incas tinham uma relação extremamente forte com as montanhas (Apus em Quéchua), eram como os deuses e acreditavam que forneciam sorte e proteção às pessoas, as deixando mais perto do céus. Qualquer desejo que tenha, peça com vontade e do fundo de seu coração, se volte a Apus, as mais altas montanhas e faça seu pedido, os deuses irão te ouvir. O mundo era dividido em três planos: o mundo acima ou os deuses (Hanan Pacha), o mundo terreno ou vivo (Kay Pacha) e o mundo abaixo ou os mortos (Uku Pacha). Na língua dos incas, não dizemos “Adeus”, dizemos “até que nos encontremos novamente”, para eles a vida é um ciclo de morte e renascimento, logo o reencontro em outras vidas é uma certeza, LINDO, não é mesmo? Salkantay Trek - Peru 🇵🇪 Day Four! Last day trekking! 6am wake up - standard whore bath to get the day started! Oh and woke up with a swollen eye so you know it was gonna be a good day 🥲 It was about a 400m trek down which took us around 2.5 hours and it was sooooo muddy! Lucky we had hiking poles or I know I would have 100% fallen! We had a doggo follow us from camp because he was looking for his friend 🥹 He was scared of bridges so our guide carried him across - we eventually had to part ways as he couldn’t come all the way into town with us (apparently he would be killed and potentially eaten 😳) so the last bridge we said our goodbyes and he followed another group going the other way! #salkantaytrek #alpacaexpeditions #incatrek #incatrail #kenandcraigtravels #backpacking #peru #trekking #southamerica #travellife

Hello friends, family, and Rocky Mountain Sportswomen followers! Elena here, founder of RMSW! I just wanted to jump on here since it’s been a very long time since I’ve posted anything. Rocky Mountain Sportswomen is not dead, but just on a break. Some of you may know that a little over a year ago, my father passed away. The last year has been spent grieving and making more time for my family. However, I am still making time doing the things I love including fishing and hunting and anything involving the mountains. I have just prioritized living in those moments, rather than sharing on social media. Over the last several months (close to a year to be honest), instead of planning RMSW outings and events, I have been busy planning a special memorial for my father in North Carolina, and an epic trip to Peru with my sister, Elise, in his honor, which is where I am currently. My father was a geologist, explorer, world traveler, and a very passionate educator and environmentalist. I credit him for instilling my sense of adventure. After his teaching retirement, he led many trips to Machu Picchu through @smithsonianjourneys and Elise and I decided to make Peru the first of many trips to take together to honor his memory and spread some of his ashes. We just completed a 5 day trek on the Salkantay Trail with @salkantaytrekking and spread some of his ashes at 15,000 feet on Salkantay pass, and again at Machu Picchu. Auf der Suche nach dem verlorenen goldenen Tumi, mit seinen giftgrünen Jadeaugen, schlugen wir den Salkantay Trek ein. Eine 5 Tages Wandertour stand uns bevor 🥾 Der Stop unseres ersten Tages war „Laguna Humantay“. Auch wenn die Lagune schön anzusehen ist und ein toller Ort um Fotos zu machen, gab es leider keine Spur vom Tumi. Da eine Abkühlung in der Lagune nicht mehr erlaubt ist, zogen wir weiter zu unserem ersten Camp „Salkantay Pampa“ 🏕 Die Unterkünfte boten uns etwas Schutz, vor den eisigen 1 Grad die uns Nachts erwarteten. Abgeschieden von der Zivilisation, lag unser weiterer Weg in den Sternen 🌠 und so konnten wir bei klarer Sicht, die Sterne und die Milchstraße bestaunen. 