Apollo 11 (Todd Douglas Miller, 2019) Undoubtedly one of the biggest events in documentary cinema of the past decade. Todd Douglas Miller’s gargantuan depiction of the Apollo 11 mission, made solely from unseen archival footage from the NASA archives, feels like the future of the documentary genre alongside Sergei Loznitsa’s equally rich works. The total absence of taking heads and the intricate construction of the film itself, lends the footage a blockbuster quality that any big-budget narrative film could never match. And whilst I personally prefer the dreamy abstractions of a film like For All Mankind, I won’t deny the sheer visceral power this has in depicting one of humanity’s greatest achievements. Durante décadas, trechos dos bastidores permaneceram guardados e apenas recentemente foram liberados para visualização do público no geral. ⠀ "Apollo 11" traz nova vida à missão espacial mais famosa de todos os tempos, realizada entre 16 e 24 de julho de 1969, ao contar a história dos primeiros passos do homem na Lua e conter imagens surpreendentes que permaneceram ocultas por quase cinco décadas. O documentário combina imagens conhecidas com tesouros perdidos durante muito tempo, encontrados em um depósito dos Arquivos Nacionais e digitalizados pela primeira vez. Cinquenta por cento do filme são imagens que nunca tinham sido vistas antes, mas o certo é que, em termos de qualidade, 100% nunca tinha sido visto até agora, pois todo o material foi escaneado. As imagens são fascinantes: a cores, o gigantesco ônibus da Nasa usado para carregar o enorme foguete Saturn V que lançou a tripulação ao espaço enche toda a tela no cinema. As tomadas foram algumas das muitas que se encontraram em 177 rolos de 65 mm descobertos por Dan Rooney, supervisor da seção de filmes dos Arquivos Nacionais. Foram encontrados mal etiquetados, sem nenhuma indicação de seu conteúdo, com exceção de um genérico "Apollo 11", em uma instalação de armazenamento refrigerado nos subúrbios de Maryland. Então, foi necessária muita pesquisa para entender o que realmente havia ali para ajudar o diretor a levar as imagens às telonas. As I finish up my 2019 list, I have two 2019 documentaries that were highly acclaimed and received many awards including Oscar noms. I implore everyone to watch both of these films. They are radically different documentaries, but they are equally stunning in their presentations and impact. Both will make my 2019 list, and they are both currently on Hulu. 1) Apollo 11 // Thrilling. Riveting. Breathtaking. Fascinating. Even though every living person probably has some general knowledge of what is being shown in this documentary, the filmmakers present Apollo 11 with such loving thoroughness and detailed beauty, with a soaring original score making this a must-watch film. Not just for film fans, but for all of mankind. Haven’t seen this yet? Start a free trial on Hulu and watch it. I greatly regret not making time to see this magnificent documentary on the big screen. I imagine it would’ve been even better in a theater on a massive screen. Meeting Todd Douglas Miller in Amsterdam was one of the highlights from 2019 for me. Such a sympathetic man, after screening Apollo 11 with him present in the audience, he took the time to answer all kind of questions from audience members, many of which were probably asked him many times before. In my opinion he made the best documentary about the Apollo 11 mission ever. So I’m glad to have his movie now on 4K UHD Blu Ray! It wasn’t available in my country so I had it imported from the UK. . The recently discovered 70mm footage looks so sharp and pristine, it literally feels like watching something that was filmed yesterday. The second best thing next to stepping through a time machine. And the movie is also intersected with some visual schematics explaining each process of the mission which are very informative for newcomers and very well done indeed. . It’s also one of those documentaries you can’t stop watching. The atmosphere is so enveloping and gripping! Don’t go just taking a peek for a scene or two because before you know it you’ve watched the whole movie... ...again! 🎥 #MovieReview: last night I finally watched something I've desperately wanted to see for quite a while - #Apollo11! Format: #Bluray 💿 Synopsis: A look at the Apollo 11 mission to land on the #moon led by commander Neil Armstrong and pilots Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. Film: 10/10. A project worthy of the subject matter, and told in a manner that allows the footage and words of those involved speak for themselves. The entire film moves at a brisk pace. The preparations for the mission are less of a focus, with us moving to the launch quite quickly. A significant portion of the time involves the moon landing itself. Even for long time space buffs like me, there's a wealth of content to revel in. Most of the photography is breathtaking, and offers glimpses of the mission I'd never seen before. The hand-held shots and snippets of audio really ground the project, delivering authenticity a reproduction simply couldn't deliver. There's only one way to describe this: perfection. My only complaint: it could have been twice as long. We may have had the opportunity to see some of the aforementioned preparations in greater detail. Some shots are poor, but that's due to the available technology of the time. It's criminal that a 4K release with a great HDR grade has not been made available. Audio: 10/10. Rounding out a perfect presentation is a flawless 5.1 mix. Obviously some dialogue is less than ideal, but given the sources it's understandable. The score, using instruments available in the 60's, sounds wonderful. The highlight is the incredible dynamics and bass of the rocket lift off. #MoofieMeter: 10/10.
