Backdraft 1991 Quality - Great Nostalgia - 5 This is an interesting one. First of all the movie is fantastic, the practical special effects are an all time masterpiece, the script is a little silly at its core, but the cast and direction make up for it. I actually have more nostalgia for the "ride" at Universal Studios than the movie and didn't see the movie all the way through until I was much older but really appreciate it now. It’s horror movie haul Monday 🙌. Most of these movies were actually decent but just had terrible endings, i liked that Children of the Corn 3 brought the story out of the small town to the big city to make it feel different when it’s much of the same, the death scenes were spectacular for what i’ve seen of the franchise so far, but such a silly ending. Night in the Woods is a found footage movie very similar to The Blair Witch Project but with no real story, i think they tried to add a supernatural element but nothing really gets explained. The Ghost is a Korean movie having a go at the Japanese ghost girl revenge thing, not bad but the ending sucked. Dark Signal would have been better if it just cut out the supernatural elements and simplified the characters etc, a decent story poorly executed. Halloween Haunting is also called Hayride, probably would have enjoyed it a bit more if it had its original title and cover, its terrible but entertainingly terrible. I saw 'City Of God' for a quid. I adore this film, and bought it on DVD with my movie wall in mind once again. The cost of living is hitting me hard like most others, so whilst I wouldn't normally purchase a DVD version - I couldn't ignore an all-time favourite of mine for a pound. This was one of my first ventures into world cinema way back in 2002, and it certainly deserves a spot on my own ode to cinematic greatness. . Pale Rider plays out much like Kurosawa's Seven Samurai whereby Clint Eastwood's Preacher turns up and becomes the saviour of a gold mining community. A community who are hounded and beaten by the town's wealthy businessman Lahood (Richard Dysart), who keeps sending out his henchmen to try and intimidate the humble prospectors from their land. It's all set up perfectly in the first twenty minutes but then the middle portion of the film drags severely as the writers focus on the unnecessary infatuations of a 14 year old girl who falls head over heels in love with the Preacher. It really isn't needed and the film would have been a much tighter experience without it because the final third gets back on track with a suspenseful showdown between the Preacher and Lahood's hired gunmen. Eastwood is excellent as the invincible Preacher who dishes out retribution in spades and we are treated to some familiar faces from John Carpenter's The Thing too. I really loved the filming locations Pale Rider is set. With the rugged terrain, snow capped mountains and pine woodland it was visually a treat. Although the cinematography in some of the darker scenes was questionable, it was so dark that it was actually hard to pick out what or who was being filmed at times.
