Astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert boarded the Saturn V rocket on April 11, 1970. They were the crew for the Apollo 13 mission to the moon.⠀ .⠀ Lovell served as the commander of Apollo 13, Haise the lunar lander pilot and Swigert, a last-minute replacement for another astronaut who had been exposed to German measles, the command module pilot. Lovell and Haise would have been the fifth and sixth men to walk on the moon. But on April 13, disaster struck.⠀ .⠀ The astronauts had almost reached the moon when they heard a bang and felt a shudder. One of two oxygen tanks in the service module had ruptured. ⠀ .⠀ Within seconds, Houston's Mission Control saw pressure readings for oxygen tank B plunge to zero. Meeting Todd Douglas Miller in Amsterdam was one of the highlights from 2019 for me. Such a sympathetic man, after screening Apollo 11 with him present in the audience, he took the time to answer all kind of questions from audience members, many of which were probably asked him many times before. In my opinion he made the best documentary about the Apollo 11 mission ever. So I’m glad to have his movie now on 4K UHD Blu Ray! It wasn’t available in my country so I had it imported from the UK. . The recently discovered 70mm footage looks so sharp and pristine, it literally feels like watching something that was filmed yesterday. The second best thing next to stepping through a time machine. And the movie is also intersected with some visual schematics explaining each process of the mission which are very informative for newcomers and very well done indeed. . It’s also one of those documentaries you can’t stop watching. The atmosphere is so enveloping and gripping! Don’t go just taking a peek for a scene or two because before you know it you’ve watched the whole movie... ...again! At the moment the spacecraft landed, Apollo 11 commander Armstrong said: "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed." Charlie Duke, the capsule communicator, responded from mission control in Houston: "Roger, Tranquility. We copy you on the ground. You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We're breathing again." From Apollo 7-14, the astronauts wore this spacesuit – the A7L. The NASA EMU consists of 2 parts: The Pressure Suit Assembly (PSA) and the Portable Life Support System (PLSS). The PLSS is commonly referred to as the “backpack” while the PSA is the actual suit component. This photo of the moon was taken during the Apollo 9 mission lasting from March 3 to March 13, 1969. This mission was used to test the functionality of the Command and Service Module before the planned Lunar Landing in just a few months’ time. Upon further examination, one can see multiple giant cylindrical objects across the moon when the photo is zoomed in.