🌌 Wir fanden einen Weg, unsere schwere Expeditionsausrüstung, einfacher zu transportieren. Caiophora chuquitensis of Laosaceae with a backdrop of Humantay Lake. I thought the family name may come from Laos, but actually the members are Neotropical. This was our first stopping point on the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. Our guide, Zucemo, was from around here and his parents still live close by. His family is indigenous to these parts and he shared many stories (primarily folktales) with us as we sat by the lake. Salkantay Trek - Peru 🇵🇪 Day Three! After another break taking in Machu Picchu in the distance we trekked down another 1-2 hours to our campsite! And what a campsite - looking out our tent again we could see Machu Picchu!!! It was very clear arriving and amazing to whore bath to looking out! Salkantay Trek - Peru 🇵🇪 Day Three! After lunch we trekked up about 600m and it was tough and hot and then finally we came across an amazing break spot!!! Straight to the little shop to buy some chocolate to get us through the next part of the day! There was a swing to relax on our break and take our mind off all the pain and dreaded doom of going up again! Another 45mins walking and we made it to the top! And our first viewing of Machu Picchu in the distance! We started the official Inca trek part today - this is where it got tough with lots of steps and up up up We had lunch at a local families house where we were shown how they roast coffee beans and had some tastings (some liqueur ones too yew) And awwww look at the cute little Guniea pigs …. Salkantay Trek - Night/Morning 1: Just wanted to start by saying this trek was practically indescribable…our group, the guides, the food, the scenery - all incredible! If you’re looking for a once in a lifetime experience, this is it. Ps. Salkantay in Quechuan (the language spoken in the mountains) means savage mountain. The mountain gets its name from the few unsuccessful/fatal attempts people have made at summiting it. For our first night, we took a 3hr bus trip from Cusco city to the small town of Soraypampa. There we spent the night in glass cabanas - small huts with glass roofs overlooking the stunning Umantay mountain. We had our wake up call at 5am and then began our trek with Umantay Lake as our first stop - a lagoon at the base of Umantay mountain. Passed by some llamas on the way up to the lake. Llama, alpaca, guanaco or vicuña?? Llamas are descendants of guanacos that were domesticated 6,000 to 7,000 years ago. People in the Andes raise them for wool, meat, and skin and also use them as pack animals. The result is the llama of today, which is the domesticated version of the guanaco. Llamas are significantly taller than alpacas and their own wild descendants, vicuñas. Tour Laguna Humantay 💙😍 Una verdadera excursión de montaña, el recorrido comienza saliendo de su hotel entre las 4:00 a 4:30 am. Viajamos al tranquilo pueblo de Mollepata ubicado al noroeste de Cusco, donde pararemos para desayunar y luego continuaremos hacia el Valle de Soraypampa. Después de un breve descanso, comenzamos la caminata de 7 km. (ida y vuelta) hacia la famosa laguna, disfrutando de grandes vistas del majestuoso Nevado Humantay (4.200 m.s.n.m.) en el camino. Llegamos a la encantadora Laguna Humantay en una hora y media a dos horas, dependiendo del ritmo de la caminata. A orillas de la laguna, la tranquilidad de sus aguas y las impresionantes vistas de los nevados se prestan para una experiencia extraordinaria. También veremos el conocido Nevado Salkantay en el fondo del valle, tanto a la ida como a la vuelta. Finalmente, regresaremos a Mollepata para almorzar, descansar un poco y tomar muchas fotos antes de regresar a Cusco, al final de un hermoso día de caminata en los Andes. Salkantay Trek - Peru 🇵🇪 Day Two! After lunch (another feast) we had 10kms to go… flattish - it was hard, well for me with my bung knee after 10kms down! First we had to cross a landslide that was very muddy… so of course I missed the stepping rocks our guide and porters had laid out for us 🤦♀️ Some more incredible scenery and I truly felt like Frodo trekking to Gondor by the end - I just didn’t have a ring making me weak just my knee that I had to essentially hobble the last 3-4kms And Craig was not being a great Samwise Gamgee and wouldn’t carry me! But we made it….. TO OUR HOBBIT HOUSES!!! There was a “jacuzzi” which we had to wait to fill with hot water that turned lukewarm very quick haha but it was still good for the bones! And they had showers! Let’s say we slept like absolute hobbits that night! I don’t even think orcs could wake us!
